FLEXIBLE SILICONE RESIN COATED FABRIC The method of this invention produces a silicone resin-coated fabric comprising an elastoplastic organopolysiloxane resin coated silicone elastomer membrane reinforced with fabric. The elastoplastic organopoly- siloxane resin and the silicone elastomer membrane form an interface which is an adhesive bond derived from a combination comprising (i) polydiorganosiloxane of the formula X(R2SiO)aSiR2X, (ii) a hydroxyl radical containing, solid, benzene soluble resin copolymer consisting essentially of R3SiOl/2 units and SiO4/2 units, and (iii) a condensation catalyst for (i) and (ii). The bond between the layers of the silicone resin-coated fabric is of such a quality that the silicone resin-coated fabric can be adhesively bonded to itself, or another surface, to produce useful structures such as air supported roofs or tension supported roofs.

In der Bauindustrie werden auch größere Flächen von Membranen abgedeckt. Sie haben den Vorteil, dass sie lichtdurchlässig sind. Der Vorteil der Lichtdurchlässigkeit bedingt aber auch den Durchtritt von Wärmestrahlen. Diese können insbesondere in heißen Ländern sehr nachteilig sein. Es ist bekannt, eine Glasscheibe mit einer Beschichtung zu versehen, die die Abstrahlung der Wärmestrahlen verhindert. Man verwendet dazu z. B. dünne Folien, die eine low-e-Eigenschaft (low-emittence) haben. Glas ist aber für größere Flächen zu schwer und wegen der Sprödigkeit zu gefährlich. Man kann ein transluzentes Element auch durch ein beschichtetes Gewebe mit genügender Festigkeit herstellen. Um nunmehr eine solche Membrane auch mit einer low-e-Beschichtung versehen zu können, wird vorgeschlagen, die Beschichtung aus Silikon oder modifiziertem PTFE herzustellen und diese mit einer weiteren low-e-Beschichtung zu versehen zur Verhinderung der Abstrahlung im infraroten Bereich.

The coating process comprises the steps of coating the textile with a coating compound, heating coated textile at a temperature of 120 degree Celsius and drying the coated textile for 60 seconds. Two passes of coating is applied for the process wherein the viscosity for first pass of coating is 21000 centipoise and the viscosity for second pass of coating is 12000 centipoise. On completion of the coating process, the coated textile is treated with a water repellent agent. The coating compound used for the process is an aromatic compound, polyurethane mixed with methyl ethyl ketone and the water repellent agent is silicone. The overall process requires a curing time of 2 minutes with a curing agent.

Coated inflatable fabrics, more particularly airbags to which very low add-on amounts of coating have been applied, are provided which exhibit extremely low air permeability. The inventive inflatable fabrics are primarily for use in automotive restraint cushions that require low permeability characteristics (such as side curtain airbags). Traditionally, heavy, and thus expensive, coatings of compounds such as neoprene, silicones and the like, have been utilized to provide such required low permeability. The inventive fabric utilizes an inexpensive, very thin coating to provide such necessarily low permeability levels. Thus, the inventive coated inflatable airbag comprises a film laminated on at least a portion of the target fabric surface wherein the film possesses a tensile strength of at least 2,000 and an elongation at break of at least 180 %. The film provides a low permeability airbag cushion exhibiting a leak-down time of at least 5 seconds as well as a very low packing volume (for more efficient use of storage space within a vehicle) for the target side curtain airbag.

Novel airbag coating compositions comprising at least two separate and distinct layers are provided. The first layer (base coat), being in contact with the airbag surface, comprises a composition of at least one coating material which may comprise up to 30% by parts of the total amount of material in the first layer of a silicone resin which provides excellent adhesion, excellent tensile strength, and overall lower cost than standard silicone airbag coating materials. The second layer, being a coating for the first layer, provides excellent reinforcement and blocking characteristics to permit effective potential long-term storage and optimum use upon the occurrence of a collision. Such a second layer (topcoat) is preferably a silicone material but may also be selected from the group consisting of homopolymer and coplymer resins based on ethylene, propylene, acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl esters, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, polyurethanes, polyamides, and inorganic materials such as talc, silica, silicate, calcium carbonate, alumina, and the like. This two-layer system permits excellent strength and blocking properties to prevent undesired adhesion between portions of the target airbag when stored as well as to prevent seam combing at relatively low cost due to the materials and the relatively low amount required for the topcoat. An airbag fabric coated with this inventive two-layer system is also contemplated within this invention.
