Known oxidation and corrosion inhibitors, oliness agents, sludge dispersers, pour point depressants and stabilizing and viscosity improving agents may also be added. Amines mentioned are aniline, diethylene triamine, 3-di-n-amylaminepropylamine, monoethanolamine, phenylethanolamine, aminoethylethanolamine and nitron (1,4-diphenyl-3,5-endoanilino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole).ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of a fluoborate RxHBF4, where R is an amine and x may be 1 or more. The hydrocarbon oil may be of natural or synthetic origin. Fluoborates mentioned are those of diethylene triamine, nitron, aniline, aminoethylethanolamine, 3 - di - n - amylaminopropylamine, monoethanolamine and phenylethanolamine. From 0.5 to 5 per cent of the fluoborate is preferably used. Additives, such as extreme pressure additives composed of chlorine-, sulphur- or lead-containing compounds, may also be added.

The alkylate from (1) may be washed with NaOH and distilled to remove excess aromatic starting material. These greases exhibit smaller friction coefficients than conventional greases used for this purpose. On the homokinetic joint lubricated with the grease according to the present invention, the axial force produced is reduced and vibrations generated on the engine are absorbed. Talc or like solid unctuous substance is applied to ribbons of foil made of or containing cellulose derivatives, and the ribbons are then wrapped on electric conductors such as wires, cables, ribbons, bus-bars, and coils. The solid lubricant does not impart tackiness as is the case with oils, and it enables narrow ribbons of foil to be passed at high speed through the guides of the winding devices, and to be unwound from packages without sticking. Instead of talc, there may be used a metallic salt of a fatty acid such as zinc stearate or palmitate, or aluminium oleate, or bismuth oxychloride, or fuller's earth. The solid lubricant may be applied by rubbing, dusting, or blowing on to the surface of the foil. The quantity deposited is preferably so small that the transparency is not materially affected and subsequent cementing or welding is not interfered with. The invention comprises a hydroxythiobenzamide having the general formula wherein R1 and R2 are C1-C20 alkyl groups or C7-C20 aralkyl groups, R3 and R4 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkaryl groups or R3 and R4 are groups which may be bonded together through an oxygen atom to form with the N atom depicted a morpholine ring. An hydrocarbon oil, in whose molecule a benzene ring is joined to a saturated hydrocarbon group, is employed as the lubricant in the compressor unit of a compression refrigerator apparatus, wherein the refrigerant used is a fluoro-halo aliphatic hydrocarbon such as CFCl3, CF2Cl2 or CHF2Cl. The oil may have a viscosity between 50 and 2,000 seconds Saybolt Universal and may be an alkyl benzene whose alkyl group, whether branched or normal, contains a chain of 4-15 carbon atoms. Suitable hydrocarbons are dodecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl or heptadecyl benzene, 4-hexadecylcumene, diphenyl decane, diphenyl dodecane, diphenyl pentadecane and mixtures thereof. The mixture of dodecyl benzene isomers produced by the alkylation of benzene with propylene tetramer is particularly suitable but distillation cuts from coal-tar fractions are also mentioned. Mineral oil compressor lubricants may be blended with the alkyl benzenes.

An improved disk drive system using a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant is disclosed. In the disk drive system, there is a plurality of critically spaced magnetic disks rotated by a disk motor. A spindle shaft, which is retained by the spindle sleeve, couples to the disk motor and to the plurality of magnetic disks for rotation. The spindle shaft and spindle sleeve uses a bearing, which is lubricated by a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant. The lubricant is used to prevent electrostatic charge build up during operation of the disk drive system. The lubricant may be either a non-polar oil or a ball bearing grease and further comprising either a metal caged fullerenes compound, STADIS-450, ASA-3, or Polyfloe 130. One particular type of lubricant is an emeraldine salt of polyanilin produced according to the steps of first reacting a solution of HCL and ammonium persulfate into a solution of HCL and analine to form a polymer. Next, the polymer is mixed with ammonium hydroxide and then is prepared to have a molecular weight of 1,000-20,000. Finally, the polymer is mixed with dodecyl benzylsulfonc acid or camphor sulfonic acid until the emeraldine salt is formed.

The novel polymers of the present invention are prepared by reacting a heterocyclic nitrogen compound containing at least one --N(H)-- group in the ring, an aldehyde and amino-substituted polymer (e.g., an ethylene alpha-olefin interpolymer substituted by primary amino or secondary amino groups) to form an oil soluble Mannich base derivative useful as antioxidant additive in oleaginous compositions such as lubricating oils and fuels. Preferred heterocyclic nitrogen compound are azoles such as benzotriazoles and alkyl-substituted benzotriazoles. Preferred amino-substituted interpolymers comprise amino-substituted ethylene propylene norbornene terpolymers. The polymers of this invention are oil soluble and are useful as dispersants, viscosity index improver dispersants, and as antiwear and antioxidant additives in oleaginous compositions.

Substantially linear ethylene/alpha-olefin polymers as viscosity index improvers or gelling agents

Substantially linear ethylene polymers, such as ethylene/octene copolymers and ethylene/propylene/diene modified polymers, when added in a viscosity modifying amount to an oleaginous material, such as a lubricating oil, provides the material with a viscosity index that exceeds that of the material alone. The substantially linear ethylene polymers, prepared by constrained geometry catalysis, may be grafted with one or more unsaturated organic compounds, such as maleic anhydride, that contain ethylenic unsaturation. The grafted polymer may be further functionalized by reactions with, for example, an alcohol or an amine compound. The substantially linear ethylene polymers, when subjected to shearing action either before or after addition to an oleaginous material, improve shear stability of the oleaginous material. The substantially li near ethylene polymers, whether grafted, grafted and further reacted or not, also work as a thickening agent for compositions such as those used in greases, cable filling coumpounds and cosmetics. In addition, the substantially linear ethylene polymers provide effective results when blended with other components of conventional oleaginous material compositions.

A friction material member particularly useful in high load and temperature applications and a method for making the same are disclosed. The friction material member is made by preparing a mixture of sinterable metal particles, carbonaceous material, friction enhancers and curable polymeric resin; the mixture comprising at least about 50 percent by weight of metal particles and sufficient resin to coat and bond the metal particles, carbonaceous material and friction enhancers. The mixture is molded and the resin cured to form a piece in a solid preformed shape corresponding to the shape of the mold. Thereafter, the preformed piece is heated in a substantially oxygen free atmosphere for a time and at temperatures and pressures sufficient to fuse at least a portion of the metal particles into a sintered metal matrix. The preformed piece may be sintered to a metal backing plate during the heating step, or may be welded, brazed or soldered to the plate after heating. The resulting product may be classified as a hybrid friction material, i.e., being a cross between semi-metallic and sintered full metallic friction materials.

An improved disk drive system using a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant is disclosed. In the disk drive system, there is a plurality of critically spaced magnetic disks rotated by a disk motor. The spindle shaft and spindle sleeve uses a bearing, which is lubricated by a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant. The lubricant is used to prevent electrostatic charge build up during operation of the disk drive system. The lubricant may be either a non-polar oil or a ball bearing grease and further comprising either a metal caged fullerenes compound, STADIS-450, ASA-3, or Polyfloe 130. One particular type of lubricant is an emeraldine salt of polyanilin produced according to the steps of first reacting a solution of HCL and ammonium persulfate into a solution of HCL and analine to form a polymer. Next, the polymer is mixed with ammonium hydroxide and then is prepared to have a molecular weight of 1,000-20,000. Finally, the polymer is mixed with dodecyl benzylsulfonc acid or camphor sulfonic acid until the emeraldine salt is formed.

Gel-free dispersant additives for lubricating and fuel oil compositions comprise at least one adduct of (A) α-olefin homopolymer or interpolymer of 700 to 10,000 number average molecular weight, free radically grafted with an average of from about 0.5 to about 5 carboxylic acid producing moieties per polymer chain, and (B) at least one non-aromatic nucleophilic post-treating reactant selected from (i) amine compounds containing only a single reactive amino group per molecule, (ii) alcohol compounds containing only a single hydroxy group per molecule, (iii) polyamine compounds containing at least two reactive amino groups per molecule, (iv) polyol compounds containing at least two reactive hydroxy groups per molecule, (v) aminoalcohol compounds containing at least one reactive amino group and at least one reactive hydroxy group per molecule, and (vi) mixtures of (i) to (v); provided that when said post-treating reactant includes one or more of (iii), (iv) or (v), the reaction between (A) and (B) is conducted in the presence of sufficient chain-stopping or end-capping co-reactant (C) to ensure that the grafted and post-reacted product mixture is gel-free.

The modified copolymer is characterized in that (i) the liquid modified ethylenic random copolymer has an ethylene component content of 10 to 85 mole % and an alpha-olefin component content of 15 to 90 mole %, (ii) in the 13 C-NMR spectrum of the liquid modified ethylenic random copolymer, signals of αβ and βγ based on the methylene chain between two adjacent tertiary carbon atoms in the main chain of the copolymer are not observed, (iii) the liquid modified ethylenic random copolymer has a number average molecular weight ( M n), measured by a vapor pressure osmometer, of 200 to 10,000, and (iv) where the liquid modified ethylenic random copolymer is the epoxidized product, each epoxy group therein is positioned at the polymer chain end of the liquid ethylenic random copolymer, and the content of the epoxy groups is 0.01 to 0.5 mole per 100 g of the liquid epoxidized ethylenic random copolymer, and where the liquid modified ethylenic random copolymer is the hydroxylated product, each hydroxyl group therein is bonded to a carbon atom derived from ethylene or the alpha-olefin and positioned at the polymer chain end of the liquid ethylenic random copolymer, and the contents of the hydroxyl groups is 0.01 to 1 mole per 100 g of the liquid hydroxylated ethylenic random copolymer. Gel oils include oils such as mineral oil, polybutene spill inhibitors, as well as antioxidants and spill point lowering agents. The gel oil composition is stable in the use temperature range, is tacky, ductile, flow resistant under gravity, has excellent lubricity and avoids abrasion. Gel oils are particularly suitable for buffer tube gel applications and as filling compounds for waveguides.
