The drive system including a housing coupled to the longwall shearer, a motor, and a sprocket at least partially positioned within the housing and drivingly connected to the motor. The sprocket is engaged with the rack and moves the longwall shearer along the rack. A shoe maintains the sprocket in engagement with the rack. The housing is configured to rotate relative to the longwall shearer such that the drive system adjusts for vertical height variations and horizontal variations of the rack.

Described herein are several methods and apparatuses for treating a cutter tool adapted to be used in tunnel boring operations. In one form, an initial cutter member blank is formed and heat treated prior to a laser cladding process. An alloy is often applied to the surface of the cutter blank adjacent to the cutting elements by the cladding process whereby the cladding process has insufficient heat transfer from the cladding process to reduce hardness properties of the inserts and/or the cutter blank. In one example a fabric-like material defines the region of the exterior hard surface. 1. A method of treating a cutter tool , the method comprising:a) preheating the tool to at least 350° F.b) identifying a gum region positioned in the outer portion of the cutter tool,c) employing laser cladding to the gum region adjacent to cutting elements,d) whereas the cutting elements have a hardness higher than that of the surrounding gum region adjacent thereto and the heat transfer to the cutting elements from the laser cladding process is insufficient to materially alter the hardness of said cutting elements and the gum region is more resistant to erosive wear.2. The method as recited in whereby the cladding process applies a cladding material at a thickness s greater than 0.030 of an inch.3. The method as recited in whereby the heat transfer to the cutting elements does not raise the temperature of the cutting elements above 900° F.4. A non-rotatable cutter bit for mining and construction operations having a central longitudinal axis extending therethrough includes an insert at one end. The insert has a central longitudinal axis and the apex is offset from the central longitudinal axis to provide an elongated rake face. With the insert mounted within the cutter body, the central longitudinal axis of the cutter body intersects with the apex such that the cutter body may be easily exchanged with conventional cutter bodies. The insert may also be mounted directly to the body without using an insert holder. The insert also has applications in oil and gas drilling operations.

A milling pick , comprising:a pick head including a bearing surface;a pick shank coupled directly or indirectly to the pick head;a pick tip made of a hard material harder than the pick head, the pick tip being connected to the pick head; a counterface configured to engage the bearing surface of the pick head;', 'an underside support surface; and', 'a disk thickness defined between the counterface and the underside support surface at an outer periphery of the wear-protection disk; and, 'a wear-protection disk including a cut-out, the pick shank being received through the cut-out, the wear-protection disk includingwherein a ratio of a diameter of the pick shank adjacent the cut-out to the disk thickness is in a range of from 1.5 to 3.75.14. The milling pick of claim 13 , wherein:the ratio of a diameter of the pick shank adjacent the cut-out to the disk thickness is in a range of from 2 to 3.15. The milling pick of claim 13 , wherein:the underside support surface is parallel to the counterface.16. The milling pick of claim 13 , wherein:the cut-out is a drilled hole.17. The milling pick of claim 13 , wherein:the counterface includes recesses configured such that second surface segments of the counterface are formed between the recesses; andwherein the second surface segments rest at least in some areas against the bearing surface of the pick head.18. In a cutting tool ( 106 ) for a tunnel boring machine, a tool head ( 115 ) equipped with at least one wear sensor ( 315 ) is present that is detachably connectable to a tool holder ( 206, 321 ). A line arrangement having a wireless, connector-free coupling module ( 312 ) between the tool head ( 115 ) and the tool holder ( 206, 321 ) is provided for connecting the or each wear sensor ( 315 ) to an evaluation module ( 330 ). In this way, in the event of wear, a tool head ( 115 ) to be replaced may very easily be removed from the tool holder ( 206, 321 ) and a new tool head ( 115 ) may be connected to the tool holder ( 206, 321 ) very easily and in an electrically safe manner. A tunnel boring machine equipped with at least one cutting tool ( 106 ) of this type is thus operable in a very efficient manner.
