A shock-absorber is designed to be used in particular with a motor cycle or a motor car. The shock-absorber is so arranged as to permit the variation of the shock-absorbing capacity or the resistance of the shock-absorber by means of control impulses from an external unit in the form of a computer (40). The shock-absorber is of the kind which comprises a cylinder (2) operating with a fluid or with fluid/gas. Inside the cylinder is a fixed piston (3) which is provided with at least one passageway. In this passageway fluid is able to flow from one side (3a) of the piston to its other side, and vice versa. In the damping force generating mechanism 26, damping force is generated by a pilot-type main valve 27 and a normally-open pilot valve 28 which is a solenoid valve, and the damping force is adjusted by energization of a coil 37. A fail-safe valve 100 is provided downstream of the pilot valve 28. During normal operations, the fail-safe valve 100 opens the flow path through excitation of the coil 37 of the pilot valve 28. In the event of a failure, due to loss of excitation, the fail-safe valve 100 restricts the flow path to generate an appropriate damping force in place of the pilot valve 28, which has become inoperable.

A damper valve is located in the main fluid passage. A pressure regulation valve in the auxiliary passage uses the hydraulic pressure between itself and a fixed opening, to apply it as a pilot pressure to the damper valve. The pressure regulation valve has a valve chamber between a cylindrical section and a slide block moving in the section. An axial thrust in the block is caused by a differential between surfaces in the valve chamber to accommodate a pressure, acting in direction of the block axis. A valve opening pressure is regulated corresponding to the balance between the thrust of the slide block and that of a magnet.

A solenoid valve of a shock absorber is provided to simplify the structure and assembling work for the solenoid valve by integrally forming a valve retainer with the solenoid valve. A solenoid valve(100) of a shock absorber comprises a housing(110), a disc valve(120), and a back-pressure chamber(130). The back-pressure chamber presses the disc valve from a rear portion of the disc valve. The disc valve covers a first fluid path(122a) which is perpendicular to a valve retainer(122) of the disc valve. The valve retainer is connected to a high-pressure fluid path(2a) of the shock absorber through a connector(121). High-pressure fluid is introduced from the high-pressure fluid path through the connector and then flows to the disc valve through the first fluid path. The disc valve includes a plurality of discs which are deformable to form the damping force.

The damping force control valve comprises a main valve opened or closed according to pressure of the high pressure region, initial preload and pressure of the pilot chamber, the main valve allowing working fluid to flow from the high pressure region to the low pressure region when being opened; a first fixed orifice formed between the high pressure region and the first variable orifice; and a back pressure forming channel for making the first fixed orifice and the pilot chamber communicate with each other and controlling the pressure of the pilot chamber when the spool closes a channel connecting the high pressure region and the pilot chamber.
