Inkjet printing with uniform wear of ink ejection elements and nozzles

Номер: GB0002302065A
Принадлежит:

In one embodiment of the invention, an inkjet printer selectively energizes ink ejection elements in a scanning printhead such that the top nozzles of the printhead do not always print the first line of text in a scan. In one embodiment, this is accomplished by occasionally aligning the bottommost nozzle in the printhead with the bottom of the last full line of text to be printed during the scan. The alignment of the printhead with respect to the lines of text to be printed is varied from page to page or varied at other intervals so that the top nozzles and bottom nozzles are used about equally. This will also cause more uniform wear of the middle nozzles. The more uniform wearing of the nozzles and ink ejection elements extends the life of the printhead. In inkjet printers using a black ink printhead which has a wider printing swath than one or more color ink printheads in the same scanning carriage, a new printing technique makes use of the nozzles in the wider printhead which extend ...

Systems and methods of marking control achieve improved image quality in a multipass marking process by taking into account positioning errors that have already occurred in prior marking passes while building the image, and compensates for them in real-time by modifying the remaining interlace locations of the marking subsystem in order to minimize predicted image quality defect perception in the resultant image. The adjustment are preferably based on minimizing a defect perceivability metric. One such suitable metric is a frequency metric, preferably the power spectral density of the resultant image evaluated at the fundamental frequency (1/D), where D represents the spacing of marking devices, such as the spacing of print head nozzles.

In order to print a unit area of a print medium by a first printing scan and a second printing scan, dither patterns are formed which can control the arrangement of dots on the print medium without adverse effects of density unevenness and graininess, that are caused by printing position displacement. Regarding first and second dither patterns, information indicating whether or not a threshold is already set to a reference pixel and one or more pixels around the reference pixel in the first dither pattern is obtained for cases where each pixel in the first dither pattern is the reference pixel. A pixel in the second dither pattern to which a predetermined pixel is to be set is determined based on the obtained information. The first and second dither patterns formed in the above manner are associated with the first printing scan and the second printing scan, respectively.

Printing on an area of a printing medium in which printing locations may be significantly deviated due to inaccurate feeding of the printing medium can be performed, without degrading image quality. Specifically, when lines in this area (second area) are printed using four scanning operations (passes) of a print head, a duty in masking process is set at zero for the scanning operation (pass A) after a change-line operation for feeding the printing medium with a possible large shift feeding error, and is distributed to other scanning operations. Thus, no dots are formed during this scanning operation (pass A), thereby preventing significantly deviated dots from being formed.

A dither pattern is formed in such a manner that threshold values 1 to 16 are dispersed in regard to the order of magnitudes of the threshold values. First, there is made a calculation of multiplying each value of the image data by a ratio of 1/2. Thereby, there is produced the divided 17-valued data where every value of all pixels is "2". Next, binarization is carried out for the divided data by using the dither pattern. As a result, binary data at the first pass is obtained. Next, there is obtained the data by a product of a ratio (1/2+1/2) obtained by adding 1/2 to the above ratio and each value of the image data. Binarization is carried out for the image data by using the dither pattern. This produces binary data. Finally, dot data for the second pass is obtained by subtracting data from the binary data.

Reduction of periodic artifacts in incremental printing

Номер: EP0000944024A2

Periodic inking artifacts are reduced by randomness (82) introduced into an image-processing stage (73). Preferably a superpixel (87) is selected, essentially at random, from a plurality of superpixels (84) - at least for points with an intermediate tonal level, which is the part of the tonal range where dot-placement error is most conspicuous. If image scaling (78) or some other reason for using superpixels (and starting with a coarse grid) is not present, the randomness introduction approach preferably includes preparing (86) the image (71) using a pixel grid that is coarser than the available printer resolution. The selected superpixel (87) is applied at the coarser grid to define a set of individual pixels at printer resolution. A major preference relates to printing in sequential printing passes: a printmasking stage downstream and distinct from the image-processing stage, is used to establish temporal assignments of inking into the plural passes. Color inkdrops form on a print medium in at least partly overlapping swaths. Apparatus holds and provides--or generates in real time--data defining a generally randomized printmask, which is applied to control working parts of an inkjet printer. Preferably the apparatus establishes an elemental pixel subgrid of rows and columns, used in determining inking patterns essentially throughout the image; and stores in the pixel subgrid a previously generated, generally randomized selection of pixel columns for printing of an inkdrop, in each subgrid pixel row--and conversely an analogous selection of pixel rows for printing a drop in each subgrid pixel column. Also preferably the generally randomized selection is subjected to location rules as to pixels above and to at least one side of each pixel. Numerous specific masks are specified as pass-number patterns, including an eight-by-eight "knight" array, two sixteen-by-five arrays, a sixteen-by-ten array, and several four-by-four arrays. Techniques are disclosed for depleting raster data to allow printing of the depleted raster data on a grid that corresponds to the resolution of the undepleted raster data with a printed dot size that is larger that would otherwise be utilized with the undepleted raster data and to achieve faster ink dry time. Also disclosed is a technique for up scaling raster data at a particular resolution (e.g., 300 dpi) to a higher resolution in such a manner that expanded data includes a greater number of dot producing pixels to compensate for a dot size that is larger than the dot size that is appropriate for the higher resolution, and does not require horizontal depletion for printing with such dot size. This allows raster data at a particular resolution to be combined with higher resolution rasterized vector data for printing in accordance with the enhanced mode of operation.

Номер: US8610955B2

In image processing, it is possible to suitably reduce density unevenness and graininess according to the ink used in printing. More specifically, when dividing multi-valued data and generating data for 2-pass multi-pass printing, in addition to divided multi-valued data for each of the two passes, divided multi-valued data that is common to the two passes is also generated. Moreover, quantized data of that common multi-valued data is reflected on the quantized data for each of the passes. Furthermore, when generating the quantized data, the division ratios used when generating the common data using the aforementioned multi-valued data division are set according to the colors of ink used in printing. By doing so, it becomes possible to suitably reduce density unevenness and graininess according to the colors used in printing.

A test pattern is printed using the nozzles of adjacent jetting modules, and the pattern is analyzed to detect a stitch error in the overlap regions. The results of this analysis is used to calculate a set of correction values to be applied to print data subsequently sent to nozzles of the adjacent jetting modules to make a correction for the stitch error. During a subsequent production run, the print data sent to the nozzles of the adjacent jetting modules is analyzed to sense an image content attribute. These results of the analysis of the print data is then used to calculate a dynamic adjustment that is used to adjust the set of correction values calculated during the set up procedure. The line head is then used to print the corrected print data by applying the set of adjusted correction values to production print data subsequently sent to the jetting modules.

Hybrid printmask for multidrop inkjet printer

Номер: US6536869B1

A swath printer and multipass printing method for improving print quality. The printer minimizes dot placement errors on a printed medium due to depositing drops of ink from lower quality printhead nozzles by providing a printmask having a mask pattern which prints with those nozzles most susceptible to dot placement error using a hi-fipe printmode which deposits into a specific pixel location a small number of drops in each of multiple passes, and a multidrop printmode which deposits into a specific pixel location many drops rapidly in one of the passes. Because such a printer and method prints substantially equally with all printhead nozzles, it does not shorten the useful life of the printhead due to defects associated with the number of times a nozzle deposits ink.

After an ink-jet recording head (1) with a plurality of discharging portions (Nos. 1-128) arranged is main-scanned in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the discharging portion arrangement to record a first image area, sub-scanning of the head is performed. Before the head is main-scanned to record a second image area, the sub-scanning is performed so that a few discharging portions (Nos. 1-3) on an upper edge portion of the head (1) in second main-scanning overlap part of the first image area. Ink droplets land on pixels in the overlapping portion twice for each main-scanning, and image density of the pixels in the overlapping portion is controlled by the sum number of the landing ink droplets. This enables image density unevenness of image density, a "black stripe banding" or a "white stripe banding" in a boundary of an image area being recorded in each main-scanning to be markedly reduced.

Ink jet print quality is improved and higher pen speed permitted by a bidirectional printing protocol. According to the new protocol, each individual character to be printed is first partitioned into a leading portion and a trailing portion. The trailing portion includes all trailing edge bits. Only the leading portion is printed on a forward pass of the ink jet pen. The trailing portion is printed on a reverse pass of the pen, so that trailing edge ink drops are instead printed as leading edge ink drops. As a result, satellite ink drops are directed toward the center of the character, where they are covered by primary ink drops, thereby minimizing character edge roughness associated with exposed satellite ink drops.

Specifically, in the binarization process, an error diffusion process is performed on the divided data D8c / 2 of C, and the binary (dot) data D2c1 for the first pass of C is obtained. Next, the binarization process is performed on M divided data D8m / 2. At this time, correction is performed to add a term that is Kc1m1 (D8c / 2-D2c1) to M divided data D8m / 2. Then, an error diffusion process is performed on the corrected data [D8m / 2 + Kc1m1 (D8c / 2-D2c1)] to obtain dot data D2m1 for M's first pass. In this manner, in the generation of each plane, correction is performed to reflect the result of the binarization processing of each plane processed up to that time, and error diffusion processing is performed on the corrected data.
