ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A printing system adapted for creating hard copy output from computes generated digital pulses. This system feeds blank or preprinted paper from a paper supply station through a xerographic processor wherein readable computer generated images are created thereon. The information bear-ing paper is then transported to a paper receiving station which comprises one or more paper receiving bins. Alterna-tively, an auxiliary feed path for the output paper is created to direct pages, under certain circumstances, to a sample print tray. Paper deflecting fingers axe provided to divest pages to the sample print tray under the control of the operator in response to one of four conditions. These conditions include: (a) The feeding of a sample page through the processor when power is first applied to the machine after the machine has been in a powerless state, or (b) After a jam in the system has been cleased and it is desired to abort pages which have not been removed from the paper path. An this mode, the system may also cause the feeding of a sample page through the pro-cessor and direct it to the sample print tray, or (c) Any time during the normal operating cycle of the machine when a supple-mental copy or a sample page is desired to be made to check the copy quality being produced by the system, or (d) When it is desired to print the contents of specified controller memory locations for diagnostic troubleshooting purposes.

A method for providing color correction to a color marking engine for halftone and contone images includes the step of first generating a test pattern. This test pattern has a plurality of discrete images disposed thereon with the discrete images having characteristics that are correlated with parameters of the print job. In one mode, they relate to halftone images that have differing densities of dots, each less than 100% density. The images are correlated to different bit values for the same densities such that the maximum density value for the pixel is offset for different images. A user then views the different images and determine which one is closest to a true gray and then selects the offset bit value for that image as the marking engine offset. This can then be applied to that particular marking engine. This can be utilized for a plurality of marking engines ( 651 ) with a single RIP ( 650 ). For dot linearization, the images will have different bit density values such that a curve can be made for actual verses requested density. A linearization curve can be defined for each of the plurality of the marking engines ( 650 ) in a versatile engine and then these linearization curves averaged. This averaged linearization curve is then applied to the RIP ( 650 ).

High-precision registration of an image is enabled in a high speed and high quality color printer. A print control part carries out trial printing in double-sided printing. Images of both sides of the trial printing read by a scanner or the like are respectively compared with original images in an image analysis part, and deformations occurring in output images of both sides are analyzed. From this analysis result, a correction data generation part generates correction data, for both sides of a sheet, indicating a correction processing to be added to an input image to remove deformation occurring in an output image. An image correction part changes the correction data to be used according to which side of the sheet the input image is printed on, and corrects the input image. The print control part prints a corrected image.

A correction factor is then calculated responsive to the printed image scan and the print command.
