Tufted carpet having a backing fabric made of a water-impermeable material is back coated by applying to the backing fabric a latex composition comprising a carboxylated butadiene-styrene polymer latex having a particle size (defined) of at least 0.16 micron, and a mineral filler, and subjecting the coated fabric to heat e.g. 100 to 160‹C., to dry the composition. The copolymer may contain 70 to 30 parts by wt. butadiene to 30 to 70 parts by wt. styrene. The latex may be derived by copolymerising butadiene and styrene and from 0.5 to 8 parts by wt. per 100 parts by wt. of monomers of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or mono ester of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, e.g. fumaric, itaconic, acrylic and methacrylic acids, monoesters of fumaric and itaconic acids.
