A method of executing an electric-only (EV) mode transition in a vehicle includes determining vehicle operating values using a control system, processing the values to identify the transition, and executing the transition to or from the first or second EV mode. The transition is executed by selectively engaging and disengaging the input brake to zero, and by using the first and/or second traction motor to synchronize slip across the input brake. When the transition is from the first to the second EV mode or vice versa, the control system may use multiple speed and torque control phases to enter multiple intermediate modes, e.g., a pair of engine-on electrically-variable transmission modes and a fixed gear mode. A vehicle includes an engine, an input brake, first and second traction motors, and a transmission driven via the motors in a first and second EV mode. The vehicle includes the control system noted above.

Engagement of a clutch in the rear shiftable gearing arrangement establishes an underdrive ratio between the output shaft and the intermediate shaft. Engagement of another clutch in the rear shiftable gearing arrangement constrains the speed of the input shaft to be a weighted average between the speed of the intermediate shaft and the output shaft.

A drive system including a transmission for a hybrid electric vehicle is provided. The system includes a gear set having first, second, third and fourth elements. The second element connects with an output shaft of the transmission and a first output shaft of an internal combustion engine connects with the third element for driving the third element. An electric motor having an output shaft connecting with the first element drives the first element in response to an electrical signal. An electric motor-generator unit has an output shaft which connects with the fourth element for driving the fourth element in response to an electrical signal. A second output shaft of the engine also connects with the fourth element through the unit for driving the fourth element. The resulting system has a plurality of different operating modes including a reverse gear or operating mode powered electrically and by the internal combustion engine.

The gear train includes an output shaft rotationally coupled to a gear assembly axially offset from an input shaft rotationally coupled to the electric motor-generator, where the gear assembly is rotationally coupled to a differential and the differential is rotationally coupled to an axle, a first clutch assembly is configured to rotationally couple and decouple a first gear set from the output shaft, and a second clutch assembly is configured to rotationally couple and decouple a second gear set from the output shaft, the second gear set having a different gear ratio than the first gear set.

When throttle valve opening degree is larger than predetermined throttle valve opening degree Y in the case where a decision on shift to gear stage at which maximum load is applied to predetermined rotary member of automatic transmission is made, the gear stage is not formed. Therefore, large load is restrained from being applied to the predetermined rotary member of the automatic transmission. Besides, gear stage that is lower in vehicle speed than the gear stage by one stage or gear stage that is higher in vehicle speed than the gear stage by one stage is formed depending on whether acceleration requirement is large or small. Therefore, driving torque corresponding to the acceleration requirement is likely to be obtained. In consequence, the load applied to the predetermined rotary member of the automatic transmission can be reduced, and feeling of strangeness can be restrained from being caused by the driving torque.

Method to identify automatic transmission lubrication oil flow rates corresponding to a running vehicle without direct oil flow measurements

A method of determining automatic transmission lubrication fluid flow rates corresponding to a running vehicle without direct oil flow measurements is disclosed. A set of in-vehicle clutch torques for a chosen clutch pack during a gear shift event for a set of shift conditions is obtained. A series of bench tests at various clutch-pack clearances and oil-flow rates for the set of shift conditions are performed. The clearances and oil-flow rates are adjusted in response to the measured magnitudes exceeding thresholds. In-vehicle transmission lubrication oil-flow rates are estimated at the chosen clutch pack for the set of shift conditions when the bench-test and in-vehicle clutch torques are less than the thresholds. The steps are reproduced for other engine conditions and fluid temperatures corresponding to other transmission gear positions. A functional map of in-vehicle oil flow rates are produced, and the transmission is adjusted based on the map.

In an automatic transmission, the control part controls the engaging mechanisms and recognizes the rotational speed of a drive source and a stop request for the drive source. The automatic transmission changes the rotational speed of the input member to transmission gear ratios by the planetary gear mechanism and the engaging mechanisms so as to freely output the rotation from the output member. There is provided an automatic transmission capable to preventing an output of a driving source in a neutral range from being transmitted to wheels without increasing the number of control valves which could fail. The current invention discloses a multi-mode electro-mechanical variable speed transmission. The transmission includes an input shaft, an output system, at least one planetary gear set having at least three branches each represents a co-axial rotating member, two electric machines along with the associated controllers for the electric machines, and at least a clutch. The first branch couples to the first electric machine with a constant speed ratio; the second branch couples to the output system with a constant speed ratio; and the third branch couples to the input shaft with a constant speed ratio; the second electric machine selectively couples to two different the branches of the planetary gear set with two different constant speed ratios, respectively. Said multi-mode electro-mechanical variable speed transmission is capable of providing multiple operation modes including two electric drive modes and two power split operation modes. Different operation modes cover different speed ratio regimes and are suitable for different power requirements. At the mode switching point, the corresponding clutch or clutches is automatically synchronized. This avoids shock loads during operation mode switching. The transmission is capable of providing operations with at least a fixed output to input speed ratio. 1.
