Porous, textile floor covers with a backing of a locally placed, activatable adhesive are produced by (a) placing an adhesive (I) which only effects bonding of the floor covering to the floor on use of a pressure of at least 100 g/cm2, or a temp. of at least 50 deg.C, on at most half of the back of the floor covering, in such a pattern that adhesive-free intermediate spaces of more than 3mm are formed and (b) fixing the adhesive to the floor cover by use of a roller provided with grooves, so that the adhesive melts, so that the adhesive-free intermediate places remain available for the placement of an aqs. adhesive in the form of a soln. or dispersion (II). The floor covering can be immediately bonded to the floor by activation of the adhesive (I). The aqs. adhesive (II) enables permanent bonding to be effected, after the water has evaporated to form an adhesive film.

The composition is adapted for imparting to a textile a chemical finish that will resist moisture, release stains, and resist dry soiling.

A method for making tufted carpet, as well as the tufted carpet made by this method, are provided. Pile yarn fibers are tufted into a tufting backing, which is composed of a primary backing, a secondary backing, and an elastomer sandwiched between the primary and secondary backings. In another embodiment, the tufting backing comprises a primary backing and an elastomer applied to the primary backing, but does not include a secondary backing. In a preferred embodiment, the elastomer is applied to the primary backing in a non-contiguous form whereby voids are provided within the arrangement for the tufting backing to be tufted without the primary backing fibers being immobilized. After the pile yarn fibers are tufted into the tufting backing, the elastomer is heated such that it softens, allowing the elastomer to flow in and around the pile yarn fibers. The elastomer may then be cooled, thereby hardening the elastomer and bonding the pile yarn fibers to the primary backing.

In some embodiments, parachute buffer materials described herein comprise a fabric formed from a plurality of fibers and a coating disposed on at least one outer surface of the fabric. The fibers have an inner component formed from a thermoplastic material and an outer component formed from a non-thermoplastic material. In some cases, the fabric is a woven fabric. Additionally, the coating can comprise or contain a silicone along with, or without, other functional components. Moreover, materials described herein can be used to form various structures for parachute buffering applications, and the coatings of materials described herein can enhance the materials' buffering performance.

The textile material may be a tufted carpet or a net-like structure of fibrous yarns and the foam may be a pure natural latex, a synthetic latex or a mixture of latex with a synthetic latex and a synthetic resin dispersion. Suitable synthetic resins include polyvinyl compounds, polyurethanes and polyacrylic acid esters and a preferred foam material is a mixture of latex with polyvinyl acetate.

Filled thermoplastic compositions having enhanced elongation and useful, e.g., as sound-deadening sheeting for automotive carpet, are obtained by blending about 0-50% by weight of an ethylene interpolymer, such as ethylene/vinyl ester, ethylene/unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids or esters of said unsaturated acids, etc.; 0-20% by weight of a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of processing oils, epoxidized oils, polyesters, polyethers, polyether esters and combinations thereof; about 40-90% by weight of filler; from about 0.05 to about 5.0% by weight of at least one surface active agent such as sulfonates, sulfates, phosphates, etc.; and optionally, modifying resins, such as tackifiers and certain ethylene and propylene homo- and copolymers.

Provided is a carpet tile produced by using as a backing material a mixture which contains a solvent deasphalted asphalt and a copolymer of an olefin and a polar monomer, or a mixture which contains an amorphous polyolefin in addition to the above components. After applying the mixture as a hot melt to the back of carpet material, the backed carpet material is cooled and then cut or punched to produce the carpet tile.
