According to a second aspect, the invention relates to a finisher component having a connecting web of convoluted shape and to an assembly of tube and outer sleeve employing this finisher component. The finisher component preferably has low thermal conductivity and an S-, Z- or Σ-shaped cross section. It may be made of ceramic composite, ceramic or a combination of metallic and ceramic materials. Preferred application is in engine exhausts, the finisher component sealing the heat insulation between an exhaust pipe and a surrounding sleeve while avoiding thermal bridging.

The outer end of the duct (24) is clamped against the cylinder head (12) by the exhaust manifold (32) so that there is an annular gap between duct (24) and exhaust passage (21). This gap is open to the exhaust gases passing through the valve so that a jacket of hot stagnant gas surrounds the duct (24). This jacket of hot gas ensures complete combustion of any unburnt hydro-carbons before they are discharged to the atmosphere. In an alternative design the duct (24) is provided with an additional jacket of thermally insulating material.

A catalytic converter has a metallic monolith that is mounted in a canister by a heat-insulating mat of melt-formed refractory ceramic fibers that have been annealed to provide a Resiliency Value of at least 10 kPa. Previously known melt-blown fibers used in such mats were thought to require a fine-grained crystalline structure to have a higher resiliency value. However, a mat in accordance with the invention having a Resiliency Value of at least 10 does not take a compression set that would allow the monolith to become loose, is made from ceramic fibers which are preferably melt-formed from a mixture of about equal parts by weight of Al2O3 and SiO2. After being annealed, the ceramic fibers can have a fine-grained crystalline structure, but significant energy savings can be realized by reducing the annealing temperatures and times such that the fibers have an amorphous structure while still attaining excellent Resiliency Values.

The radial support(26) may be inserted before or after bending. In a further process the inner tube sections(12,14) are polygonally calibrated and after insertion into one another are twisted relative to each other until contact is made between the sections(12,14). A process and an apparatus for forming an air gap pipe are provided. Inner and outer pipes are bent or deformed into comparable configurations such that the inner pipe can be mounted within the outer pipe. The outer pipe then is split longitudinally by a preprogrammed cutting apparatus. The cutting of the outer pipe terminates just short of the complete longitudinal length of the pipe to facilitate rematching later in the process. The cutter includes a follower to trace the actual configuration of the pipe and thereby to offset differences from one pipe to the next. An array of clamps are provided to align the outer pipe halves relative to one another and to facilitate the reattachment.
