The first and second twists may be executed simultaneously, each have a density of more than 25 turns per meter, be helical and in opposite directions to each other. A single rope may be combined with a matrix material to form a rod. Ropes may be knitted or woven into a fabric and may be used to from a composite material. Resin for a composite may be added after formation of the rope. For use in aircraft or vehicles.

The present invention is directed to a method and a system for the production of at least one polymeric yarn comprising means for mixing a polymer ( 1 ) with a first solvent yielding a mixture; means for homogenizing the mixture; means for rendering the mixture inert ( 21, 22, 23 ); means for dipping the mixture into a quenching bath ( 30 ), wherein an air gap is maintained before the mixture reaches the quenching bath ( 30 ) liquid surface forming at least one polymeric yarn; means for drawing ( 41 ) the at least one polymeric yarn at least once; means for washing ( 5 ) the at least one polymeric yarn with a second solvent that is more volatile than the first solvent; means for heating the at least one polymeric yarn ( 6 ); means for drawing at room temperature ( 7 ) the at least one polymeric yarn at least once; and means for heat drawing ( 8 ) the at least one polymeric yarn at least once. The instant invention also concerns a system and method of dosing a polymer mixture with a first solvent into an extruder ( 26 ), a device ( 5 ), a system and a method of solvent extraction from at least one polymeric yarn, and a method and system of mechanical pre-recovery ( 4 ) of at least one liquid in at least one polymeric yarn.

A method of making colored multifilament ultrahigh molecular weight polyolefin yarn, including feeding at least one substantially untwisted multifilament ultrahigh molecular weight polyolefin yarn, coating the substantially untwisted multifilament yarn with a coating composition comprising colorant in a thermoplastic resin carrier, with the coating composition being adhered to the filaments of the multifilament yarn, and heating the multifilament yarn while stretching the yarn without fusing of the filaments of the multifilament yarn. The resultant yarn is a colored multifilament yarn having improved color-fastness. The thermoplastic resin has a lower melting point than the filaments of the multifilament yarn. The invention further relates to gel-spun UHMWPE fibres produced thereof. The gel-spun UHMWPE fibres of the invention have a tensile strength of at least 4 GPa, and a creep rate of at most 5×10 −7 sec −1 as measured at 70° C. under a load of 600 MPa. The gel-spun UHMWPE fibres produced thereof are useful in a variety of applications, the invention relating in particular to ropes, medical devices, composite articles and ballistic-resistant articles containing said UHMWPE fibres.

0 By poststretching, at a temperature between about 135° and 160°C, a polyethylene fiber, which has already been oriented by drawing at a temperature within 5°C of its melting point, an ultra high modulus, very low creep, low shrink, high tenacity polyolefin fiber 'having good strength retention at high temperatures is obtained. The poststretching can be in multiple stages and/or with previous annealing. The poststretching should be done at a draw rate of less than 1 second-'. Tensile modulus values over 2,000 g/d (178.6 GPa) for multifilament yam are consistently obtained for ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, with tensile strength values above 30 g/d (2.5 GPa) while at the same time dramatically improving creep [at 160°F (71.1 °C) and 39,150 psi (2758.3 kg/cm 2 ) load] by values at least 25% lower than fiber which has not been poststretched. Shrinkaqe is improved to values less than 2.5% of the original length when heated from room temperature to 135°C. Performance at higher temperature is improved by about 15° to 25°C.

A high strength abrasion resistant surgical suture material with improved tie down characteristics is color coded for visualization and identification purposes. The suture features a multifilament cover formed of strands of ultra high molecular weight long chain polyethylene braided with polyester, nylon or a bioabsorbable material. Selected nylon fibers in the cover are provided in a color contrasting with the other cover fibers to provide an identifiable trace. The cover surrounds a core formed of twisted strands of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. The suture, provided in a #2 size, has the strength of #5 Ethibond, is ideally suited for most orthopedic procedures, and can be attached to a suture anchor or a curved needle. The identifiable trace preferably is provided along one half of the length of the suture, so that when the suture is loaded onto a suture anchor, for example, the two legs of the length of suture on either side of the suture anchor can be readily identified.

The surface fusion between and among filaments imparts desirable handling characteristics to the ultrahigh molecular weight, gel spun polyolefin yarns and fishing lines that are similar to those of a conventional monofilaments. Preferably, the temperature, residence time, and stretching ratio at the selected temperature are chosen to provide a fishing line exhibiting a tensile modulus within the range from about 230 g/d to about 780 g/d with a tenacity of at least 15 g/d.
