An optical aberration is intentionally introduced into the optical system which produces the scanning beam of an optical code scanner, in order to produce a scanning beam which has plural focal points or waists at different distances from the scanner. The operating range of the scanner can thereby be increased by taking advantage of different beam waist locations when the optical code is at different distances from the scanner. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, coma is intentionally introduced to an optical system providing a light beam for an optical code scanner. This provides a scanning beam with plural beam waists at different distances from the scanner. This may be accomplished by orienting the light source and focusing optical system so that their optical axes intersect or by introducing an optical member, such as a prism, between the original light source and the focusing optical system.

A method and ultra-compact system has been developed for illuminating and detecting the surface topography of an object such as the finger of an individual. The system is capable of producing high-contrast images which can be electronically transmitted in real-time, or stored using electronic or photographic recording devices. Light traveling within a light transmitting substrate is redirected by a slanted-fringe light diffractive grating preferably embodied within a volume hologram. The volume hologram, either of the reflection or transmission type, is attached to the light transmitting substrate, and functions to diffract light striking thereupon and illuminate an object having topographical surface structure. After being spatially and intensity modulated in accordance with topographical details of the illuminated object, the modulated light passes back through the light transmitting substrate and the volume hologram, onto an image detection array, for subsequent analysis. Each of the disclosed embodiments has a compact geometry suitable for use in diverse object identification applications.

Illumination apparatus includes a light source which directs a polarized source beam in a downstream direction along an optical axis and desirably focuses the beam. A polarization-altering element downstream from the source alters the polarization in a portion or portions of the source beam, so that the altered beam includes portions having different polarization directions. A vehicle for transport, fork lift or delivery route operations, for example, includes on-board peripherals which are coupled through a Local Area Network (LAN) into a data system. A LAN data bus provides selective access to the peripherals or data devlces such as, for example, a large area display, a keyboard, a prlnter and a data terminal. The data system controls or provides data on tasks executed by or in connection with the operation of the vehicle. To increase the versatility of the vehicle, the data terminal, multiple data terminals, or any of the other data devices may be removably coupled to the LAN to be operable externally of the vehicle. A mobile mount adapter provides a secure electrical connection of a respective data terminal to the LAN to removably incorporate the data terminal into the data system. The data terminal includes base contact areas which are contacted by spring contacts of the adapter. An "open face" of a disclosed adapter allows a cable for a scanner or other data link to extend from adjacent the base contact areas without a need to remove the extending cable, thereby enabling a cable-connected scanner to be moved and used while the data terminal is disposed in the adapter.

The invention is a method and apparatus for automatically reading bar code symbols. One aspect of the present invention concerns a method of reading bar code symbols using an automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device. In general, the automatic bar code symbol reading device comprises a hand-holdable housing containing operative elements which provide an object detection field and a scan field each defined external to the housing. The method involves automatically detecting the presence of an object within the object detection field by sensing object sensing energy reflected off the object. In a preferred embodiment, the object sensing energy is IR radiation produced from an object sensing energy source disposed within the housing. In automatic response to the detection of the object within the object detection field, the hand-holdable device detects the presence of a bar code within the scan field using a laser beam produced within the housing. Then, in automatic response to the detection of a bar code in the scan field, the automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device reads the detected bar code in the scan field by producing scan data signals from the detected bar code and thereafter collecting and analyzing the same. Another aspect of the present invention concerns a hand-holdable data collection device adapted for use with the automatic bar code symbol reading device to form a portable symbol reading system characterized by versatility and simplicity of use.

An optical system including a scan disc having concave reflectors thereon. As an optical printer, positioned adjacent to the scan disc are a corrector lens, a strip mirror, and a primary mirror. Positioned adjacent to the image plane are a field mirror and a pick-off mirror. Input light is directed onto the scan disc perpendicular to the plane of rotation. When one of the concave reflectors on the rotating scan disc is centered over one end of the strip mirror, the input light is brought to focus and is redirected to the primary mirror by the strip mirror. The primary mirror forms an image of the light spot after passing through the corrector lens. This image is intercepted by a field mirror which forms a final image of the spot. This image is picked out of the incident light beam by a thin pick-off mirror which redirects the light allowing image accessibility. With minor modification the optical system may also function as an optical scanner.

A bar code scanner employs an electronic means for causing the light beam to scan a bar code symbol, rather than using a mechanical device to generate the scan. A linear array of light sources, activated one at a time in a regular sequence, may be imaged upon the bar code symbol to simulate a scanned beam. Instead of a single linear array of light sources, a multiple-line array may be employed, producing multiple scan lines. The multiple scan lines may be activated in sequence, or activated simultaneously (time-division or frequency-division multiplexed. The multiple scan lines can provide signal enhancement, noise reduction or fault correction if directed to the same bar code pattern. Multiple scan lines may be generated using a single light source and a beam splitter, with mechanical scanning, as well as by the sequentially-activated light sources. Multiple simultaneous scan lines may be employed to generate a raster scan at lower mechanical scan frequency. In another embodiment, a tunable laser may be employed to provide a scan without moving parts; a laser beam from the tunable laser is reflected from a diffraction grating that produces an angular deviation dependent upon the wavelength of the laser output. As the frequency of the tunable laser is varied in some selected pattern, the laser beam will scan accordingly.

Method of and apparatus for controlling modulation of digital signals in frequency modulated transmissions

An analog switch (46) is adapted to receive a sequence of digital signals and to apply the positive and negative offset voltages (74, 69) to the signal input terminal in a sequence corresponding to the binary signal sequence of the received data signals.

Optical assembly for controlling beam size in bar code scanners

In order to control the width of the scanning beam in the scanning direction over a significant range in front of the scanner, an optical assembly including a phase mask is utilized through which the beam passes after being configured into curved wavefronts, as by a lens which provides a focus in the vicinity of the far end of the range. The F/ number of the optical assembly is high and the cone of the beam in the scanning direction is small, for example, less than 5°. The mask is preferably transparent and has a region which may be rectangular, elliptical or circular forming a step through which the center of the beam passes which imposes a phase change with respect to the phase of the wavefronts which do not propagate via the region. The phase change may be uniform or in the form of a weak quadratic phase variation in this region of the mask which changes phase and thus slightly refocuses the beam. The transmissivity of the region may also be varied and reduced with respect to the transmissivity of the mask outside of the region. The beam may be scanned via a scanning mirror or by scanning the optical assembly.

A scanner includes a single scan window, a laser source for producing a laser beam, a rotating optical spinner to reflect the laser beam to produce a scan beam and a collection of fixed mirrors to reflect the scan beam in order to give it a desired optical length and to direct it out of the scan window. In order to make efficient use of space within the scanner, the spinner comprises a multifaceted hollow reflector, and a collector mirror is placed within a volume bounded by the reflector. The space made available by placement of the collector within the volume bounded by the collector makes it possible to arrange the collection of fixed mirrors such that the scan beam experiences at least three reflections after leaving the spinner.

The control logic circuitry automatically activates the second-derivative zero-crossing detector in response to the detection of the presence of bar code element data encoded within said analog scan data signal, and automatically deactivates the second-derivative zero-crossing detector, in response to the detection of the absence of bar code element data encoded within the analog scan data signal. By virtue of the present invention, it is now possible to enable the detection of zero-crossings occurring in the second derivative of the analog scan data signals only when bar code element data has been detected, indicative that a bar code symbol has been scanned. This results in more accurate generation of digital output signals from the scan data signal processor.

We have discovered that it is possible to create a beam of light that is polarized in a linear fashion from the illuminator. This beam is directed to the bar coded labels (should not be limited to these only) at a relatively low angle of incidence. The beam is reflected toward the sensor (camera) optics. Before reaching the sensor, it passes through a second polarizing filter which blocks the transmission of the direct specular reflection from the label. The sensor only receives the information from the substrate by the diffuse reflection. The concept was developed specifically with the linerless label stock in mind. However, the present invention can be applied to linerless label sales to UPS and possibly other freight carriers, and/or to other types of labels and surfaces for optical scanning.

A packet-based, hierarchical communication system, arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. The network accommodates real time voice transmission both through dedicated, scheduled bandwidth and through a packet-based routing within the confines and constraints of a data network. Conversion and call processing circuitry is also disclosed which enables access devices and personal computers to adapt voice information between analog voice stream and digital voice packet formats as proves necessary. Routing pathways include wireless spanning tree networks, wide area networks, telephone switching networks, internet, etc., in a manner virtually transparent to the user. A voice session and associate call setup simulates that of conventional telephone switching network, providing well-understood functionality common to any mobile, remote or stationary terminal, phone, computer, etc.

The automatic code symbol reading system includes a battery power supply aboard its hand-mounted housing, and a power-conserving control subsystem for conserving the consumption of electrical power during automatic portable laser scanning operations. Each of the control centers is responsive to control activation signals generated by certain of the system components upon the occurrence of predefined conditions. Certain of the control centers are capable of overriding other control centers to provide diverse control capabilities. These control capabilities facilitate execution of intelligent functions and power consumption measures required during automatic, hands-free code symbol reading operations.

A hand-supportable bar code symbol reading device having a laser scanning engine that is controlled to selectively operate in either an omni-directional scan mode or a single line scan mode. ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to battery powered hand-held data entry terminals wherein a peripheral module may contain an automatically operating full image reader and a wireless communication unit. The reader reads at least one full line of indicia and may comprise a laser bar code scanner or a flash type image reader. Preferably the reader has uniform resolution in orthogonal directions in the field of view so that an area image can be read at any arbitrary angular orientation and re-oriented as a stored digital image to a normalized orientation before decoding. The user interface may lie in a first longitudinally extended layer and the peripheral module may lie in a second longitudinally extended adjoining layer. In normal reading disposition of the automatic reader, the user interface may be close to its normal orientation for user interaction therewith to provide for smooth transitions between reading and user interaction operations. A hand grip portion preferably underlies the user interface for comfortable support thereof during manual actuations. The peripheral module and hand grip portion may be used entirely separately from the user interface and may have a wireless link with the user interface. The user interface may comprise a digitizer/display with resolution for accurately digitizing and displaying a person's signature. Signatures may also be digitized via an optical full image reader for immediate verification.
