The float chamber contains a float operably connected to a mechanical alarm. The float, as the chamber is emptied of liquid, reaches a position wherein a "low or empty product" signa l is generated. The apparatus operates by passing liquid through the body. As liquid in the source of liquid is depleted and is no longer available for passage through the body, the body becomes emptied of liquid as the source of pressure removes liquid from the body and particularly from the chamber causing the float to reach a position generating a signal.

The sensor is an inexpensive conductive probe that can be installed in any tank or container used to contain a conductive liquid. The build up of residue such as conductive fluid that fails to drain on the inside of the container wall and probe pieces can cause a short between the probe and ground. This situation will result in falsely showing that the level of the liquid being measured is at least at the minimum predetermined requirement even though the actual level may be far less than that amount. The bias ring is a virtual "ring" that is provided around the insulating base of the sensing probe between the probe tip and the top inside of the tank. The subject of the invention is level sensors for fermenters under a sterile and anaerobic atmosphere. A level sensor according to the invention comprises a hollow annular float 3 which contains a soft steel ring 4 and which slides in a vertical guide tube 5 which is hollow and which contains a rod 8 carrying at its lower end an electromagnetic displacement sensor composed of a transmitting coil 10 and two receiving coils 11a and 11b. The lower end of the tube 5 is blocked and dips into the liquid. The upper end of the rod 8 emerges from the guide tube. It is threaded and it interacts with a threaded ring 7 which allows the electromagnetic sensor to be displaced vertically. One application is the regulation and/or measurement of the level of liquid in a fermenter under a sterile and anaerobic atmosphere.

The trough can comprise a belt scraper and a trough aperture, in which the belt scraper is configured to remove waste attached to the belt. The trough aperture is configured to connect to a drainage tube for draining the waste out of the drum.
