SULPHURIZED CALCIUM ALKYLPHENOLATE COMPOSITION

1523444 Overbased materials; lubricants TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 28 July 1975 [26 Aug 1974] 31431/75 Headings C4X and C5F [Also in Division C2] A sulphurized calcium alkylphenate has a metal ratio of 1 to 1.2, a calcium content of 1 to 8 wt. per cent and a sulphur content of 0À5 to 12 wt. per cent and is made by (1) contacting an alkylphenol R.C 6 H 4 .OH or R 2 .C 6 H 3 .OH where R is a saturated aliphatic radical of 5 to 50 carbon atoms with a first addition of calcium alkoxyalkoxide of the formula Ca (O-A-OR<SP>1</SP>) 2 where A is alklyene of I to 6 carbon atoms and R' is alkyl of 1 to 25 carbon atoms at a temperature of 200-420‹ F. in a mole ratio of calcium alkoxyalkoxide to alkylphenol of 0.225:1 to 0.45:1, (2) contacting this reaction product with sulphur in the presence of hydrocarbon lubricating oil at a temperature of 440‹ to 460‹ F. at a mol. ratio of sulphur to alkylphenol of 0À5:1 to 8:1, the hydrocarbon oil amounting to 13 to 20 wt. per cent of the reaction mixture, and (3) contacting this product with a second addition of calcium alkoxyalkoxide at the same temperature as in step (1) at a mol. ratio of Ca alkoxyalkoxide to alkylphenol of 0:15:1 to 0À375:1 so that the ratio of total Ca alkoxyalkoxide to alkylphenol is 0À5:1 to 0.6:1. Preferably the reaction mixture is blown with an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, during steps (1) and (3) and successively with inert gas, carbon dioxide and inert gas during step (2). Products containing 10 to 90 wt. per cent of sulphurized calcium alkylphenate are useful as concentrates for preparing lubricating oils which may contain 0À1 to 7.5 wt. per cent of sulphurized calcium alkylphenate. The lubricating oils and concentrates may also contain known additives, examples of which are disclosed.
