The fault signal is fed to a variable gain amplifier which has its gain controlled by the speed responsive signal. The signal produced by the amplifier is then differentiated, shaped, and integrated. The amount by which yarn stretches or shrinks after passing through, for example, a size bath 12, is measured by comparing the number of pulses transmitted to a first decatron counter 19 by a transducer 17 sensing the rotation of a roller 11 with the number of pulses from a second transducer 17 transmitted to a second decatron counter 21 as a roller 13 on to which the yarn 10 is wound after it is passed through the size bath 12 rotates. In the embodiment described the counter 19 counts up to a thousand pulses and then switches a diode in the control box 20 to prevent any further pulses being received by either counter. If the counter 21 has then counted 1,027 pulses it will display 27 to indicate a stretch of 2À7% but if, for example, a count of 965 is given the percentage, shrinkage is obtained by subtracting the indicated figure from one thousand. The counter 21 has three indicator dials which respectively indicate a percentage stretch of from 1% to 1%, 1% to 10% and over 10%.

The instantaneous position of a tape used for recording and reproduction is calculated from constants representing physical characteristics. The speed of transfer of tape from one spool to another is also measured. Pulses are generated proportional to speed or rotation of eachspool in a tape transfer system. High frequency clock pulses are accumulated in registers to determine time of rotation for each spool from the number of pulses generated proportional to speed.
