This invention describes a novel method for selectively delignifying lignocellulosic materials and bleaching of pulp and dyes using a combination of an oxidative enzyme and a metal complex. More specifically, the process involves the oxidation of a transition metal redox complex by a phenol oxidizing enzyme such as laccase or peroxidase to mediate the catalytic delignification of chemical pulp and bleaching of textile dye. This process is unique in that only a catalytic amount of metal complex mediator is required on softwood or hardwood kraft pulp, and that recycling or regeneration of the mediator for further pulp delignification is possible. The redox mediator is characterized in that it contains a transition metal ion coordinated with molecules or ions in such a way that the complexes have a formal redox potential between 0.5 and 1.2 volt measured against a normal hydrogen electrode.

Method for giving a faded and aged appearance to cotton textiles comprises first washing with hot water to eliminate finishing agents and then treating (in a rotating-drum washing machine) with pumice and lime or a calcium salt. The machine is then exptied and the materials subjected to a series of hot and/or cold water rinses. The rinses are carried out in presence of the pumice and also, for one rinse, of an acid. Pref. the first stage is at 80 deg.C for 10 min. and the machine is rotated at 50-150 rpm. For every 100 kg of textiles, 150-250 kg pumice, 30-100 kg lime or Ca salt and 140-300 l water are used. The method is esp. applied to denim. Treated garments are soft in to the tough and resemble those which have been aged/faded by normal extended wearing.

"PROCESSO PARA OXIDAR UM SUBSTRATO" Esta invenção descreve um novo processo para deslignificar seletivamente materiais lignocelulósicos e para o alvejamento de polpas e corantes usando uma combinação de uma enzima oxidativa e de um complexo metálico. Mais especificamente, o processo envolve a oxidação de um complexo de redox de metal de transição por uma enzima que oxida fenol, tal que lacase ou peroxidase, para mediar a deslignificação catalítica de polpa mecânica e para o alvejamento de corante têxtil. Este processo é único pelo fato de que apenas uma quantidade catalítica do mediador do complexo metálico é requerida em polpa Kraft de madeira mole e de madeira dura, e pelo fato de que é possível a reciclagem ou regeneração do mediador para deslignificação de polpa posterior. O mediador de redox é caracterizado pelo fato de que ele contém um íon de metal de transição coordenado com moléculas ou íons, de tal modo que os complexos possuam um potencial de redox formal entre 0,5 e 1,2 volt, medido contra um eletrodo de hidrogênio normal.
