A free-piston engine is supercharged by compressed air supplied by a compressor 1 driven by an exhaust driven turbine 13. Compressed air from the compressor is conducted to outer return chambers and is used for starting the engine. As shown an electric motor 29 is used to drive the compressor at starting. The compressor supplies air to piping 8, 9. When the pressure reaches a predetermined value a valve 16 opens and the air can operate a piston 21 which opens valves 25, 251 controlling the supply of starting air to the return chambers 28, 281. A pressure retaining valve 14 is included in the exhaust passage 12. It is stated that the pressure retaining valve is inoperative during starting. It may be omitted if desired. The engine drives pairs of hydraulic pumps 4, 41. It is possible to use hydraulic or pneumatic starting means instead of the electric motor 29.

Abstract of the Disclosure Ignition-Assisted Fuel Combustion System Conventional direct injection internal combustion engines will not completely ignite and burn relatively lower-cetane-number fuels such as 100 percent methanol or ethanol because the fuel spray injection pattern usually cannot carry or propagate a flame to all the injected fuel which is typically made up of individual fuel streams which are separated by pockets of fuel-deficient intake air. The present fuel combustion system includes a fuel ignition-initiating device such as a glow plug and apparatus for interconnectedly contacting and continuously bridging all of the individual fuel streams with an auxiliary cloud of well-atomized fuel. In this manner, a flame initiated by the fuel ignition-initiating device is rapidly and completely propagated via the auxiliary cloud of fuel to all the individual fuel streams.

A four-cycle internal combustion engine has a permanent curtailed intake process, which allows the temperature and pressure of intake air to the combustion cylinders to be tightly controlled, and enables a very small combustion chamber so that a much higher compression ratio and pre-ignition compression pressure can be achieved without approaching the air/fuel mixture auto-ignition threshold. The maximum threshold of curtailed intake volume is determined to be 68% of engine cylinder volume to achieve a compression ratio CR of 18 or higher. Because this design can effectively regulate and set the maximum pre-ignition temperature of the fuel-air mixture, it can combust virtually any type of liquid hydrocarbon fuel without knocking. This four-cycle engine, due to its higher compression ratio, generates power equivalent to or greater than a standard four-cycle engine in a smaller and lighter engine and at a much higher efficiency.

The cooling water circuit (12) includes an exhaust gas heat exchanger (18), an air preheater (23), a radiator (15) and also supplies heat to the fuel evaporator (4). There is an auxiliary water circuit (25) containing an alcohol-fired heater (27). Thermostatic valves are arranged in the water circuits to give the most advantageous thermal conditions for the various phases of cold starting and running of the engine.

The engine may run on a mixture of 40% alcohol and water, the mixture flowing from the carburettor through a heat exchanger inlet and through the perforations in the inner walls into the central chamber which is heated by the engine exhaust gases flowing through the tubes. The heated mixture then flows to the engine past ionising electrodes. When starting from cold, the fuel is heated by the electric elements embedded in the ionising plugs. The electrodes are coupled to a high voltage source comprising an electronic oscillator which is coupled to the primary winding of a transformer, a rectifier being coupled to the secondary winding of the transformer.

An engine 10 is disclosed in which a first group of engine cylinders 14 operate in HCCI combustion mode only and a second group of engine cylinders 12 operate in SI combustion mode only. A first EGR duct is arranged to provide flow from an exhaust 18 of the first group of cylinders 14 to an intake of the first group of cylinders 14 and a first EGR valve 72 is disposed in the first EGR duct to control this flow. A second EGR duct is arranged to provide flow from an exhaust 16 of the second group of cylinders 12 to the intake of the first group of cylinders 14 via a second EGR valve 70 disposed in the second EGR duct. By adjusting the EGR valves 70, 72 the temperature of the gas flowing to the first group of cylinders 14 can be controlled. During a cold start, the second EGR valve 70 is opened to pull exhaust gas from the second group of cylinders 12 through the first group of cylinders 14 so as to preheat them.

The present invention entails a method and apparatus for producing alcohol and mixing the produced alcohol with a conventional petroleum fuel to form an alcohol-petroleum fuel mix which is typically referred to as gasohol. A grain base material such as animal feed or crushed corn is allowed to ferment and during this process there is produced an alcohol base solution which is removed from the mash fermentation and delivered to a boiler mounted on a vehicle. During operation of the vehicle, heat from the vehicle engine exhaust is selectively directed to the boiler and the fermented alcohol base solution contained therein is heated by this exhaust air. As the alcohol base solution is heated there is produced an alcohol vapor which is directed from the boiler to a condenser where the alcohol vapor becomes liquid alcohol. The liquid alcohol is then collected and selectively mixed with a petroleum fuel carried by said vehicle to form the gasohol mix. Once formed, the gasohol mix is then directed to a carburetor operatively associated with the vehicle engine where the gasohol is metered into the engine.

A subsidiary circuit from this with a pump (23) circulates water through the fuel evaporator. An auxiliary tank (25) contains a gaseous fuel such as methane. A combined stop and pressure reducing valve (26) admits this into the evaporator (4). A thermostat (29) on the evaporator opens the valve when the cooling water temp. is below a preset value.

According to the present invention, main and sub combustion chambers (3, 4) into which fuel is fed directly in atomized state and in each of which a swirl (S₁, S₂) is formed, are formed in communication with each other in a top portion of a piston (1), in order to use not only gas oil but also other volatile fueld of low cetane number such as gasoline and alcohol. Further, in order to improve the combustion performance, fuel is supplied into the sub combustion chamber (4) in a finely pulverized state for easier evaporation, and fuel is adhered as liquid films to the main and sub combustion chambers (3, 4). By so doing, ignition is ensured in all load conditions and it becomes possible to effect evaporation and combustion on the wall surface of each combustion chamber. Consequently, it is possible to obtain a combustion performance which is low in combustion noise and vibration and also low in the formation of unburnt matter.

Further, in the medium load zone of the HCCI region, the lift amount of the intake valve (11) is gradually increased up to a second predetermined value greater than the first predetermined value, along with an increase in an engine load. The engine control system is capable of adequately controlling an amount of burned gas to be introduced into a cylinder, depending on the engine load to allow the HCCI combustion to be adequately performed in a wider engine load range.

Generic methods and injections valves are generally known from the prior art. The aim of the invention is to provide a method which makes it possible to avoid an incomplete closure of the valve due to soiling (danger of a damage caused by a gasoline-filled crankcase) at operating states of the internal combustion engine where no complete stroke of the injector pin occurs over a prolonged period of time and the nozzle is therefore not sufficiently scavenged. According to the invention, the nozzle is scavenged with fuel when an open jamming operating state of the injector pin is detected.
