Systems and methods for skip fire spark ignition engine operation with a lean NOx trap after-treatment are provided. This system includes engine control circuitry capable of fueling and firing subsets of the engine's cylinders. Other cylinders are not provided fuel and are not fired (i.e. “skip fired”). The system includes an exhaust manifold for channeling the exhaust from at least some cylinders through a multistage catalytic converter. This may include a standard two-way or three-way catalytic converter. From the catalytic converter the exhaust may be channeled through a lean NOx trap. The lean NOx trap is able to chemically absorb the NOx emissions for regeneration according to a regeneration protocol. Lean NOx traps may include a substrate, an absorption material (also referred to as a ‘sorbent’) and a catalyst. The regeneration protocol may include monitoring NOx emissions downstream from the lean NOx trap, and comparing them against either a threshold or a lean NOx trap saturation model. Once the NOx emissions reach the threshold, or deviate from the model, a regeneration cycle may be performed.

A hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) catalyst is regenerated using a nitrogen-based reductant agent. The HC-SCR catalyst is in communication with a power system such as an internal combustion engine and receives exhaust gasses from the internal combustion engine. Sulfur in the exhaust gasses may deactivate the HC-SCR catalyst by sulfur oxides forming thereon. To remove the sulfur oxides, a nitrogen-based reductant agent is introduced to the exhaust gasses. The nitrogen-based reductant agent decomposes to nitrogen oxides and hydrogen. The hydrogen reacts with the sulfur oxides to form hydrogen sulfides thereby removing the sulfur oxides from the HC-SCR catalyst.

The diagnostic procedure may include sampling first and second pressures at first and second operating conditions, respectively, and then comparing the first pressure differential between the first and second pressures with one or more threshold pressure differentials to determine whether system components such as a dosing line and an injector are at least partially blocked. If such a test is not conclusive, it may be repeated at a third and fourth operating conditions to provide a second pressure differential. The offset between the first and second pressure differentials may also be used to help diagnose where a blockage in the system resides.

A reactor apparatus and method for removing and/or reducing NOx, CO, carbon particulates and hydrocarbons from exhaust gases produced by industrial processes includes a reactor including an inlet plenum, a reaction chamber, an outlet plenum, and a heat exchanger wherein gases exiting the reaction chamber heat gases entering the reaction chamber. EGR is drawn through a cooling heat exchanger with an injection blower and is delivered through control valves to the reaction chamber, the inlet plenum and to an add fuel mixing chamber whereby mixed fuel and EGR is delivered to the reaction chamber. A feedback controller controls the flow valves responsive to the temperatures in the reaction chamber entrance and the outlet plenum.

A vehicle includes a NOx storage converter to receive exhaust gases from a diesel engine, store at least a minimum amount of the NOx at a temperature below a storage threshold, release the NOx at a temperature above a releasing threshold, oxidize hydrocarbon, and oxidize carbon monoxide. An input temperature sensor at an entrance to the NOx storage converter determines an input temperature of the exhaust gases. An output temperature sensor is at an output of the NOx storage converter to determine an output temperature of the exhaust gases. A control module receives the input temperature and the output temperature, determines a magnitude of an exotherm in the NOx storage converter, and stores an electronic fault code in a computer memory in response to the magnitude of the exotherm being below a minimum temperature. The fault code indicates a reduction in a NOx storage capacity of the NOx storage converter.

An internal combustion engine has an exhaust treatment system with a fluid injection system and a swirl can plenum mixer for mixing injected fluid with exhaust gas exhausted from the engine. The mixer comprises a canister having an inner plenum. A bulkhead separates the inner plenum into an exhaust gas collector and a diffuser chamber. A flow port opens through the bulkhead to a tangential flow director on the downstream side of the bulkhead to collect the exhaust gas. A fluid injector port receives a fluid injector for dispensing a fluid into the exhaust gas for mixing with the exhaust gas in the swirl can plenum mixer. A tangential flow director nozzle is configured to dispense the exhaust gas and fluid into the downstream plenum in a tangential flow trajectory, wherein mixing and vaporization of the exhaust gas and fluid mixture with the exhaust gas is accomplished.

A high-temperature NOx occlusion reduction type catalyst in which an NOx occlusion material containing an alkali metal is supported, and a low-temperature NOx occlusion reduction type catalyst in which an NOx occlusion material containing an alkaline earth metal is supported, are disposed in series on an upstream side and a downstream side, respectively, of an exhaust gas purification system. An oxidation catalyst is disposed on an upstream side of the high-temperature NOx occlusion reduction type catalyst. The desulfurization of the NOx occlusion reduction type catalysts is facilitated, and the NOx reduction efficiency is improved by the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas, while a wide NOx active temperature window is achieved.
