A split solid adsorption cooling system is disclosed. The split solid adsorption cooling system includes a first adsorption unit, a second adsorption unit, and a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The first and the second adsorption units are connected to each other via a first pipeline and a second pipeline of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger. While adsorption and desorption take place alternately in the first and the second adsorption units, the temperature of the first and the second pipelines is lowered, thereby decreasing the temperature of water flowing in the shell-and-tube heat exchanger. In addition, the manufacturing costs of the split solid adsorption cooling system can be lowered because the shell-and-tube heat exchanger need not be operated in a vacuum environment. Furthermore, as the shell-and-tube heat exchanger is separate from the first and the second adsorption units, the overall system volume is reduced.

Key applications include thermal management of electronics, as well as industrial and home refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning. The invention offers a simpler, lighter, compact, and robust apparatus compared to magnetocaloric devices of prior art. Furthermore, the invention may be run in reverse as a thermodynamic engine, receiving low-level heat and producing mechanical energy.

The change amounts correspond to the stages on a one-to-one basis. The control unit ( 4 ) increases the operating frequency of the compressor ( 11 ) by corresponding one of the change amounts required for upgrading a present stage of the operating frequency of the compressor ( 11 ) to a stage immediately higher than the present stage every time the temperature of the outdoor heat exchanger ( 15 ) is reduced by a predetermined amount, and reduces the rotation speed of the outdoor fan ( 23 ) in accordance with the change amount.

According to the present invention, an air condition comprises: a first compressor and a second compressor which compress a refrigerant through multiple stages; a condenser which condenses the refrigerant compressed by the second compressor; a first flow channel through which a portion of the refrigerant condensed by the condenser passes, in order to be cooled; a supercooling heat exchanger having a second flow channel for exchanging heat with the first flow channel; an expansion instrument which expands the refrigerant cooled by the supercooling heat exchanger; a shell-tube-type evaporator which evaporates the refrigerant expanded by the expansion instrument, and which is connected to a location requiring cold water via a water pipe to supply cold water to said location requiring cold water; a first bypass channel which guides the refrigerant condensed in the condenser to the second flow channel; a supercooling expander installed in the first bypass channel; and a second bypass channel which interconnects the first and second compressors and the second flow channel, thereby decreasing discharge superheat, and thus increasing the degree of subcooling, and improving the efficiency of supplying cold water.

Methods for cooling fluorescent material are provided. A first method includes providing a sample of the material having an elongated direction of light propagation, exhibiting fluorescence at a mean fluorescence wavelength and capable of emitting superradiant pulses with a formation delay time. The method then involves generating a pump pulsed laser beam having a wavelength longer than the mean fluorescence wavelength, a pump power at which superradiant pulses are emitted and a pulse duration shorter than the formation delay time. The pulses are directed onto the sample along the direction of light propagation to produce the superradiant pulses in an anti-Stokes process inducing a cooling of the sample. A second laser cooling method includes a combination of a traditional anti-Stokes cooling cycle and an upconversion cooling cycle, wherein the two cooling cycles act cooperatively to cool the sample.

A highly efficient condensate-free cooling unit functionally based on vapor-compression refrigeration cycle has been described. The condensate collected from the evaporator of the cooling unit is routed through a sub-cooling heat exchanger where it exchanges heat with the primary heat exchange medium emerging through the condenser of the cooling unit, thus, sub-cooling the primary heat exchange medium to a lower temperature before it enters the expansion valve. Emerging from the sub-cooling heat exchanger, the condensate flows through a condensate outlet pipe into multiple spray nozzles disposed over the condensate outlet pipe. The spray nozzles sprinkle the condensate over the hot air blown into the condenser to reduce its temperature. The cooling unit has a substantially higher coefficient of performance compared to the conventional cooling units utilizing vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, and eliminates the problems of condensate removal persistent in the art.

Technologies are generally described herein for electrocaloric effect heat transfer devices, methods, and systems that may be effective to efficiently transfer and distribute thermal energy from a heat source utilizing coordinated application of out of phase electric signals to adjacent heat transfer stacks coupled with a thermal distribution layer. Some electrocaloric effect heat transfer stacks may include alternating layers of electrocaloric effect material and thermal rectifier material. The out of phase electric signals produce electric fields that bias the electrocaloric effect material of one heat transfer stack to a hot phase, emitting thermal energy, while biasing the electrocaloric effect material of an adjacent heat transfer stack to a cold phase, absorbing thermal energy. The thermal distribution layer allows for thermal energy from the material in the hot phase to be distributed to the material of the adjacent stack in the cold phase rather than back to the heat source.

An air conditioning system for appropriately controlling the air conditioning capacity by preventing occurrence of cavitation of a refrigerant pump and a method of operating the system are provided. It includes an evaporator for vaporizing a refrigerant by exchanging heat with air in a room to be air-conditioned, a condenser for liquefying a refrigerant gas vaporized by the evaporator, a refrigerant pump for feeding a refrigerant liquid liquefied by the condenser to the evaporator, a refrigerant liquid tank disposed between the condenser and the refrigerant pump to temporarily store the refrigerant liquid liquefied by the condenser, first cold water piping for supplying cold water generated from a heat source machine to the condenser, second cold water piping for supplying the cold water generated from the heat source machine to the refrigerant liquid tank, a refrigerant liquid temperature sensor for measuring a temperature of the refrigerant liquid in the refrigerant liquid tank and a control unit for controlling to supply the cold water desired for condensation of the refrigerant gas to the condenser.

The integrated system further includes an AC module configured to deliver a chilled AC coolant to AC loads in the facility. The AC module includes an AC evaporator and an AC compressor. The AC evaporator has an inlet configured to receive CO 2 liquid and an outlet configured to discharge a CO 2 vapor. The AC compressor is arranged in parallel with the one or more CO 2 compressors and is configured to receive CO 2 vapor from both the AC evaporator and the receiver.
