The basis for the function of a linearly concentrating solar collector lies, in simple terms, in the fact that reflectors reflect incident sunlight onto a receiver tube through which a heat-absorbing medium flows. Owing to the rotation of the Earth, the reflectors need to be adjusted regularly, however, in order to ensure that the sunlight hits the receiver tube. Known tracking methods use calculated positions of the sun for this purpose, which, in the case of structural deviations, for example as a result of expansion and material stress, results in inaccuracies and losses in efficiency. The invention is intended to improve the tracking of the reflectors in such a linearly concentrating solar collector. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the radiation intensity in the region on both sides next to the receiver tube is measured and, by means of regulation, in the case of uneven emission on both sides of the receiver tube, the reflectors are tracked to such an extent that the radiation intensity on both sides of the receiver is the same and thus the maximum of the radiation intensity is on the receiver tube.

A snap-on mounting bracket assembly suitable for connecting a mounting rail to a torque tube is provided. The mounting bracket assembly includes an upper clamp piece and a lower clamp piece. The upper clamp piece has a first member defining a tube insertion aperture and an open bottom space and includes an upper partial fastener. The lower clamp piece has a second member with a lower partial fastener configured to mate with the upper partial fastener such that the lower clamp piece is attachable to the upper clamp piece. Solar tracker assemblies incorporating snap-on open mounting brackets are provided. Methods of mounting framed or unframed solar modules are also described. A lower clamp piece of the mounting assembly is then attached to the upper clamp piece by mating a lower partial fastener of the lower clamp piece with an upper partial fastener of the upper clamp piece. Described herein are improved solar tracker systems having variable profiles and related operating methods thereof. Solar-tracking PV systems with variable twisted or aerodynamic profiles offer several advantages including improved wind stability, improved shading characteristics and/or capability to correct system component misalignment. In an embodiment, motor drives (and locking devices if present) of a PV system can be driven against each other to cause a desirable twisted or aerodynamic profile of a torque tube and associated PV modules mounted on the torque tube. The desired twisted or aerodynamic profiles can range from a substantially flat horizontal plate to a twisted helix-like profile and combinations thereof so as to establish improved wind and/or shading characteristics. Advantages can also include a reduction in structural materials, increased structural strength, increased solar energy yield or a combination thereof.

The present invention is an apparatus and method using solar insolation to heat fluid moving through panels, resulting in relatively hot fluid. A set of such panels might be installed in a window. Heat is removed from the hot fluid in a heat reservoir or heat sink, resulting in relatively cool fluid. In some embodiments, the hot fluid and the cool fluid are placed in thermal contact with opposite sides of a thermoelectric generator, thereby generating electricity. In some embodiments, photovoltaic cell modules are embedded in the panels, the fluid system improving the effectiveness of the cells. A given system might use either approach to generate electricity, or both. Heat from the heat reservoir might be used to heat a building. A thermoelectric system might be run in reverse at night.
