Provided is a method of signalling energy usage to a user of a hot water outlet of a hot water supply system, the hot water supply system including: a thermal energy store that is supplied with energy from a source of renewable energy; a renewable energy source; an auxiliary water heater coupled to a networked energy supply; a flow transducer operable, when a water flow passes through the hot water outlet, to provide flow rate data for the water flow; and a processor coupled to the flow transducer; the hot water supply system being operable, under the control of the processor, to heat water that is to be supplied to the hot water outlet to a target system supply temperature using a selection of one or more of the auxiliary water heater, the renewable energy source, and energy from the thermal energy store; the method comprising: determining that water is flowing through the hot water outlet, and determining a corresponding flow rate; determining the selection required to maintain the target system supply temperature at the flow rate demanded by the user at the outlet; classifying the selection into at least two categories, and/or assigning a graduated scale to the usage; signalling to a remote light source visible in the vicinity of the outlet a colour based on the classification; and heating water using the selection. Also provided is a corresponding hot water supply system.

The control method for a water heating system includes acquiring a recommended heating mode according to electric power information and gas information; in response to the recommended heating mode being a heat-pump heating mode, acquiring an inlet water temperature at an inlet end of the heat-pump heating module; and in response to the inlet water temperature being lower than a preset water temperature, activating the heat-pump heating module. Operation costs of the heat-pump heating module and the gas heating module are compared to acquire the recommended heating mode. If the recommended heating mode is the heat-pump heating mode, the inlet water temperature is compared with the preset water temperature to determine whether an activating condition of the heat-pump heating module is satisfied, thereby improving the economical performance of the water heating system, and avoiding the heat pump from the high-temperature alarm.

A water heating control system has a tank for holding a volume of water heated by a heater and having a hot water outlet and a cold water inlet connected to a main water supply whereby hot water removed from the hot water outlet is replenished with cold water. A temperature sensor provides a temperature signal indicative of water temperature in the tank, and a control unit monitors the water temperature based on the temperature signal and is responsive to selection of a Sabbath mode of operation for periodically actuating and de-actuating the heater while maintaining an average water temperature to less than a permitted preset threshold. In Sabbath mode the control unit closes a shut off valve connected to the water inlet when the heater is actuated and opens the shut off valve when the heater is not actuated.

The present invention relates to a system that allows the temperature of water inlet and outlet tubes in a water cylinder to be measured, making it possible to estimate the energy stored in the device and to estimate the times when the hot water is being used, in addition to allowing user behaviour to be predicted, anomalies in the hot water to be detected, and the power consumption of the device to be optimised. The device comprises: a water cylinder controller (100) disposed on the case; two thermocouple cables (300) for measuring the water inlet and outlet temperature in the cylinder; and an antenna (200) coupled to an antenna connector (12) in order to connect the controller (100) to another server or to the cloud, where the information is processed.

A method is provided for controlling a heating system, wherein the energy consumption being charged based on spot prices, the method comprises: receiving temperature information; maintaining energy consumption information and degree day information of a first time period. The method further comprises receiving spot price information for the energy; defining an energy consumption parameter using the energy consumption information and the degree day information of the first time period; defining degree day information of a day using the temperature information; determining daily heating energy consumption using the energy consumption parameter and the degree day information of a day; determining a heating time needed to achieve the daily heating energy consumption; defining the heating time with a start time and a stop time; and selecting the start time to optimize the heating time taking place during lower spot prices based on the spot price information; and activating a heating source of the heating system based on the selected start time.
