An apparatus for starting an engine, including a motor, an output shaft driven by the motor, a pinion provided along the output shaft, and an electro-magnetic solenoid device. The electro-magnetic solenoid device is configured to push the pinion axially toward a ring gear of the engine to mesh the pinion with the ring gear and transfer a rotational force, which is referred to as a motor torque, generated by energization of the motor from the pinion to the ring gear, thereby starting the engine. The apparatus is configured such that, at starting of the engine in its warmed-up state, the motor torque can continue to be applied from the pinion to the ring gear until at least the second compression stroke even when an engine speed varies. 1. Disclosed is an electric starter with a manual turning function. A main shaft, a drive gear mechanism, a shift fork, an electromagnetic relay guide rod and a first return spring are arranged in a housing of the electric starter. A gear shifting mechanism comprises a force receiving component which extends out of the housing of the electric starter and serves as an external force applying point so as to promote the electromagnetic relay guide rod to move rightwards, a normally closed switch for cutting off a power supply of the electric starter when the force receiving component moves to an extreme position, a positioning component for locking the force receiving component when the force receiving component moves to the extreme position, and a first return component which enables the force receiving component to automatically returns to an original state when the force receiving component is unlocked. The main shaft is indirectly driven to rotate by the turning mechanism via a transmission mechanism or directly driven to rotate by the turning mechanism via a turning tool. An improvement is made to a structure of a traditional electric starter without affecting existing functions thereof, i.e., a function of manual turning is added. Therefore, a flywheel gear of a motor can be precisely positioned during maintenance so as to improve efficiency and eliminate potential safety hazards.

A method for monitoring the starter includes determining electrical energy consumed by pinion and motor solenoids operative to activate and rotate a pinion gear of an electrically-powered motor meshingly engageable to a starter ring gear portion of a flywheel of the engine during an engine starting event. Current ringing in the pinion and motor solenoids is monitored during the engine starting even, and a fault is identified in the pinion and motor solenoids based upon the current ringing and the electrical energy consumption of the starter during the engine starting event. 1. Method for monitoring pinion and motor solenoids of an electrically-powered motor for a starter of an internal combustion engine , comprising:monitoring current and electrical energy consumed by said pinion and motor solenoids of the starter during an engine starting event;determining electrical energy consumed by the pinion and motor solenoids during the engine starting event;monitoring current ringing associated with activation of the pinion and motor solenoids during the engine starting event; andidentifying a fault in one of the pinion solenoid and the motor solenoid based upon the current ringing and the electrical energy consumed by the pinion and motor solenoids during the engine starting event.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the electrical energy consumed by said pinion and motor solenoids during the engine starting event comprises:monitoring battery voltage and current flow through the pinion and motor solenoids during activation of the motor solenoid prior to activation of the pinion solenoid;determining an equivalent resistance of the pinion and motor solenoids based upon said battery voltage and current flow;determining current flow during the engine starting event based upon the equivalent resistance of the pinion and motor solenoids; anddetermining solenoid energy based upon the current flow during the ...

A method of controlled stopping an internal combustion engine having a stop-start mode and starter assembly includes detecting when the stop-start mode is active. The method also includes monitoring current rotational speed and position of the engine. An electric starter system is used with an engine. The starter system may include a solenoid device coupled to a pinion gear, a brushless starter motor connectable to the engine via the pinion gear during a requested engine start event, and a controller. In response to the start event, when the engine speed is less than a threshold speed, the controller delivers a control current to the solenoid device at a peak current level sufficient for translating the pinion gear into contact with the flywheel. An electric starter system is usable with a powertrain having an engine with a flywheel. The starter system includes a brushless starter motor having a machine temperature, and a solenoid operable for translating a pinion gear into meshed engagement with the flywheel and the starter motor in response to a requested engine start event.
