The output signal of the circuit (15-24) rapidly retards the ignition point by an electronic adjuster. In addition to the speed limiting, the device provides a fuel mixture regulation. In this manner the device provides a sudden and quick speed limiting without overheating of the engine. The overheating is prevented by simultaneous fuel mixture control which, even with some retard, prevents excessive overheating. The battery voltage is transformed to higher d.c. voltage. This is used for charging a capacitor via a resistor, which is discharged by ignition of a thyristor over the prim. of the appropriate ignition transformer. An electronic ignition system for an internal combustion engine. In a first embodiment an input pulse is generated by a pick up (10) at the same point in each revolution of the engine. Clock pulses at a first pulse rate are counted in an up counter (22) between consecutive input pulses. The resulting count signal is transferred to a down counter (30) which, between the consecutive input pulses, counts down at a faster rate. For an eight cylinder engine this faster rate is four times the first pulse rate, for a six cylinder engine it is three times the first pulse rate, and for a four cylinder engine it is twice the first pulse rate. In a second embodiment a computed count signal is preset into a down counter which is then counted down. In each embodiment, when the down counter reaches its zero count level the count signal is againt preset into it so that it recycles. A microcomputer is used in the invention for control of the ignition functions of an ignition system of an i.c. engine. A switch in an operating handle or the like is connected via a transistor to a digital input of the computer. This reads the status of the switch once every revolution of the engine and as long as the switch is closed the ignition is delayed at an r.p.m. above a predetermined, programmed value (e.g. 3000 r.p.m.) and the r.p.m. of the engine is restricted. When the engine shall work the switch is opened and the ignition is normal. The restriction is used at start in order to avoid speeding during the start procedure. As a complement to said switch a parallel switch can be connected and operated by a brake device of the engine. During braking the r.p.m. of the engine is thereby restricted to the same value as the r.p.m. during the start.

The invention relates to an improved ignition system for spark ignited combustion engines. The electrode 17 moves against a return spring 18 and is conductively attached to an angled portion 21 of a conductive cap 13 having integral tongues 28, 29 which are a press fit into recesses 22, 23 formed in the insulating rotor body 12. Ignition current from the distributor cap is normally fed by an electrode 19 via tongue 29 of the conductive cap and a suppressor resistor 20 encased in resin 30 to a distributor electrode 14 and thence to a plurality of spark plugs but at maximum admissable engine speed the centrifugal electrode 17 approaches the earth electrode 16 and the ignition current is discharged to earth to interrupt the ignition process and thus prevent further speed increase. The earth electrode 16 is of one-piece leaf spring construction being a press fit on the rotor body 12 in a groove 31 at one end 16b and having a contact end 16a supported by a rib 35.

An object of the present invention is to provide a semiconductor device in which the collector current Ic of the output stage IGBT does not oscillate in the operating processes of a self shut down circuit and a current control circuit, and thus the ignition plug is prevented from erroneous ignition and the size of the device is minimized. A semiconductor device for ignition performing a current control function and a self shut down function comprises a pulse generating circuit 23, a switching circuit 22, and a current source circuit 21, the three circuits together generating pulse current that discharges a capacitor 44 in the self shut down process. This construction suppresses oscillation of collector current Ic of the output stage IGBT 4 in the operating processes of the current control circuit 3 and the self shut down circuit 17, thus preventing the ignition plug 11 from erroneous ignition. In addition, the discharge of the capacitor 44 in a pulsed mode allows down-sizing of the capacitor 44, which contributes to minimization of the semiconductor device.

The speed limiter is suitable to be retrofit onto existing ignition systems.

The signal processing circuit receives the noisy ignition coil signal and from it derives a clear signal which may be used to supply an electronic rev counter, and electronic carburation mixture control, or an excess speed warning device. The circuit used comprises a D-type flip-flop whose clock input is connected to the ignition coil. The signal input is biased to a fixed constant level. The output signal from the flip-flop is connected to the return-to-zero input via a delay element. The components of the circuit are formed on a single micro-chip of semiconductor substrate, and fitted into a standard box to minimise production cost. The circuit produces a square wave output with a set pulse duration instead of the pulse of higher frequency produced by the ignition coil.

As a result, it is possible to suppress the feel of disorder, which might otherwise be felt by a driver when the engine is operated at a relatively high speed. In accordance with the operated state of the engine, moreover, the ON/OFF timing of the intake valve can be better optimized to control a variable valve timing mechanism more properly.

Diese Informationen werden in dem Zusatzgerät verarbeitet und entsprechend des momentanen Zustandes schaltet dieses ein Relais, welches den Zündstromkreis unterbricht, bis die zulässige Kaltdrehzahl erreicht ist. Durch die Schaltung ist garantiert, daß in der Warmlaufphase des Motors die entsprechende Drehzahl eingehalten wird. The invention avoids engine damage which can occur if the engine, which is still cold, is loaded with an engine speed that is too high. In particular, it concerns the following damage: loss of compression, high fuel consumption, valve damage. Since not every vehicle is equipped with an oil or water temperature display and not every car driver has to refer to the above. Displays, the upper permissible cold speed can easily be exceeded. To remedy these circumstances, an additional device is used, which records the current oil temperature and engine speed from the engine. This information is processed in the additional device and, depending on the current state, it switches a relay which interrupts the ignition circuit until the permissible cold speed is reached. The circuit guarantees that the appropriate speed is maintained when the engine is warming up.

The ignition system includes an optoelectronic time base generator which produces two sets of timing pulses relative to crankshaft position which are non-advanced timing pulses and advanced timing pulses. The time base generator comprises a LED-phototransistor pair and an encoder disk attached to the crankshaft with slots to interrupt the emission path between LED-phototransistor pair. The non-advanced pulses are generated based upon the trailing edge of each slot while the advanced pulses are generated based up the leading edge, wherein the width of the slots indicate the degree of advancement of the advanced schedule over the non-advanced schedule. Both schedules are inhibited based on a high overspeed condition and a low overspeed condition when the engine is overheated, wherein there is a smooth transition between the two conditions.

The invention simplifies the structure of a magneto generator and stabilizes the operation of an internal combustion engine at the time of start-up, thereby providing an ignition device simplified in structure and reduced in size and providing improved safety to the internal combustion engine. In an ignition device for a capacitive discharge internal combustion engine, an ignition timing signal is calculated with a cycle detection signal obtained at a timing at which a forward voltage portion of an output voltage from a generator coil has reached a cycle detection voltage for making continual ignition operations available, and a peak voltage detection signal and a start-up voltage detection signal are obtained in accordance with a delayed reverse voltage portion of the output voltage from the generator coil. In a preset normal region speed or less in which a load is coupled to the engine, an ignition signal is output immediately after the peak voltage detection signal has been generated. In a normal region speed or more, an ignition signal is output after the duration of the ignition timing signal from the point in time of output of the cycle detection signal. At the time of start-up, an ignition signal is output in response to the start-up voltage detection signal according to the cycle detection signal. This eliminates the need of a coil for generating a timing signal and provides a safe start-up operation.

The encoder disk is provided with a synchronizing slot, multiple timing slots associated with the cylinders of the engine, and an direction slot. The direction of the rotation of the engine can be sensed by the spatial relationship between the synchronizing slot and the direction slot. The non-advanced pulses are generated based upon the trailing edge of each timing slot while the advanced pulses are generated based up the leading edge, wherein the width of the timing slots indicate the degree of advancement of the advanced schedule over the non-advanced schedule. Both schedules are inhibited based on predetermined operating parameters of the engine or the detection of a reverse engine operation.

Verfahren zum Betrieb eines Verbrennungsmotors, wobei der Verbrennungsmotor einen Zylinder (2), in dem ein Brennraum (5) ausgebildet ist, Einrichtungen zur Zufuhr von Kraftstoff und von Verbrennungsluft sowie eine Zündeinrichtung zur Zündung von Gemisch im Brennraum (5) besitzt, wobei dem Verbrennungsmotor Kraftstoff und Verbrennungsluft zugeführt werden und das Gemisch im Brennraum (5) gezündet wird, wobei der Brennraum von einem Kolben (7) begrenzt ist, der eine in einem Kurbelgehäuse (3) drehbar gelagerte Kurbelwelle (25) antreibt und wobei eine Steuerung vorgesehen ist, die die Zufuhr von Kraftstoff und die Zündung des Gemischs im Brennraum (5) steuert, und wobei der Verbrennungsmotor einen Abregelbereich (41) besitzt, in dem der Verbrennungsmotor so gesteuert wird, daß die Drehzahl (n) abfällt, wobei in dem Abregelbereich (41) des Verbrennungsmotors der Zündzeitpunkt (ZZP) auf einen späteren Zeitpunkt verstellt wird, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Verbrennungsmotor einen Hochdrehzahlbereich (40) besitzt, in dem die Drehzahl (n) oberhalb der Nenndrehzahl (n) und unterhalb der Drehzahl (n) in dem Abregelbereich (41) liegt, und daß der Verbrennungsmotor in dem Hochdrehzahlbereich (40) so gesteuert wird, daß die Anzahl der Verbrennungen in einem Verhältnis von 1 zu 4 bis 1 zu 10 zur Anzahl der Motorzyklen steht. A method for controlling an ignition system of an internal combustion engine having a primary firing pulse generator for charging a capacitor. An electronic switch is included for discharging the capacitor via an ignition coil to generate an ignition voltage. A microcomputer operates the switch to control the ignition timing of the generator. The microcomputer is in communication with a speed sensor that detects the rotational speed of the engine and a speed limitation control that limits the engine speed to a limitation speed below the clutch-in speed of an included centrifugal clutch. The speed limitation control is active or activated when one of either starting the engine or an operating problem of the power tool is detected. The speed limitation control is deactivated when a low speed state of the engine is detected.

Apparatus for limiting the rotational speed of an internal combustion engine by monitoring the time interval between ignition impulses produced when a breaker switch in the primary circuit of the ignition coil opens. A pair of sequentially operable timers are started for each ignition pulse with the second time interval enabling a delay means coupled between the source of pulses and a control gate of a controlled switch connected across the breaker switch through an impedance. When a following pulse occurs during the second time interval, indicating a limiting rotational speed, the slightly delayed pulse triggers the controlled switch and the ignition pulse is shunted through the impedance with the resulting secondary voltage in the ignition coil being insufficient to cause a spark, thereby limiting the speed of the engine.

A speed-limiting device of the electronic ignition type for the internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle is equipped with an AC generator driven to rotation by the engine, such a generator comprising a feeding coil for the electronic ignition circuitry and a pickup winding for controlling the sparking of the engine spark plugs is characterized in that the signal of said control of the sparking for the igniting spark is cut off by short-circuiting to ground the pickup winding via a diode which is governed by the voltage generated by said feeding coil of the ignition circuitry, a voltage which is appropriately processed by a specially provided electric circuitry so as to become proportional to the generator speed as the voltage in question overtakes a threshold magnitude as preset by a specially provided sensing member.

When a normal operation is detected by a self-interruption signal source and a first transistor is on, if an on-signal is inputted to an IN terminal, a second transistor is turned on and a third transistor is turned off. Accordingly, an IGBT is turned on. In this state, if an abnormality is detected by the self-interruption signal source, the second transistor is turned off and the third transistor is turned on. Accordingly, a gate terminal of the IGBT is connected to an emitter terminal via the first and third transistors, and charges accumulated by gate capacitance of the IGBT are rapidly discharged. Consequently, if a comparator detects that a collector voltage of the IGBT has exceeded a predetermined voltage, the first transistor is turned off, and gradual interruption in which the charges accumulated by the gate capacitance are gradually released by a resistor is performed.

An engine speed limiter is disclosed in which the ignition primary winding is shorted to limit engine speed whenever an ignition pulse is received by a switch at the same time that a switch is gated on by a positive output pulse from a timing circuit. A signal conditioning circuit receives a positive-going pulse from the ignition primary winding and outputs a conditioned signal to the timer to begin the timer's positive output signal. The speed limiter is suitable to be retrofit onto existing ignition systems.

When a power demand Pe* is not less than a preset reference value Pref 2 in a vehicle stop state (steps S 110 and S 260 ), a target rotation speed Ne* of an engine is set to a rotation speed of not lower than a relatively low minimum rotation speed Nemin 2 (step S 290 ). A target timing VT* is set according to the set target rotation speed Ne* to have a smaller degree of advance, compared with the setting of the target timing VT* in an engine operating state for driving the vehicle (step S 300 ). The engine is accordingly driven at the target rotation speed Ne* with an open-close operation of an intake valve at the target timing VT*. Such drive control effectively reduces the driver's uncomfortable feeling or odd feeling triggered by operation of the engine at a relatively high rotation speed in the vehicle stop state. The drive control also ensures the better open-close timing of the intake valve according to the operating condition of the engine and enables more appropriate control of a variable valve timing mechanism configured to adjust the open-close timing of the intake valve.
