Shingle Coloring System

Номер: US20130095293A1
Принадлежит: Building Materials Investment Corp

Disclosed painted roof coverings and related methods of manufacturing such painted roof coverings that use a color coating over the roof coverings instead of embedded pre-colored rock granules on the exposed surface of the roof coverings. By painting a roof covering with a color coating, any kind of top surfacing material, such as rock, plastic, mineral, man-made, or organic granules, may be used in place of the pre-colored rock granules. In some embodiments, it is desirable to size the top surfacing material to provide adequate UV protection and coverage to the weatherproofing asphalt material located below the top surfacing material. Further, the color of the shingles may be accurately matched between batches of shingles, between manufacturing facilities, and even between manufacturers. In addition, designs may be painted on the surface of the roof covering, which was previously impossible using pre-colored granules.

High Speed Granule Delivery System and Method

Номер: US20150044365A1
Автор: Svec James A.

A high speed granule delivery system and method is disclosed for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated strip in the manufacture of roofing shingles. The system includes a granule hopper and a rotationally indexable pocket wheel in the bottom of the hopper. A series of pockets are formed in the circumference of the wheel and the pockets are separated by raised lands. A seal on the bottom of the hopper seals against the raised lands as the wheel is indexed. In use, the pockets of the pocket wheel drive through and are filled with granules in the bottom of the hopper. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated strip below and its granules fall onto the strip to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt. The speed at which the wheel is indexed is coordinated with the speed of the asphalt coated strip so that granules and strip are moving at about the same forward speed or at a preselected ratio of speeds when the granules fall onto the strip. Well defined patterns of granules are possible at high production rates. 1. A shingle manufacturing system comprising:a conveyor for moving an asphalt coated strip in a downstream direction at a predetermined rate;a hopper disposed above the conveyor and defining an interior volume for receiving and containing granules to be dispensed onto a moving asphalt coated strip below, the hopper having a lower end potion;a wheel having a periphery and being rotatably mounted at the lower end portion of the hopper;at least one depressed pocket and at least one raised land formed in the periphery of the wheel;the wheel being positioned such that rotation of the wheel causes the at least one depressed pocket to move repeatedly through a first position exposed to granules contained in the hopper and a second position exposed to an asphalt coated strip below the hopper; anda drive mechanism operatively coupled to the pocket wheel for rotating the pocket wheel according to ...

Method and Apparatus for Sharp Color Definition on the Application of Granules to Roofing Substrates

Номер: US20150072073A1
Автор: Svec James A.
Принадлежит:

A high speed granule delivery system and method is disclosed for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated substrate in the manufacture of roofing shingles. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated substrate below and its granules fall onto the substrate to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt. The speed at which the wheel is indexed is coordinated with the speed of the asphalt coated substrate so that granules and substrate are moving at about the same forward speed or at a preselected ratio of speeds when the granules fall onto the substrate. Well defined patterns of granules are possible at high production rates. A method for creating sharp linear color definition between granule patches at high line speeds also is disclosed. 1. A method of creating adjacent patches of different colored granules on an asphalt coated substrate moving in a downstream direction in the manufacturing of shingles , the method comprising the steps of:(a) defining a series of spaced apart first areas along the asphalt coated substrate designated to receive granules of a first color and defining a series of spaced apart second areas adjacent to and between the first areas designated to receive granules of a second color;(b) conveying the asphalt coated substrate along a production path in the downstream direction at a predetermined line speed;(c) applying a partial charge of granules of the first color into the first areas to create granule patches having a sharp leading edge, an indistinct ...

A roofing shingle is provided comprising a reduced-with headlap portion including headlap projections, a buttlap portion including buttlap projections, a lateral leading edge, and a lateral trailing edge, wherein the headlap projection nearest the lateral leading edge has an increased breadth. A roofing system is also provided comprising a multiplicity of courses of shingles of the invention, wherein a lateral trailing edge of a shingle in a single course overlaps (side-laps) an adjacent previously installed shingle, and wherein a shingle in a subsequent course provides a generally uniform overlap region over the headlap portions of a first and second adjacent shingle in the first course and an expanded overlap region over the second adjacent shingle, wherein the expanded overlap region is due to the increased breadth of the headlap projection nearest the lateral leading edge of the second adjacent shingle in the first course. 1. A roofing shingle comprising:a headlap portion, a buttlap portion, a lateral leading edge, and a Lateral trailing edge;wherein said buttlap portion includes a plurality of buttlap projections extending away from the shingle defining a maximum buttlap width and a plurality of recessed horizontal buttlap portions;wherein each of said buttlap projections includes a horizontal edge defining a projected horizontal buttlap portion;wherein each said projected horizontal buttlap portion has a primary horizontal breadth that is about equal for each said projected horizontal buttlap portion, and is about equal to the breadth of at least one of said recessed horizontal buttlap portions;wherein said headlap portion includes a plurality of headlap projections extending away from the shingle defining a maximum headlap width and a plurality of recessed horizontal headlap portions;wherein each of said headlap projections includes a horizontal edge defining a projected horizontal headlap portion;wherein a first of said projected horizontal headlap portions ...
