A movable barrier operator (10) includes a wall control switch module (39) having a learn switch (39b) thereon. The switch module (39) is connectable to a control unit (70) positioned in a head (12) of a garage movable barrier operator. Each type of transmitter has at least one command button that when actuated generates a signal which includes at least a transmitter identifying code. A controller ( 60 ) is connected to the receiver and the controller stores each transmitter identifying code in a corresponding storage location. The controller overwrites one of the transmitter identifying codes in a corresponding storage location when a new transmitting code is learned if the plurality of storage locations are full, except for the transmitter identifying codes for one specific type of the plurality of transmitters. In the preferred embodiment, the specific type of transmitter is a wall station transmitter ( 42 ) with more than one function button. The different types of transmitters may be provided with corresponding levels of overwrite priority.

The wall station includes a transmitter programming button ( 24 ), wherein actuation of the transmitter programming button places the wall station transmitter in a learn mode, and wherein subsequent actuation of the remote transmitter positively identifies the remote transmitter for use with the wall station. A light ( 66 ) powered by the operator and a light actuation button ( 18 ) provided by the wall station transmitter is included in the system. The system also includes an accessory device such as a light fixture or switch that controls a load, wherein the device is capable of also receiving wireless signals to control the fixture or the load. The system allows for pre-storing of an operator serial number that is needed to communicate with the accessory devices. The operator serial number may also be randomly derived from a timer or by parsing a serial number generated by one of the transmitters.

A movable barrier operator includes a wall control switch module having a learn switch thereon. The switch module is connectable to a control unit positioned in a head of a garage movable barrier operator. Likewise, end of travel limits can also be set during a learn operation upon installation of the unit. The movable barrier operator also includes an ambient temperature sensor which is used to derive a motor temperature signal, which motor temperature signal is measured and is used to inhibit motor operation when further motor operation exceeds or is about to exceed set point temperature limits.
