A continuous cyclic process for the production of chlorine dioxide includes the formation of a gaseous mixture of chlorine dioxide, chlorine and steam from an aqueous reaction medium containing sodium chlorate and hydrochloric acid at an activity below about 1N. Chlorine dioxide is recovered from the gaseous mixture. Sodium chloride formed in the reaction is deposited in the reaction vessel and is removed therefrom. Steam stripper off gas from chemical pulp mills, for example kraft or sulphite pulp mills is rich in methanol and totally reduced sulphur (TRS) compounds. This gaseous stream is usually burned to avoid further handling of this TRS-rich, odorous stream. We found that once this gaseous stream is condensed, it can be used as a reducing agent in the chlorine dioxide generator, in place of purchased methanol. Surprisingly, we found that, in addition to the methanol component, the TRS components act as reducing agents during the production of chlorine dioxide or, at the very least, do not consume chlorine dioxide. The use of this stream in the ClO2 generator will allow pulp mills to reduce or eliminate the consumption of purchased methanol while providing a new approach to deal with TRS compounds in the chlorine dioxide generator rather than employing a dedicated TRS incinerator or any other combustion device.

The method allows the mill to decrease the usage of sodium hydroxide or other alkali, while decreasing the use of chlorine dioxide, and possibly improving the yield and strength of the pulp, while maintaining a similar level of bleached brightness of the pulp. The pulp bleaching method of the present invention may be performed in a pulp mill as part of a complex pulp bleaching process.

A process is disclosed for the preparation of an essentially sulphide-free alkali liquor starting from an alkali sulphide source. The alkali sulphide source is reacted in alkaline medium with copper (II) oxide and/or copper (I) oxide, optionally with the addition of water, in a mole ratio of oxide to sulphide (calculated as alkali sulphide) (charging) of at least 0.9. The mixture obtained is allowed to react at a temperature of from 30 to 130.degree.C to form hydroxide in an amount equivalent to the amount of sulphide and to precipitate a solid phase consisting essentially of copper (I) sulphide, copper (II) sulphide ox a mixture thereof. Thereafter, the solid phase is separated in a manner known per se to obtain an essentially sulphide-free alkali liquor. The reaction time of the precipitation reaction is adjusted with regard to the charging and temperature selected so that the residual concentration of copper ions in the final alkali liquor is below 1 mmole/litre.

A pulp in accordance with a particular embodiment includes crosslinked cellulose fibers. The pulp can have high brightness, reactivity, and intrinsic viscosity. A method in accordance with a particular embodiment of the present technology includes forming a pulp from a cellulosic feedstock, bleaching the pulp, crosslinking cellulose fibers within the pulp while the pulp has a high consistency, and drying the pulp. The peracetate solution may include peracetate anions and a peracid. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution may include a pH from about pH 10 to about pH 12. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution has a molar ratio of peracetate anions to peracid ranging from about 60:1 to about 6000:1. In some embodiments, the peracetate solution has a molar ratio of peracetate to hydrogen peroxide of greater than about 16:1. The peracetate oxidant solution may provide enhanced treatment methods of bleaching, brightening, and delignifying pulp fibers involving the use of peracetate oxidant solutions.

In some embodiments, the peracetate solution has a molar ratio of peracetate to hydrogen peroxide of greater than about 16:1. The peracetate solution may provide bleaching, sanitizing and/or disinfection of contaminated water and surfaces. A pulp in accordance with a particular embodiment includes crosslinked cellulose fibers. The pulp can have high brightness, reactivity, and intrinsic viscosity. The pulp, therefore, can be well suited for use as a precursor in the production of low-color, high-viscosity cellulose derivatives. A method in accordance with a particular embodiment of the present technology includes forming a pulp from a cellulosic feedstock, bleaching the pulp, crosslinking cellulose fibers within the pulp while the pulp has a high consistency, and drying the pulp. The bleaching process can reduce a lignin content of the pulp to less than or equal to 0.09% by oven-dried weight of the crosslinked cellulose fibers. Crosslinking the cellulose fibers can include exposing the cellulose fibers to a glycidyl ether crosslinker having two or more glycidyl groups and a molecular weight per epoxide within a range from 140 to 175. 1. The method of claim 3 , wherein the oxidation bleaching stage (OX) is carried out at an acidic pH with an iron catalyst and hydrogen peroxide.5. Oligomeric formal diols are prepared by coupling segments of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycols, each having a molecular weight of 650-3000, with formaldehyde in the presence of a granular acidic catalyst, to yield poly(tetramethylene ether) formal glycols of 1,400-12,000 molecular weight. Oligomeric formal diols of a second type can also be prepared by coupling with formaldehyde segments of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycols mixed with segments of other polymeric glycols, as for example polyethylene oxide glycol of 200 molecular weight, to yield poly(ether formal) glycols of substantially higher molecular weight than either of the starting polyether glycols, and having properties significantly different from the parent polyether glycols that may affect the performance as soft or elastomeric segments of derived polyurethanes, polyetheresters, and polyureas. Yet a third type of oligomeric formal diols can be prepared by coupling monomeric diols, as for example 1,4-butanediol, with formaldehyde to yield higher molecular weight poly(oxybutylene formal) glycols.

In particular, the pulp soaking step allows the pulp stream to be mixed with the alkali feed and stay for a sufficient period of time in order to alkali hydrolyze the colored material from the pulp and expand the pulp fibers. The pulp stream is then mixed with an oxygen feed and processed through a mixer. The output of the mixer is fed to a pressurized reactor where oxygen reacts with lignin of the pulp fibers. The expanded pulp fibers promote the reaction of oxygen with lignin and the removal of additional colored material.

The delivered gas-enriched liquid is produced by a process comprising the steps of: a) preparing a mixture of gas and liquid; b) compressing the mixture to a pressure such that the gas completely dissolves in the liquid to form a gas-enriched liquid; c) enclosing the gas-enriched liquid within a confined space while retaining substantially the same pressure. The confined space has at least one dimension less than about 0.2 mm, and has at least one opening to a liquid or gas environment site of interest having a lower pressure than that of the pressure of the confined space; and d) delivering the gas-enriched liquid from the confined space out through the at least one exit opening to the lower pressure environment without formation of bubbles.

Unbleached pulp is combined with an aqueous alkaline solution while in a state of low consistency to distribute a first amount of alkaline material substantially uniformly throughout the pulp. The consistency of the pulp is then increased to above about 18%, and the high consistency alkali containing pulp is then treated with oxygen to effect delignification. The total amount of alkaline material applied to the pulp is between 0.8 and 7% by weight of oven dry pulp. High strength, low lignin pulps are subsequently formed which may be further bleached to high brightness with reduced amounts of chemicals.

1. Способ отбелки химической целлюлозы, в котором начальная отбелка целлюлозы включает первую обработку диоксидом хлора (D0), включающую также добавление щелочи в целлюлозу после добавления диоксида хлора, и последующую щелочную обработку кислородом и пероксидом водорода (EOP), причем указанная обработка отделена от указанной первой обработки стадией промывки, при этом указанный способ включает, кроме того, обработку целлюлозы для уменьшения содержания переходных металлов в целлюлозе до указанной обработки пероксидом, в соответствии с чем начальная отбелка содержит последовательность D0N EOF, отличающийся тем, что pH целлюлозы указанным добавлением щелочи устанавливают на значение от 8 до 11 перед указанной стадией промывки, таким образом органические вещества в целлюлозе растворяются и будут удалены из целлюлозы на указанной стадии промывки как фильтрат, содержащий также большую часть образованных хлоридов, причем не допускается поступление этого фильтрата в систему утилизации, и содержание хлоридов в фильтрате со стадии промывки после указанной стадии EOP снижается. ! 2. Способ по п.1, отличающийся тем, что обработка целлюлозы для удаления переходных металлов состоит в кислотной обработке (A) целлюлозы и следующей промывки перед стадией D0N, в соответствии с чем последовательность стадий начальной отбелки есть A D0N EOP. ! 3.
