In the preparation of diesters of an alcohol and a dicarboxylic acid or a glycol and a monocarboxylic acid, the esterification and subsequent purification are carried out in an inert atmosphere and the diester is stored undere an inert atmosphere. The ester may have the formula R COO R 1OOCR or the formula R OOC R 1COOR, where R is an alkyl radical of 6 to 12 carbon atoms and R1 is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of 4 to 10 carbon atoms. Details are given of their physical properties and preparation from the acid and alcohol with an esterification catalyst such as p-toluenesulphonic acid. The acid may be prepared from xylylene dichloride by conversion into the dicyanide and hydrolysis. The xylylene dichloride may be obtained by (1) chlorinating xylene; (2) chloromethylating benzene in two stages; or (3) chlorinating toluene and chloromethylating the resulting benzyl chloride. An electrical insulation or lubricating composition especially for use at high temperatures consists of a high boiling aryl ester of an inorganic acid and an oxidation inhibitor soluble therein. A method for preparing a liquid polyolefin includes contacting a feedstock comprising at least one olefin monomer with a catalyst system to produce a reactor effluent stream, filtering the reactor effluent stream, washing a created filter cake with a wash fluid comprising at least one hydrocarbon liquid; and recovering the liquid polyolefin. The catalyst system may be any conventional polyolefin catalyst system, and in a preferred embodiment, the catalyst system contains at least one activated metallocene catalyst. The reactor effluent stream comprises at least one liquid polyolefin, residual catalyst, and unreacted olefin monomer.

Premium synthetic lubricants comprise a synthetic isoparaffinic hydrocarbon base stock and an effective amount of at least one, and typically a plurality of lubricant additives such as a detergent, dispersant, antioxidant, antiwear additive, pout point depresant, VI improver and the like. The base stock is derived from a waxy, paraffinic, Fischer-Tropsch synthesized hydrocarbon feed fraction having an initial boiling point in the range of about 650-750° F. and continuously boiling up to at least 1050° F., by a process which comprises hydroisomerizing the feed and dewaxing the isomerate. The waxy feed has a T 90 −T 10 temperature difference of at least 350° F. and is preferably hydroisomerized without any pretreatment, other than optional fractionation. The lubricant may also contain hydrocarbonaceous and synthetic base stock material. Lubricants, such as fully formulated multigrade automotive crankcase and transmission oils formed by adding a suitable additive package to the isoparaffinic base stock have exhibited performance superior to similar fully formulated oils based on both PAO and conventional, petroleum derived base stocks.

The present invention provides a process for producing a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon prepared using an α-olefin as a raw material and represented by the general formula (1), including the steps of: (I) producing a vinylidene olefin by dimerizing the α-olefin in the presence of a metallocene complex catalyst; (II) further dimerizing the vinylidene olefin in the presence of an acid catalyst; and (III) hydrogenating the obtained dimer. Further, there are provided a lubricant composition containing the saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon compound produced by the above process, a bearing oil consisting of the lubricant composition, and making use of the same, a bearing and gyral equipment. The saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds produced by the process of the present invention have low-temperature fluidity, exhibiting low evaporativity, and excellent in thermal stability and oxidation stability. Thus, the saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds are suitable for use as, for example, a base oil of lubricant composition for hydraulic pressure, turbine, working machine, bearing, gear, metal-working, etc.

In addition the use of the said lubricant compounds containing the complex esters as oils for vehicle transmission, axles, industrial drives, compressors, turbines or engines is proposed.

It provides excellent solubility and excellent viscosity control at low and high temperatures.

The saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds produced by the above process have low-temperature fluidity, exhibiting low volatility, and excel in thermal stability and oxidation stability. The invention provides a method of providing antiwear performance to a driveline device, wherein the driveline device includes a manual transmission that may or may not contain a synchronizer system, or an axle, the method comprising supplying to the driveline device a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a product obtained/obtainable by reacting: (i) a hydroxy-containing carboxylic compound, a phosphorylating agent, or reactive equivalents thereof, and optionally an alcohol, wherein the hydroxy-containing carboxylic compound is derived from a partially esterified polyol, or mixtures thereof; and wherein the phosphorylating agent, or reactive equivalents thereof is POC1 3 , P 2 0s, P 4 0i 0 or polyphosphoric acid, and (ii) reacting the product of (i) with a branched secondary or tertiary monoamine, or mixtures thereof; wherein the product is present at 0.01 to 5 wt % or 0.05 wt % to 2 wt %, or 0.1 wt % to 1 wt %, or 0.2 wt % to 0.5 wt % of the lubricating composition.
