A method of applying stitching to an interior component is provided herein. The interior component having only a single layer of a substrate layer. The method including the steps of: a) penetrating substrate layer with an awl to form a piercing therethrough; b) retracting the awl from the substrate layer; c) inserting a needle of a robotic sewing head through the piercing through the substrate layer to grasp a thread positioned on a show surface of the outer skin layer; d) pulling the thread through the substrate layer; e) looping the thread with a previous stitch passed through the substrate layer; f) advancing the robotic sewing head to another position with respect to the interior component, wherein a backside of the substrate layer is free of obstructions; and g) repeating steps a-f until a predetermined amount of stitches are applied to the interior component.

In at least one implementation, a method for forming openings for a stitched seam in a composite panel having an outer layer, and a substrate behind the outer layer includes providing a laser beam onto the substrate, with the laser beam forming an opening through the substrate but not through the outer layer, and moving at least one of the laser or the substrate relative to the other so that a new opening can be formed that is spaced from the already formed opening. Successive openings can be formed in desired locations around the panel to facilitate subsequent panel stitching. In at least some implementations, the laser may form such openings while stitches are formed in the panel, wherein a stitch is provided in a previous opening while or nearly at the same time the laser forms a different opening for a subsequent stitch.

A decorative covering for a vehicle interior panel is made from two sheets of material joined together at a seam. The sheets of material have matching alignment features along respective edges to aid in visual alignment during the joining operation. A method of applying stitching to an interior component is provided herein. The interior component having only a single layer of a substrate layer. The method including the steps of: a) penetrating substrate layer with an awl to form a piercing therethrough; b) retracting the awl from the substrate layer; c) inserting a needle of a sewing head through the piercing through the substrate layer to grasp a thread positioned on a show surface of the outer skin layer; d) pulling the thread through the substrate layer; e) looping the thread with a previous stitch passed through the substrate layer; f) advancing the sewing head to another position with respect to the interior component, wherein a backside of the substrate layer is free of obstructions; and g) repeating steps a-f until a predetermined amount of stitches are applied to the interior component.

In an overedge seam comprising depth-stitch thread-loops 13 concatenated with edgeembracing thread-loops 17, designed particularly for buttonholes and the like, the edge-embracing loops 17 pass through the depth-stitch loops 13 on one face of the fabric (the lower in the drawing) in a direction away from that face while on the other face (the upper in the drawing) the depth-stitch loops 13 pass through the edge-embracing loops 17 in a direction towards this face. The concatenation of the loops is preferably between the edge and the depth-stitches on the former face and at the position of the depth stitches on the latter face, as shown, giving a padded effect on one face and resembling hand-stitching. It is stated that the stitch is easily set and thus suitable for delicate fabrics.
