The device comprises first and second flat guide members which are adapted to be positioned on the film halftone or diffusion transfer print. The first flat guide member comprises an elongated base portion and an elongated leg portion extending from one end of the base portion at a right angle thereto. The base and leg portions have inner guide edges formed thereon. The second flat guide member comprises an elongated base portion and an elongated leg portion extending from one end of the base portion at a right angle thereto. The base and leg portions of the second guide member have outer guide edges complementary to the inner guide edges of the first guide member. The base and leg portions of the second guide member also have inner guide edges provided thereon. The two guide members are used together to either rule or cut four perfect 90 DEG rules or cuts on four sides of the film halftone or diffusion transfer print.

The different size pictures are both one behind the other and mutually adjacent. A unit (3-5,7-9) provides cuts transverse to longitudinal edges of the paper strip in its transport sense, and is located in front of the other unit (34-37) for cuts parallel to the strip longitudinal edges. A method of stripping films which are stuck together without damage is disclosed. The whole reel of films which are stuck together is placed in a sealing device with outlet valves. Liquid nitrogen is added at a bottom of the sealing device. The films are stripped off by a flow of gas through gaps between the layers of the films while the vaporization of liquid nitrogen. The present invention adopts a natural force of liquid nitrogen vaporization to strip the films, which does not compromise the PH value, the dimensional performance and the mechanical performance of the films. The films are in stripped off without damage. The conventional method of stripping the films causes the fragile film to break off or the image layer with a decreased combing power to detach. The present invention has the advantages of simple operation, low cost and good promotion value.

Rectangular drawings of standard dimensions or formats can be automatically cut out of a continuous paper or plastic web (1) by a transverse cutter (9) and a plurality of longitudinal cutters (26), as directed by coding (20) on the edge of the web. The cut-off strips (23) of scrap made by transverse cutter (9) are directed away by a movable deflector (13). Additional deflectors (62) are provided downstream, in web motion direction D, of the longitudinal cutters (26) and serve to separate the scraps (23, 25) produced by the longitudinal cutters from the drawing forms (A0-A4) which have been trimmed on all four sides. Thus, manual separation of the drawings from the surrounding scrap is obviated.

Presses.-A device for joining kinematograph films comprises a table 1, shown in plan, recessed at 2 to accommodate overlapping films which are positioned by pins 3, a roller 4 carried by an arm 5 adapted to be swung about a vertical pivot 6, and a clamping-plate 12 to hold the ends of the films while the cement is drying. Stops 8 limit the movement of the roller 4 which, in the position shown, serves to hold one film while the other is being adjusted. The clamping-plate 12 is connected to a lever 10 by pins 14 and is controlled by a spring 17. The lever 10 is frictionally secured to a bar 11 having reduced ends 18 which serve as pivots and are clamped in uprights 19. A spring arranged beneath the table is connected by a rod to the lever 10 so as to tend to keep this raised. When the lever 10 is depressed it is kept down by a catch 26, which is released automatically by the arm 5 when this is swung to remove the roller from the film.

A tape dispenser for a film splicer has a two part cassette holding two reels of transparent splicing tape on backing paper. The two tapes feed at converging angles to the top and bottom of the film with the backing paper stripped off by bending it around acute angles and pulling the backing out of the rear of the cassette. The stripped tape is offered to the top and bottom of the film at the correct angle and an automatic cutter trims off the required length. The cassette locates in the splicer and requires no manual dexterity to apply to the film.

Short sections of adhesive tape are applied to a film travelling on a drum 70 from an intermittently rotating drum 51, predetermined lengths of tape being cut and then transferred from the drum 51 to the drum 70 by a cam-operated arm 31 moving at right angles to the plane of rotation of the drum 51. Tape with one adhesive layer is supplied to the drum 51 with the adhesive layer outermost, the drum 51 having axially extending arms 52 with studs 55 for retaining the tape. The tape is cut by a disc, Fig. 5 (not shown), with a cutting edge, moved axially across the drum surface in either direction by twin rods controlled by a double-acting cylinder. The transfer arm 31 is rotatably held in the arms of an H-section rotating drum 25 and is operated by a cam follower in a track, Fig. 1 (not shown), so that the arm 31 protrudes from the drum 25 at the side facing drum 51, and passes between adjacent arms 52 of drum 51, picking up the tape length by suction ; the drum .25 rotates causing arm 31 to retract inside the drum 25 flush with the drum surface at the opposite side, adjacent to the drum 70, whereby the tape length is applied to the film on the drum 70. For each rotation of the drum 25, the drum 51 is indexed by a Geneva mechanism 41 one-arm sector, and the cutter is reciprocated independently.

Splicing apparatus for splicing strip material comprises a splicing stage having a longitudinally extended groove therein adapted to holdingly receive the two ends of the strip material to be spliced. The stage is provided with a moveable cutting block, which in a first position has its upper surface flush with the operative surface of the stage. The cutting block is provided with a mating groove forming a continuation of the groove on the stationary portion of the stage. Means are provided for lifting the cutting block to a second position in which parallel cutting edges on the lower surface of said cutting block at opposite edges thereof are in raised position and adapted to receive the non-mating strip ends thereunder. As the block is returned to its flush position strip edges are simultaneously severed to form accurately mated edges on said strip ends whereupon said groove on said cutting block into substantially contiguous abutting relationship for splicing. In accordance with the method of the present invention the above is carried out in substantially one continuous movement.

The two film ends to be spliced are positioned on a table which is slid sideways into the splicing machine. The table engages drive wheels for cutters which trim off the film end ends to form a neat butt finish. Splicing tape sections are providing attached to a waxed paper reel which is threaded over rollers, with two rollers arranged so that tape sections are pressed against either side of the film join as the table is pushed further into the machine. The tape and rollers are arranged so that alternate tape sections are applied from each side. The whole system operates in one controlled movement with little skill required by the operator.

The invention relates to an apparatus for processing film, having a base part, which receives a spindle on an upward-projecting support, a lever-like knife support mounted on the spindle which has, at the end remote from the spindle, an end edge curved concentrically with the latter, a cutting knife, interchangeably attached to the knife support, whose blade projects beyond the end edge, and a supporting bed for the film, formed on the base part, which is likewise curved concentrically with the spindle and extends parallel thereto at a distance such that, when the knife support is rotated about the spindle in the working direction of rotation, the end edge of the knife support passes over the film resting on the supporting bed and the blade of the cutting knife shaves a strip of material of the desired thickness from the film. The object of the invention is to design an apparatus of the generic type explained initially in such a manner that easier operation and precise maintenance of the desired removal depth are guaranteed without the danger of damage to the film. This object is achieved in that a film depressor is arranged upstream of the cutting knife on the knife support in the working direction of rotation, projects beyond the end edge under spring loading, and presses the film against the supporting bed immediately upstream of the knife cut. <IMAGE>

As the original cuts the beam 18 the photo-cell, or bank or photo-cells 20 register (a) the width and front and rear edges of the original, thus determining the length and width of copying material required; (b) the transparency of the original, to determine the copying speed; and (c) the positioning of the lateral edges of the original to determine any lateral displacement of the copying material required. The present invention relates to a patch which is easily applied to motion picture film, a jig and a method for using the same. The patch may act as a splice to connect two lengths of film which require repair or which must be joined together to produce a complete presentation. The patch may also be applied along a predetermined position of the film to carry control information which may be used to control the sequence of events in a movie theater. In some applications, the patch may serve both a splicing as well as an information-carrying function. A method and apparatus for determining whether a predetermined cut position lies within an unexposed portion of a roll of film is provided. A first density sensor 20 senses film density of a roll of film (10) and produces film density data. The film density data is stored in a first data storage device (50). A counter (66) counts pulses produced by a film drive and, when a predetermined number of pulses has been counted, indicating the arrival of the film at the predetermined cut position, the counter (66) produces a control signal that causes a comparator (26) to compare the base density data to the cut position density data. The comparator (26) produces a cutter control signal that causes a film cutter to cut the film (10) at the predetermined cut position only when the value of the cut position density data indicates that the film density at the cut position is within a predetermined range of the base density. In a typical installation, the film is comprised of several rolls of film spliced together. The invention includes a first splice detector (54) that detects a splice at a first time and a second splice detector (56) that detects the splice at a second subsequent time to identify each roll of film. The base density information is then keyed to a particular roll of film.

The film strip ends are held down by a pressure lever while a ratchet secures the down position. A peg (3) locates the sprocket holes of the adjacent strips and holds the film for taping. As the pressure lever is lifted the peg drops out of the sprocket holes and leaves the film free for removal. The peg is operated by a sloping cam surface linked to the pressure lever action. It prevents the film from snagging, as there is no film tension to remove the film during and after splicing. The slicer is manually controlled and provides a simple, low cost equipment.

The film is placed onto a platform, with the ends butted together. The tape is placed face up on a separate platform, with the protective paper tags looped over special hooks on either side. These hooks stretch the tape, and when the splicer lever is lifted, then pull off the protective paper and leave the tape flat, and undamaged on the lever, which then transfer it over onto the film. The hooks may have one of several barbs and the semi-automatic nature of the operation leads to better quality splicing.

The coupling 48 is provided on a driving- shaft 45 and the coupling 54 on a knife shaft 55 driven from the shaft 45 through a chain drive 53. The roller 15 is provided with a brake 51 on roller shaft 46 which is driven from the shaft 45 through gearing 49, 50. The contact arrangement is provided with a switch 61 operable by a cam 60 on the knife shaft, the switch being adapted, when the knife reaches its idle position, to switch back to advance the web. The coupling 54 may also be controlled by the contact arrangement.

A method is described for splicing together overlapping ends of first and second lengths of photographic film strips of common film strip width, comprising positioning a bonding element between an overlapping end of the first length of photographic film and a corresponding overlapped end of the second length of photographic film, and heating the bonding element to effect an adhesive bond between such film ends, wherein the bonding element comprises an induction heating receptive support and thermoplastic adhesive layers on each side of the support, and wherein the heating of the bonding element is performed by induction heating. The present invention allows for the preparation of photographic film splices, consisting of either homogeneous or dissimilar film bases, using a bonding element and induction heating to provide smooth yet strong splices. In particular, the invention enables successful splicing of acetate support (e.g., cellulose triacetate (CTA)) based films and polyester support (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) based films either to themselves or each other. The invention provides a method of forming composite rolls of motion picture film containing different film bases as well as eliminating the need for emulsion skiving, and the use of toxic, flammable film cements when splicing CTA films.

Apparatus for splicing successive exposed photographic films end-to-end by means of uniting bands one side of which is coated with hotmelt has a ribbon which is severed at regular intervals at the splicing station to yield a succession of uniting bands. Each band is caused to overlie the ends of films at the splicing station and is thereupon pressed against the films by two heated rams which move toward each other as soon as a fresh band is separated from the ribbon. The ribbon is retracted from the splicing station immediately upon severing to avoid the flow of hotmelt thereon as a result of heating action of the rams.

A method of splicing together leading and following webs which are delivered successively. In the splicing method, when the leading and following webs are different in shape or material from each other, there is interposed between the leading and following webs a dummy web for increasing the strength of splicing of the webs. Also, when the leading and following webs are welded and spliced togethr, the two webs are in part lapped on each other and the lapped portions thereof are cut inclined with respect to the width direction of the webs. After waste materials produced from the cutting are removed, the ends of the webs are butted against each other or slightly lapped on each other and are then welded together. A welded and spliced portion, which includes a fusion portion and a recrystallized portion produced due to heat during welding, is formed such that a difference between the web thickness of the recrystallized portion and the thickness of the adjoining portions of the recrystallized portion is within ±30%.

Movement of an operating lever 17 in the direction A, Fig. 1, elevates a tape-knife assembly 4 to a 45 degrees position relative to the length of the tape 2, advances supports 34, 35 to raise the tape clear of the record/playback head 1, holds the tape against the side face 8, Fig. 2, of the assembly 4, winds up a spring 15 and then releases a blade 5, slidable in a slot 9 in the assembly 4 to cut the tape 2. The linkage 20-23-swings a pin 24, Fig. 3, to the left and the pin, acting in the slot 26 elevates the knife assembly from its rest position (solid lines) to its working position (dotted lines and Figs. 1, 2) and moves a member 16, attached to the spring 15 down a guide tube 7 away from the knife-holder 6, latched by a sear 29. The final rotation of the assembly, engages trigger 32 with a support member 33 to release the knife. The blade 5 is arranged with its cutting edge obtusely to the cut, to prevent trapping the tape against the side 8 of the tube 7 and the stroke is limited by a pin 40. A spring 39 returns all members to their initial positions in readiness for the next cut.

Method for splicing web end portions with plastic rivets

Web end portions are spliced together with plastic rivets formed from a soft pliable plastic. To form a splice, a patch of thermoplastic having the property of expanding when subjected to heat and pressure such as chlorinated polyethylene material, is placed on a splicing base. A pair of web end portions to be spliced together are placed in abutting or overlapped relation on the platic material to form a web-patch sandwich. A platen having an opening in register with the patch is brought into pressure engagement with the web-patch sandwich to form a pressurized plastic bubble extending into the opening. A heated pin of substantially the same configuration as the opening is moved therethrough for confining the opening and inserting a necked down head at the end thereof into the plastic in the bubble. The combination of heat, pressure and gas formation within the thermoplastic causes the visco-elastic plastic to expand through the opening in the web formed by the pinhead to fill the confined opening and form a plastic rivet head on the surface of the web opposite the patch.
