The remote postage metering device then verifies the demand for authority to demand and valid funding. Upon verification, the remote postage meter serves the transaction by configuring a shared device using virtual user device data structures and assembles a data packet representing an authorized postage indicia. The data packet is transmitted to the local system for printing. Printing of the postage indicia may be unaccompanied, or may include additional information. Such additional information may include destination and return address, machine readable routing or identification information, or a complete document to be posted.

In an alternative method the subset defines a combination of the postage parameters for which the generation of postage evidence is authorized, and the requested postage evidence is generated when each of the postage parameters in the first set matches one of the postage parameters in the second set.

A user at a user computer acquires secure postage labels having one or more security features such as serrated edges, a microprint strip, a color fiber, taggants, a watermark, a hologram, or a fluorescent stripe. The labels have associated serial numbers, possibly at the sheet or individual label level. The user establishes communication with a postage vendor system (PVS), which may include one or more servers, and requests one or more indicia. The user also provides one or more serial numbers for the label(s) or label sheet(s) on which the one or more indicia are to be printed. The PVS determines if the o ne or more serial numbers are valid, and if so, generates information for printing the one or more indicia and then sends the information to the user computer. The information preferably includes a digital signature for each indicium, which may incorporate the serial number. The user computer receive s the information and prints the one or more indicia on one or more postage labels.

System for recharging a plurality of postage meters

A system for obtaining recharge codes for one or more postage meters. The system includes a conventional microcomputer; including a keyboard and display, and disk drive, which is connected through a modem to a remote data processing center. The center provides codes which may be used to recharge postage meters, i.e., reset the meters so that they may continue printing postage. The system includes a data bank of information relating to each of the postage meters, including identification codes for each of the meters. A user enters information, including a control sum, for each meter and the system combines it with other information stored in the data bank to form messages. The system then enters into transactions with the remote data processing center to obtain recharge codes for each of the meters, which are then displayed for entry into the meters. In another embodiment the system may communicate directly with each meter through a local communications network.

A virtual postage metering system (10) and method provides value added services corresponding to postage metering transactions. Funds are not stored at the user's site reducing the risk of unauthorized modification of account balances. There is a database record (60) of every mail piece, which means that verification will be improved since all valid mail pieces are known. Furthermore, the present invention enables the postal service to know the volume of mail to be processed prior to receipt of the physical mail pieces. Since more mailer data is available (e.g. when users usually mail, how much mail per day, average postage amount) the virtual postage metering system (10) enables the postal service to predict mail handling patterns. Finally, users have the option to pay as they go (130) which contrasts present systems in which funds must be on deposit prior to being downloaded to a meter although such downloaded funds may remain in the meter for weeks before being used.
