Fuel is provided by conventional direct or port injection and ignition is provided by one or more conventional spark plugs. Exhaust exits the combustion chamber (58) through a poppet valve (60) in the cylinder head (18), the poppet valve (60) being actuated by a rocker arm (68) and pushrod (66) from a crankshaft driven cam (62).

An oil lubrication and control system, for an engine having cylinder deactivation switching lifters operated at the pressure of the full oil system, is provided with an auxiliary pressure relief valve which opens to control maximum oil pressure in the system whenever the engine speed and temperature conditions lie beyond the ability of the oil pump pressure control unit to maintain the maximum pressure limit. Addition of the auxiliary pressure relief valve allows extended operation of the switching lifters, which are limited by their construction to operation below a prescribed pressure limit. In a preferred embodiment, the auxiliary pressure relief valve is mounted in the engine crankcase in a bore connected directly with the main oil gallery to provide mounting and actuation of the auxiliary pressure relief valve with a minimum of modifications to the engine oil system design.

The two-stroke engine (10) has a plurality of intake passages (40a, 40b) extending from the external air inlet port through the crankcase (12), separating the intake air charge from the air and oil vapor within the crankcase (12). The piston (44) has one or more corresponding inlet tubes (48a, 48b) depending therefrom that telescope within the crankcase intake passages (40a, 40b) as the piston (44) reciprocates. All intake air travels through these passages (40a, 40b) and is separated from the remainder of the crankcase volume. The incoming air charge passes through a concentric poppet valve (52) in the piston crown (54) to enter the combustion chamber (58). Fuel is provided by conventional direct or port injection and ignition is provided by one or more conventional spark plugs. A modular cylinder head is configured for use with combustion engine block configurations each having different valvetrain oiling pathways. Thus, when used with “LA-style” engine blocks, oil receiving/delivery ports provided by the cylinder head are compatibly interfaced with an oil outlet port provided by the engine block, thus allowing oil to pass from the engine block into the head for delivery to a valvetrain carried thereby. Alternatively, when the head is used with “Magnum-style” engine blocks, the oil receiving/delivery ports of the head are not used. Rather, a pushrod and lifter having internal ports are used by the cylinder head to allow oil to pass from the engine block, through the internal ports of the lifter and pushrod, and into the valvetrain.

A valve spring mounted on the stem of the valve extends and compresses coincident with the rotation of the cam guides and contact of the roller ends with the outer races of the cam guides thereby actuating the lifter to open and close the valve with positive force and wherein the point of contact for valve opening and closing transfers between the engagement of the roller ends with the outer races and the radius against the cam during the various engine phases with the valve spring holding the valve in the closed position during certain phases through the exertion of positive force.

The valve actuation system may have a rocker shaft, a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the rocker shaft, at least one cam follower and a pushrod connecting the at least one cam follower to the rocker arm. In one embodiment, cam towers adjacent the end two cylinders are not used. At least one end support is used, which may be an outboard bearing on a camshaft for each end. The wider rocker assemblies may then be installed. In another embodiment, cam towers adjacent the inner two cylinders are eliminated and a single camshaft support piece with a support bearing is installed between the inner cylinders to provide support for the camshafts. The wider rocker assemblies may then be installed on at least one of the middle cylinders. A novel oil control valve operates latches in switching rocker arm assemblies.

Diesel Engine and Method for Flexible Passive Regeneration of Exhaust After-Treatment Devices

A diesel engine and method for operating a diesel engine with exhaust after-treatment device regeneration capability are disclosed. The diesel engine may employ an exhaust after-treatment device such as a diesel particular filter to remove soot from the combustion gases exhausted by the engine. In order to regenerate the exhaust after-treatment device, the temperature of the exhaust gases is raised sufficiently to do so. The temperature of the exhaust gases is raised to such a level by employing multiple compression and expansion strokes of the piston in certain engine cycles, with a combustion event associated with each pair of compression and expansion strokes. The engine may operate in a four stroke, one combustion cycle during conventional power operation, and switch to an enhanced combustion cycle during regeneration. The enhanced combustion cycle may include eight strokes such as one intake stroke, three compression strokes, three expansion strokes, and one exhaust stroke, with three combustion events. The engine may switch between cycles by using a cam follower with lost motion device capability, an electrical actuator, or any other selectively actuable valve actuator to prevent opening of the intake and exhaust valves during regeneration.
