To change the gear ratio, a clamping screw 41 is unscrewed and the yoke pivoted to one side; the casing 26 is then removed and rotated through 180 degrees and reapplied to position gear-wheels 22, 23 on shafts 13, 8 respectively. Alternatively, the casing 26 may be reversed to position gear-wheels 24, 25 on the shafts 8, 13 or vice versa. Other additional casings 26 giving different speed ratios may be used. The gear-wheels may be replaced by sprockets or pulleys interconnected by chains. belts or ropes.

Transmission contains two primary shafts (1) and (2) of different diameters, which are driven by two clutches (3) and (4), intermediate shaft (5) and secondary shaft (6). On shaft (1) of a larger diameter there are freely mounted two gears (7) and (8) that connected with it by gear coupling (9), meshed with gear wheels (10) and (11) that fixed to shaft (5), and fixed gear wheel (12) meshed with gear wheel (13) loosely located on shaft (5) and connected to it gear coupling (14). On shaft (2) of smaller diameter, there is fixed gear wheel (15), that meshed with gear wheel (16), freely disposed on shaft (5) and connected with it by gear coupling (14). On shaft (5) there are fixed gear wheel (17) meshed to gear wheel (18), which is loosely located on shaft (2) and connected to it by gear coupling (19), gear wheel (20) meshed with gear wheel (21) loosely disposed on shaft (6) and connected with it by gear coupling (22). On shaft (5) there is also fixed gear wheel (23), which has a kinematic connection through intermediate pinion (24) with gear wheel (25), freely located on shaft (6) and connected to it by gear coupling (22). A method of operating a transmission device having gears that are engaged by actuating shifting elements. An engagement shaft (53) is in splined engagement (49,55) with the cam member and has an opposite end extending through the gear case and in splined engagement (59,63) with a retarding gear member (61). An actuator (69) includes an actuation member (71) which moves fro a first position (FIG. 1) to an actuated position in response to an external signal (73) to bias the retarding gear into engagement with the gear case, thus retarding rotation of the engagement shaft relative to the gear case, and retarding rotation of the cam means relative to the gear case, to cause engagement of the clutch pack.

Further, the bevel gears 48, 68 are dimensioned so as to be interchangeable for ratio inversion therethrough. A pair of preceding stage pick-off spur gears 35, 50 are splined respectively on an input shaft 23 and a shaft 37. The gears 35, 50 also are interchangeable for ratio inversion therethrough, and may be replaced by a further pair of interchangeable pick-off spur gears 53, 54 stowed on spigots 51, 52 on the inside of a removable cover 17 and acting to prevent the gears 35, 50 from sliding off their respective splines 36, 45. That splined portion of the shaft 37 not mounting the bevel gear 48 mounts a lubricating oil paddle 46a.
