The drive circuit shown in Fig. 3 receives at input 10 a squarewave 10a derived from the timing circuitry and which is also applied to the display common electrode. The voltage 10a passes, via inverter 14, to exclusive OR gates 19, 20. A ratio control voltage 11a, e.g. of half the frequency of 10a, is fed to input 11 and thus to AND gates 17, 18. Display segment control signals 12a, 13a are fed to inputs 12, 13 to control the AND gates. Fig. 4 shows the AND gate outputs 17a, 18a for a high input to 12 and a low input to 13. After a predetermined transition period, the written and erased electrode-segments are stabilized at a desired coloration or transparency, respectively, by application of a maintaining write potential and a maintaining erase potential. The maintaining potentials are at a lower level than the respective transition potentials. In this manner, the write and erase charges or potentials on the electrode-segments are substantially maintained at a desired level to maintain the desired contrast ratio between the written and erased electrode-segment.

A display device incorporating an electrochromic display cell is provided with means whereby each segment electrode of the electrochromic display cell can be set into a completely electrically isolated state after a condition of coloration of a corresponding display element has been established. Since no leakage current is permitted to flow between the segment electrode and the drive transistors coupled thereto, a charge is stored on the segment electrode which maintains the coloration condition over a considerably longer period of time than has been possible hitherto, thus enabling an electrochromic display device to be realized having a very low level of power consumption.

The light modulation layer is a polymer network type polymer scattered liquid crystal layer or a phase conversion type liquid crystal layer, and the color separation mirror is a cholesteric liquid crystal polymer layer or a dielectric multi-layered thin film characterized to reflect a light within a predetermined wavelength range in the visible light region selectively. A reflection preventing layer and an ultraviolet ray cut-off layer are further arranged on the surfaces of the electrode faces.

An electrochromic display cell has several electrode segments 1 spaced from a common counter-electrode 3 by an electrolyte 2 and disposed to represent different symbols according to those segments on which a coloured or effaced state is conferred by application of a current in one direction or in the other between the segments and the counter-electrode. To achieve one of the current directions a bias voltage provided by a generator 16 is applied for a fixed time by a switching circuit T1, T2 to a field-effect transistor T6 which completes a circuit through the cell 4, electrode 3, electrolyte 2 and segment 1. The transistors 6 have channel widths proportional to the segment areas so that all segments receive the same charge per unit area. The segments whose state is to change in the other direction are short-circuited with the counter-electrode by transistors T7. The display is particularly useful for the display of time data on watches.

Abstract A driving circuit for an electrochromic display cell wherein write and erase of a segment is effected by an alternating or pulse signal. A write or erase potential is applied across a segment and common electrode during a half cycle of the alternating/pulse signal which is predetermined to have a (activation) period less than that which is required to effect complete coloring or bleaching of the segment. Therefore, several cycles of the alternating/pulse signal are necessary to effect complete coloring or bleaching of the segment. The electro-chromic display is caused to have the appearance of simultaneous writing and erasing of a plurality of segments by applying a write or erase potential to the selected segments during each alternate half cycle of the alternating/pulse signal. For example, the write potential is applied to one segment during the first half cycle and the erase potential is applied to another segment during the second half cycle of one alternating/pulse signal. In this manner, gradual fade-in and fade-out of those segments being updated is effected over a several cycle period.

A reflection type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is constructed to include: a light modulation layer having a light scattering state changed when a voltage is applied between electrode faces; at least one kind of color separation layer arranged at the back of the liquid crystal; and a reflection layer arranged at the back of the color separation layer. The light modulation layer is a polymer network type polymer scattered liquid crystal layer or a phase conversion type liquid crystal layer, and the color separation mirror is a cholesteric liquid crystal polymer layer or a dielectric multi-layered thin film characterised to reflect a light within a predetermined wavelength range in the visible light region selectively. A reflection preventing layer and an ultraviolet ray cut-off layer are further arranged on the surfaces of the electrode faces.

1521814 Electronic timepieces TIMEX CORP 10 May 1976 [2 Sept 1975] 19199/76 Heading G3T [Also in Division G5] In an electrochromic display cell 8, e.g. in a figureof-eight array in an electronic timepiece, simultaneous fade-in and fade-out without the ambiguities of 'erase before write' and vice-versa is provided by a squarewave drive voltage Ï, alternating between two levels, supplied to a counter electrode 10 common to all segments, the segment electrodes of those to be written being connected to the opposite level only during the 'write' half cycle, while the segment electrodes of those to be erased are connected to the level opposite to the supply only during the 'erase' half-cycle. In their inactive half-cycles the segment electrode potentials float, leaving the 'write' electrodes at a mean negative voltage and the 'erase' electrodes at a mean positive voltage relative to the counter electrodes. The frequency is chosen so that only a fraction of the write or erase process takes place in one cycle, giving apparent smooth fade-in and fade-out. Each segment electrode is connected to the write (low) and erase (high) levels by switches 12, 14, closed by AND gates 16, 17 when the respective supply wave 0 or its inverse # is high and a command high signal is received on inputs 19, 21. In a timepiece circuit, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), a decoder is provided for each segment of the arrays, driven by hours, minutes, month and date counters, providing logic signals to 'write' and 'erase' AND gates of those segments to be changed, via a flip-flop memory. A 'refresh' input is provided for maintaining contrast by occasional pulses, and to by-pass the flip-flop during manual adjustment.

The display device and the electronic timepiece includes a polarizer, a liquid crystal panel, and a polarization separating film. The polarization separating film transmits linearly polarized light oriented in a certain direction and reflects all other linearly polarized light. The surface of the polarization separating film which opposes the liquid crystal panel, is formed into a smooth surface which specularly reflects light, and a light-scattering layer is not provided therebetween. Light, reflected from the polarization separating film, is used to produce a glossy silver background color or information display with a metallic tone in order to give the display a quality appearance.

An electrochromic display cell has several electrode segments 1 spaced from a common counter-electrode 3 by an electrolyte 2 and disposed to represent different symbols according to those segments on which a coloured or effaced state is conferred by application of a current in one direction or in the other between the segments and the counter-electrode. To achieve one of the current directions a bias voltage provided by a generator 16 is applied for a fixed time by a switching circuit T1, T2 to a field-effect transistor T6 which completes a circuit through the cell 4, electrode 3, electrolyte 2 and segment 1. The transistors 6 have channel widths proportional to the segment areas so that all segments receive the same charge per unit area. The segments whose state is to change in the other direction are short-circuited with the counter-electrode by transistors T7. The display is particularly useful for the display of time data on watches.

In an electronic timepiece provided with an electrochromic display device, temperature monitor circuit means are provided for periodically sampling the ambient operating temperature of the timepiece, to detect if that temperature is above an upper limit temperature. If that is detected, then a control circuit causes the display drive circuit of the timepiece to be inhibited from applying new write drive signals to the electrochromic display device, i.e. signals for setting display elements into the colored state. As a result, reduction of the operating lifetime of the electrochromic display device due to write-in operations being performed thereon under high temperature conditions is prevented.
