The system may partition a score matrix generated for the input sequence pair into multiple sectors. While determining the cell content for each of the cells in the score matrix, the system may selectively retain computed cell contents for upper and left boundary cells of the partitioned sectors. During a traceback process, the system may retrieve the retained boundary cells for a current sector and recompute the cell contents for the current sector. Then, the system may determine the traceback path for the current sector. The system may continue to process sectors one at a time until the traceback path for the score matrix, and accordingly the optimal global alignment for the input sequence pair, is determined.

An indication of the temporal pattern is provided to at least a second region of the hierarchical neural network. A response to a further input is modulated based on feedback from the second region and at least one additional region. 1. A count of those of the plurality of neurons whose overlap exceeds an activation threshold of the neural network is determined. The count is compared to a predetermined neuronal activity target. The activation threshold of the neural network is adjusted to approach the predetermined neuronal activity target. 1. A method , comprising:for each of a plurality of neurons within an artificial neural network, determining an overlap value corresponding to active inputs connected to the neuron via synapses having non-zero synaptic weights;determining a count of those of the plurality of neurons whose overlap exceeds an activation threshold of the neural network;comparing the count to a predetermined neuronal activity target; andadjusting the activation threshold of the neural network to approach the predetermined neuronal activity target.2.
