The present invention relates to light color, shelf-stable liquid compositions of overbased calcium carboxylate soaps and a process for their preparation. The inventive soaps are prepared by neutralizing calcium base in a mixture of two different aliphatic carboxylic acids and carbonating the mixture in the presence of a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent and a polar organic solvent as a promoter under controlled temperature conditions. The overbased calcium carboxylate soaps of the invention contain 20%-90% by weight of C 7 to C 25 saturated carboxylic acids, which are branched on carbon 2, and between 1% and 20% by weight short chain saturated carboxylic acids. These liquid compositions have light colors and excellent heat stability. They can be used as anticorrosion/antirust additives, and paint dryers and stabilizers, in paints, coatings and lubricants, as well as other applications.

Process for preparing overbased phenates

Номер: EP0601721A2
Автор: Yuehsiung Chang
Принадлежит: Afton Chemical Corp

Overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal alkylphenate having excellent water tolerance properties in lubricant formulations is prepared by charging into a reactor a preheated (280-380°F) mixture of alkaline earth metal base and alkylphenol (preferably in oil), while simultaneously, but separately, charging a promoter solvent such as a glycol. Then a controlled amount of molten sulfur is charged at a rate that controls the reaction exotherm and off-gas evolution, while maintaining the 280-380°F temperature. Upon completing the sulfur charge, the reactor contents are allowed to interact at 280-380°F long enough to form the sulfurized alkylphenate. While keeping the temperature at 280-380°F, the sulfurized alkylphenate is overbased by charging the reactor simultaneously with controlled amounts of alkaline earth metal base, promoter solvent, and carbon dioxide gas, at a controlled charge rate not much greater or less than the rate at which the reactants undergo reaction to form the overbased phenate. Upon completing the charging of the alkaline earth metal base and promoter solvent, the carbon dioxide charge is continued until completion of the carbonation reaction. Unreacted alkylphenol and promoter solvent are stripped off under vacuum with inert gas purge at 400-480°F, and the resultant reaction product is filtered and the filtered product recovered. The reaction cycle time is no more than about 6 hours, and the filtered product has water tolerance properties normally associated with a batch preparation of the same product requiring a reaction cycle time of at least 8 hours.

PROCESSES FOR PREPARING BASIC MAGNESIUM SALTS OF OIL SOLUBLE ORGANIC ACIDS BY CONTACTING AN INORGANIC ACIDIC MATERIAL WITH A MIXTURE OF THE ACIDS, OR THEIR ALKALI OR ALKALINE EARTH METAL SALTS, MAGNESIUM OXIDE, AND WATER OR ALCOHOL-WATER PROMOTER SYSTEM. CARBON DIOXIDE IS AN EXEMPLARY ACIDIC MATERIAL. LOWER ALKANOLS PARTICULARLY METHANOL, ARE USEFUL CO-PROMOTERS FOR USE WITH THE WATER. MIXTURES OF OIL-SOLUBLE SULFONIC ACIDS AND OIL-SOLUBLE CARBOXYLIC ACIDS, OR THEIR ALKALI OR ALKALINE EARTH METAL SALTS, ARE USEFUL STARTING MATERIALS FOR PREPARING BASIC MAGNESIUM SALTS. WITH ALCOHOL-WATER CO-PROMOTERS, THE INORGANIC ACIDIC MATERIAL IS CONTACTED WITH THE REACTION MIXTURE IN TWO STAGES, FIRST IN THE PRESENCE OF BOTH PROMOTERS AND THEN IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER ONLY. THE PRODUCTS ARE USEFUL AS ADDITIVES IN LUBRICANTS AND FUELS AND AS INTERMEDIATES IN PREPARING OTHER USEFUL PRODUCTS.

Process for preparing highly-basic, magnesium-containing dispersion

Номер: US3865737A
Автор: Paul Clifford Kemp
Принадлежит: Continental Oil Co

A process for preparing a fluid, highly-basic, magnesiumcontaining dispersion, wherein the process comprises: forming an admixture of oil soluble dispersing agent, magnesium oxide, volatile solvent, water, alcohol, and ammonia or ammonium compound, treating the admixture with carbon dioxide, adding to the carbonated admixture a nonvolatile diluent oil, and removing the volatile materials. The process is particularly suitable for preparing large batches of product and, therefore, is suitable for commercial preparation of the product. The product is useful in lubricating compositions for internal combustion engines. Important features of the process are: use of a very small amount of alcohol, use of ammonia or ammonium compound and use of certain types of magnesium oxide.

Over-based magnesium salts of sulphonic acids

Номер: US4129589A
Принадлежит: Surpass Chemicals Ltd

A process for preparing an over-based, oil-soluble magnesium salt of a sulphonic acid comprises contacting an acidic gas in the presence of a promoter system with a mixture of an oil-soluble magnesium salt of a sulphonic acid, a light magnesium oxide and an inert diluent. The promoter system comprises (1) a carboxylic compound selected from the group of compounds consisting of lower carboxylic acids, lower carboxylic anhydrides, substituted lower carboxylic acids, and metal salts and esters of lower carboxylic acids, (2) water, and optionally (3) a lower alkanol or lower alkoxy alkanol. The reaction is carried out at a temperature ranging from approximately 50° F up to reflux temperature of the mixture. The volatile components are stripped from the reaction mixture after absorption of the acidic gas is at a desired level to give an over-based, oil-soluble magnesium salt of the sulphonic acid.

A method for preparing a carbonate overbased calcium sulfonate, which method comprises the steps of: (1) forming an initial mixture of a lower molecular weight alkanol, an alkyl or alkaryl substituted sulfonic acid or sulfonate compound, a diluent and a solvent; (2) adding a basic calcium compound to the initial mixture to form a second mixture in which the amount of added calcium is at least about ten times the amount necessary to form a neutral calcium sulfonate; (3) heating the second mixture to reflux temperature; (4) carbonating the second mixture at said reflux temperature to form a carbonated product while simultaneously and continuously removing water produced by the carbonation reaction; (5) after carbonation is stopped, heating the carbonated product to an elevated temperature sufficient to remove the alkanol; and (6) removing solids and solvent from the carbonated product.
