The supplementary cooling elements, with two or more components, may be inserted from the outside of the furnace into holes that pass through and the primary cooling element such that the cooling elements protrude beyond the inner surface of the primary cooling element. An inner one of the components of the supplementary cooling element may be received by an outer one of the components in a manner that forces the outer component into a thermally conductive pressure connection with the primary cooling element.

Thermal protection of shaft furnace walls in smelting - using metal plates attached to cooled tubes

Metal plates having a height to width ratio of 2 to 3:1, which are used for thermal protection of the shells of shaft furnaces for smelting, are made up of individual bars, of which the width exceeds the height. The surfaces of the bars facing the furnace shell are provided with recesses into which U-shaped coolant-conveying tubes are fitted. A thermally conductive material is placed in the recesses to improve heat transfer from the plates to the coolant flowing inside the tubes. Elements are located between the recesses for attaching the bars to the tubes. Further elements are welded to the tubes so that they can be secured to the furnace shell. Differential thermal expansion in the vertical direction can be taken up without developing the material stresses which occur in one-piece plates. The life of the plates is increased and the time between repairs is extended. The probability of dangerous situations arising is reduced.

In accordance with the invention the forced cooling lining element consists of at least three (3) seamless, heavy wall boiler type pipes, arranged in generally parallel, eccentrically spaced non-contacting relation, with circular spacers, neighbouring pipes being interconnected by welded mitres and elbows to create series or series-parallel serpentine and zig-zag structural pattern. The hot face of the pipes is provided with protective refractory anchoring system consisting of multitude coaxially and diagonally to the pipes arranged intermittent protuberances. Positive retaintion of the protective refractory-slag layer is controlled by means of heat extracting liquid coolant, flowing at high velocities and high pressure through the pipes structural pattern. The discharge flow of the liquid coolant such as water is controlled by an automatic flow control device which is an integral and constituent component of the element.

/CHG FUSED CAST BLOCKS BASED ON REFRACTORY OXIDES AND HAVING A STEEL MEMBER EMBEDDED THEREIN Marc ESNOULT and Jean-Claude HUGUES SOCIETE EUROPEENNE DES PRODUITS REFRACTAIRES _____ ____________ ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a fused cast block of a refractory oxide-based material, having, embedded therein, a steel member which extends over the greater part of the length of the block and emerges from the block on the outer face of the latter, said steel member being embedded in the block in the course of molding the latter and having a cross-section of suitable shape and surface area to impart to the composite block an apparent thermal conductivity, at between 500 and 1000°C, of at least 8 kcal.m./m2.°C.hr. The block of the invention is useful in the construction of steelmaking furnaces.

The outer portions 35a of the cooling members remain outside the furnace and may contain water cooled channels 33, or the outer portions may be cooled by natural convection from solid plates (41), Fig. 5 (not shown), or by fins (51), Fig. 7 (not shown). Refractory walls already eroded may be protected by drilling holes into the lining in the affected area and inserting solid coolers (18) Fig. 3 (not shown).

A water-cooled panel for the furnace wall and furnace roof of an electric-arc furnace is integrally fabricated of refractory bricks arrayed on the furnace inner wall in multiple regularly spaced rows to be exposed at the end surfaces and cooling water pipes installed between the rows of refractory bricks ( 2 ). A furnace exterior side of the refractory bricks and a furnace interior side of a cooling water pipe are overlapped in a vertical direction of the water-cooled panel, and the cooling water pipe is provided in between an upper and lower side of refractory bricks.
