[Class 40 (ii).] A modification of the process described in the parent Specification for making a combined sound-record and colour-picture film consists in varnishing the sound-track after developing, fixing, washing, and drying the printed film, and then applying a coloured-colloid plaster to the whole face of the film. The colouring of the pictures only is effected by subsequent treatment as described in the parent Specification, the black silver sound - record image remaining unchanged. The waterproof varnish may be a cellulose compound, or a resinous or wax solution. The invention is applicable to various kinds of coloured picture films. Specification 417,765 is referred to.

[Class 98 (ii)] A sound track comprises a mixture of silver sulphide and silver iodide in which, measured to infra-red light, at least 25 per cent of the optical density is due to silver sulphide, and at least 25 per cent to silver iodide. The ratio of sulphide to iodide may be such that (1) at least from 30 to 75 per cent of the said density is due to silver sulphide, or (2) at least from 50 to 75 per cent of the said density is due to silver iodide. The record is preferably formed by acting on a silver halide (bromide or chloride) or other silver salt image with a single bath containing a sulphur compound such as sodium sulphide or thiourea, and an alkali metal iodide, and various examples of such baths are given. For producing a track of uniform density, it may be necessary to use a bath nearly saturated with sulphide and iodide. The track may be formed on a black and white picture film, or on a subtractive colour picture film such, for example, as are formed on multilayer or mixed-grain sensitive material, or on material partly multilayer and partly mixed grain, which may contain image forming dyes or dye-forming substances. The bath may be applied to the track area by an edge applicator, or by immersing the edge of the film therein. The sound track exposure may be made at the same time as the picture exposure, and the processing of the track may be performed directly after the negative development, or, especially in cases in which the picture components are processed seriatim, may be delayed until at least two of the picture components have been formed, the sound track area being meanwhile protected by masking. The invention provides a simple process for recording two channel stereo sound on photographic sound film, which is compatible with mono sound, equipment for effecting the process and an adapter for playing the film back. The width of the sound stripe on the film is modulated according to the sound from one channel, while the centre line of the stripe is modulated according to the sound from the other channel. The equipment comprises a light window whose width is determined by two strings arranged side by side in a magnetic field and switched electrically in series. The outer terminals are connected to two resistances switched in series and parallel to the strings. Their junction, as that of the strings, is connected to a modulated power source corresponding to the second channel, so that both strings are moved together.

[Class 98 (ii)] Relates to the manufacture of combined sound and picture films, particularly lenticular films, by a process in which the picture record is developed by the reversal method and the sound record by the usual single development. According to the invention, the part of the light-sensitive layer intended for the soundtrack is covered with a layer of varnish, which is removed before the sound-record is developed, or which is rendered pervious to the developer. The varnish, which may be a solution of benzyl-cellulose in carbon tetrachloride, can be applied before or after exposure of the film. By suitably colouring the varnish, it may be made opaque to the light to which the picture portion of the film is exposed, but transparent to the light used for recording the sound. The back surface of that strip of the film which carries the sound track is also preferably covered with a varnish of the same colour. It may be necessary to dry the film after the first development, in order to remove the varnish before the second development, but to avoid this step the following procedure may be adopted. The sound track is printed before development of the pictures is begun. After the first development and bleaching of the pictures, the film is treated in a bath, (e.g. potassium hydroxide), which saponifies the layer of varnish protecting the sound-track, and thus renders it pervious to liquid, The second development, which affects the pictures and sound-track simultaneously, is then carried out.

[Class 40 (ii).] In order to avoid abrupt changes in the volume of sound reproduced from a film record when the reproduction is to be brought to an end, or when a transition occurs from one portion of a record to another on the same film, the negative is treated with a chemical reducing agent, such as Farmer's reducer, at the portions where the change is required. The Figure shows a combined sound and picture negative, having a portion 5 of the sound record of normal density. By suitable treatment with a reducer, the density is progressively decreased from the portion 6 until at the part 7 the film is practically clear. The pictures adjacent to the " faded " record may be correspondingly reduced.

[Class 98 (ii)] A method of reproducing a sound-track consists of foiming a photographic relief image of the sound, treating it with an organic compound which will reduce silver salts or silver oxide, transferring the relief image of the organic compound to a mordanted imbibition blank and reacting it with a silver salt or silver oxide to form a silver sound image at the points of transfer. Hematoxylin, gallein or gallin are the preferred organic reducers, but hydroxy-flavones, e.g. quercetin and quercitrin, tannins, tannic acid, gallic acid, alizarin dyes; poly-hydroxy anthraquinones, e.g. anthragallol, or reducing aldehydes, are also mentioned. In one example, a cellulose ester support carrying an unhardened gelatine-silver halide emulsion layer suitable for forming a relief image, is exposed to a colour separation negative carrying the sound image, the image portions hardened and the unhardened gelatin washed out. The film is dyed with the minus colour and treated on the sound-track by means of a roller or by edge dipping, with a solution of an organic compound, e.g. hematoxylin. The film is pressed on to a chrome alum mordanted gelatin blank and the blank then treated for five seconds in a 5 per cent solution of sodium bisulphite, rinsed and placed in ammoniacal silver nitrate solution. The sound image is neutral gray. In further examples, the gelatin blank is further mordanted with sodium hydroxide and cupric chloride, followed if necessary by treatment in a 1 per cent solution of sodium perborate. Other suitable mordants are compounds of aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, zirconium, tin, lead, zinc, cadmium, antimony, manganese, bismuth, uranium, tungsten, molybdenum, thorium, vanadium and cerium.
