Stop-motions.-In a, combined singeing and warping machine, an electric stop-motion is operated and the burners turned off when the yarn breaks or when a measured length of yarn has passed through the machine. On breakage of a yarn, a detector completes a circuit which operates a mercury switch, and causes a relay to disconnect the mains supply. This stops the motor, and de-energizes an electromagnet which controls a. latch holding the bracket 62 against the tension of the chain 63; thus the weight 65 causes the lever 61 to rotate. The lever, through a series of links, rotates the burners to an inoperative, position. The circuit to the mercury switch is also completed, and the stop-motion operated when a given length of yarn has passed through an attached measuring machine, or when a switch is closed manually.

The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the ends c<1> of the chamber may be connected to suction devices. The gas pipe may be of square section open on the outer side and located between a central casing and the outer wall, the latter closing the outer side of the gas pipe. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.

Atmospheric gas burners; burners for special purposes.-In a gas singeing device for textile threads having a tube 5 forming the inner wall of the gas chamber 1, 2, a small number of perforations leading therefrom into the tube, a sieve 14 is provided within the tube 5. The gas passes through the sieve at reduced pressure through the large number of perforations thereof and burns at the inner side thereof as small flames. The sieve is supported by a flange 15 resting on the top of the burner body. The threads pass downwards as shown through an eyelet 8 and over a roller 7 both mounted on a flap 9 hinged at 10 so that the thread may be withdrawn from the singeing position when desired. The residues of combustion are removed by suction into the casing 11.

[Class 75 (i).] In a burner for singeing yarns in which gas is supplied through an outer chamber 1 to outlet apertures 5 disposed i n a helical path in a central singeing chamber 4 having a longitudinal slot 3 for the introduction of the yarn, the apertures of any one winding of the helix are arranged in staggered relation to those of the adjacent windings in such a manner that only after several or all consecutive windings does an aperture lie on a line extending longitudinally through the first aperture. As shown in Fig. 3, the apertures are arranged so that the corresponding apertures of each fifth winding are in alignment. The apertures may be inclined relatively to the longitudinal axis of the burner.

[Also in Division F4] A gas burner arrangement for singeing threads comprises a conical burner sleeve 5 mounted in a housing block 1 and having a slot (6) aligned with a slot (7) in the housing to allow lateral insertion of a thread 8 which passes over stripping rods 15 extending perpendicularly to the axis of the sleeve 5. An air and gas mixture passes through radial bores 13 in sleeve 5 to burn while forming small flames (14). By adjusting the gas supply the flames can be made so small as not to reach the thread 8 which is singed merely by contact with the heated roll 15.

Waste fibres are signed from the surface of a yarn by passing the yarn through an annular array of nozzle directing flames radially inwardly on to the yarn, and upstream and/or downstream of the array of nozzles are provided auxiliary nozzles through which a gas (pref. oxygen) can be directed on to the yarn. The gas can be used to control singeing by enriching the atmosphere in the region of singeing and also the ensure complete burning of the waste fibres after passage through the region of singeing. The device can be used with different yarns (e.g. natural, synthetic) requiring different singeing temps.

A pipe D, which may be supplied with air under pressure or be exhausted, is connected by flexible piping E with a passage A' leading to the slit A' of the traversing thread-guide, or with a nozzle secured to an ordinary thread-guide. The strikers may be used in conjunction with ordinary fixed nozzles provided with longitudinal slits in front of which the yarn traverses.

Stop-motions; stop-apparatus, non- automatic.-In spooling or winding frames, wherein singeing is effected, means operating automatically by the knee of the operator to stop the winding and throw the yarn clear of the jets are provided. The yarn is led over a guide 42, through a notch 43, round a support 7 and over a split drum 12 to a spindle 13 on which it is wound. The lifting of the rod 25 by the knee of the operator engaging the plate 26 thereon releases a catch 29, a spring 32 moves the rod forward and acting through an arm 35 causes a plate 40 to push the spindle 13 clear of the drum 12 and at the same time a link 36 swings the yarn support 9 on its pivot to throw the yarn clear of the jets. When the spindle 13 is fully wound, the arm 14 occupies the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this position a sector 18 secured to the arm 14 is raised clear of a tappet 21, which falls under the action of a weight 23 causing a screw 24 to lift the rod. The yarn support 9 carries guides 42, 7. A current of fresh air from a conduit 46 is provided between the operator and the jets.

The second pass occurs in a direction concordant with the first pass. A control and adjustment is provided of the tension of the yarn (11) in at least one point of the diversion, guide and return path, between the first pass (F1) and the second pass (F2).
