A vane-type camshaft phaser having a rotational authority between 40 crank degrees before TDC and 30 crank degrees after TDC. The phaser includes a stator seat formed at a rotation position intermediate between full advance and full retard. A locking pin in a vane of the rotor engages the seat, locking the rotor at the intermediate position. The pin is disengaged by pressurized engine oil independent of oil flows for advance and retard of the rotor. The oil is controlled by a dedicated valve. Preferably, the seat and the ends of the locking pin are vented by passages in the rotor and stator which are aligned when the rotor is at the selected locking angle to remove oil resistance to entry of the pin into the seat. To position the locking pin over the seat, phasing rate is reduced to allow time for the locking pin to engage the seat.

A control device inserted in the vane selectively opens and interrupts a flow connection between the working chambers. A locking device prevents relative motion between the rotor and the stator in that the rotor is fastened to the stator at a vane position. A switching valve, which has three working ports, a P port and a T port, can be moved into different control positions by an adjusting element,—wherein in the control position, the P port communicates with the working chambers via the A port, the B port is blocked at the switching valve, and the T port communicates with the control device of the vanes via the C port. In a control position provided as a starting strategy for the switching valve the A port communicates with the P port and the working chambers, the B port communicates with the T port and the working chambers, and the C port communicates with the control device of the vanes and the T port.

A valve timing adjuster includes a first rotor, a second rotor, a control valve, and a lock mechanism. The lock mechanism includes a retard limitation pin and an advance limitation pin, each of which is provided to the second rotor. The lock mechanism includes a retard limitation groove and an advance limitation groove, each of which is formed to the first rotor. The retard limitation groove and the advance limitation groove are designed to limit the displacement of the retard limitation pin in the retard direction and simultaneously limit the displacement of the advance limitation pin in the advance direction in order to lock the first rotor and the second rotor. The valve timing adjuster alternately increases the oil pressure in the retard chamber and the oil pressure in the advance chamber when the lock of the first and second rotors is released.
