The usual operating ratio is 2:1 but, at a selected point, this is changed to 1:1 by a ratio conversion unit 5, which changes the position of the inner panel cable anchor point 4 thus balancing both window panels and eliminating the use of counterweights. Pivoted-window opening and closing apparatus. -Sashes hung, on central pivots are operated by worm gear acting on a squared shaft f passing through the pivot d', the actuating mechanism being concealed in the frame. The shaft f is rotated by a worm wheel driven by a worm on the shaft j which is rotated by similar worm and wheel and handle n. The shafts j and f and the worm gear are sunk in the frame and covered by facing strips. The sash pivot consists of a, plate screwed to the sash and provided with a boss d' pivoting in a socket in the frame. The worm and wheel are housed in intersecting cylindrical bores in a casing and each is carried between a fixed annular shoulder and a screwed plug. Two windows at the same level may be operated by the same shaft and worm gear. The frame stops allow the sashes nearly to reverse on their pivots for cleaning &c. The operating mechanisms for sashes one below the other are on opposite sides of the frame.
