A planetary gear system (P) includes a sun gear ( 2 ), a ring gear ( 4 ) a carrier ( 6 ) located between the sun and ring gears ( 2, 4 ), and planet pinions ( 8, 10 ) organized in two arrays and supported on flexpin assemblies ( 32, 34 ) in the carrier ( 6 ). All of the gearing is helical, with the sun and ring gears ( 2, 4 ) having their teeth arranged in at double helix angles (herringbone) and the planet gears ( 8, 10 ) at single helix angles. The pinions ( 8 ) of the one array engage the teeth of one angle on the sun and ring gears ( 2, 4 ) and the pinions ( 10 ) of the other array engage the teeth of the other angle on the sun and ring gears ( 2, 4 ). Torque transfers through the carrier ( 6 ) through two torque paths (a, b)—one to the flexpin assemblies ( 32 ) for one array and the other to the flexpin assemblies ( 34 ) of the other array—and the paths (a) is stiffer than the path (b). Owing to the helical cut of the teeth the planet pinions ( 8, 10 ) of the two arrays exert oppositely directed axial forces (A) on the sun gear ( 2 ). The sun gear ( 2 ) is free to shift axially or float with respect to the planet pinions ( 8, 10 ) of the two arrays, so the axial forces (A) imparted to the sun gear, while opposite, are equal. Hence, the tangential forces (T), which transfer the torque, are likewise equal, notwithstanding the difference in flexibility of the two torque paths (a, b). Even though the carrier ( 6 ) may undergo different deflections at the flexpin assemblies ( 32, 34 ) for the two arrays of planet pinions ( 8, 10 ), the planet pinions ( 8, 10 ) of the two arrays transfer torques of equal magnitude.

A method of rotating an output gear at a rotational rate that is slower than an input rotational rate. The input rotation moves a planetary gear in a circular motion about a central axis. A first stage external gear configuration of the planetary gear engages with an internal gear configuration of a stationary gear. The engagement rotates the planetary gear about a concentrically located planetary gear rotational axis. A second stage external gear configuration is rotated by and at a same rate the first stage external gear configuration. The first stage diameter and/or number of teeth differs from the second stage diameter and/or number of teeth. The planetary gear rotation in conjunction with the difference between the first and second stages causes the output gear to rotate respective to the stationary gear. An epicyclic gear assembly includes a carrier that includes a first plate axially spaced from a second plate by a connector. A first epicyclic gear set is supported adjacent the first plate and includes a first set of circumferentially offset intermediate gears meshing with a first sun gear and a first ring gear. A double eccentric positioning apparatus uses two equal offset eccentric bushings to accurately position a tool (such as a drill bushing) in two dimensions. Miniature servo motors and precise gearing control the rotation of each eccentric bushing, which controls the direction of the offset vectors. The offset vectors are used to determine the final position of the drill bushing. The desired rotation angles can be mathematically calculated based on desired position. The inner eccentric bushing is located concentric to the offset of the outer eccentric bushing. This allows any position, within a radius of two times the eccentric offset, to be achieved. A drive module includes a Ravigneaux gearset, first and second input shafts, shift member, and differential. The first planet gears of the gearset can engage the first sun gear and the second planet gears, which can engage the second sun gear. The first input shaft can rotate with the second sun gear and receives torque from a first motor. A first gear can be coupled to the carrier of the Ravigneaux gearset for rotation therewith and meshingly engages the differential input. The second input shaft receives torque from a second motor and is drivingly coupled to the differential input.
