A composition comprising:(a) a medium comprising a solvent, a functional fluid, an additive concentrate or combinations thereof; and(b) a friction modifier component comprising a derivative of a hydroxy-carboxylic acid that is not fully soluble in the medium; and(c) a stabilizing component that is soluble in (a) and that interacts with (b) such that (b)'s solubility in (a) is improved;wherein components (b) and (c), or (b) alone, are present in component (a) in the form of dispersed particles having an average diameter of less than 10 microns; andwherein the stabilizing component comprises a compound having at least one hydrogen-donating group, a least one hydrogen-accepting group, and at least one hydrocarbyl group, where the hydrogen-donating group and the hydrogen-accepting group are not separated by more than 8 bonds, wherein said bonds include covalent and ionic bonds.4. The present invention provides a multipurpose overbased metal salt of the reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted amine with an itaconate, such as an N-substituted 4-carboxypyrrolidin-2-one, and methods of employing the same in lubricating compositions. Overbasing the N-substituted 4-carboxypyrrolidin-2-one can provide improved friction modifying performance to the compound as well as impart multi-functionality to the compound, i.e., the compound may function as a friction modifier as well as, for example, a detergent, anti-wear or extreme pressure agent and dispersant in lubricating compositions. The lubricating compositions containing the overbased N-substituted 4-carboxypyrrolidin-2-one are preferably intended to be employed in a method for lubricating a mechanical device, such as an automatic or manual transmission. Provided is a lubricating oil for electric and hybrid vehicles. GER fluids are improved by the addition of a polar molecule additive. By addition of a polar molecule additive, yield stresses under electric field are improved by over 50% while the current density is reduced to less than a quarter of the original GER. The reversible response time still remains the same, and the sedimentation stability is greatly enhanced. The zero field viscosity of the modified GER fluid remains the same as that of the original GER fluid without the additive. The improved GER characteristics improve general functionality as an electrical-mechanical interface, attendant with applications to car clutches, fluid brakes, and vehicle shock absorbers.
