A base station of a vehicle includes an angle of arrival (AoA) antenna assembly and a controller. The AoA antenna assembly is positioned at a known location of the vehicle. The AoA antenna assembly includes a pair of antennas on a printed circuit board to detect an angle of arrival of a wireless signal as received by the AoA antenna assembly from a portable remote control. The wireless signal may be a Bluetooth™, a Bluetooth™ low energy (BLE), a Wi-Fi™, or an ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless signal. The remote control may be in the form of a phone or a key fob. The controller uses the detected angle and the known location of the AoA antenna assembly to locate the portable remote control relative to the vehicle. The controller may perform a passive entry passive start (PEPS) operation of the vehicle as a function of the location of the remote control.

Described herein is a system and universal access control device that may be installed in proximity to, or within, an access control system to enable a user to use a user device to gain access to a secure area or resource. In some embodiments, a user may submit a request for access to a remote server and may be provided with an access token. The user may relay the received access token to the universal access device via a wireless transmission means on his or her user device. The universal access device may verify the authenticity of the access token by relaying the access token information to the remote server. Once the access token has been authenticated, the universal access control device may retrieve a credential stored in memory and provide that credential to the access control system to enable the user to gain entry to a secure area. 1. A method of operating a battery-powered lock device , the method comprising:at an electronic device having one or more processors and memory for storing instructions for execution by the one or more processors, wherein the electronic device is associated with a smart home environment that includes the battery-powered lock device:detecting a trigger event related to security of the smart home environment;determining, based on the trigger event, a target state of the lock device;determining a current state of the lock device;comparing the target state of the lock device with the current state of the lock device;sending a notification to a user device, the notification including an indication of the trigger event and a prompt for an override input; andproviding or foregoing provision of instructions to operate the lock device based on (i) the result of the comparison, and (ii) a received override input or lack thereof.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the instructions to operate the lock device comprise instructions to extend or retract a bolt of the lock device claim 1 , thereby conserving battery power when foregoing provision of the instructions to operate the lock device.3. A wireless access control system is provided to lock or unlock a first door at a dwelling of a user. A user remote access device accepts input based on haptic feedback or motion. The user remote access device includes a vibration mode provides an alert to the user of the remote access device. The user remote access device is configured to be in communication with an intelligent door lock system at the dwelling with the first door. The intelligent door lock system includes: a drive shaft, a circuit coupled to an engine configured to cause a rotation of the drive shaft, and an energy source coupled to the drive shaft. In response to the user remote access device accepting input based on haptic feedback or motion the bolt is caused to move and the first lock is locked or unlocked. The intelligent door lock system is configured to allow controlled access to the dwelling that includes an occupant of the dwelling as well as a designated third person granted access rights by the occupant. The user remote access device is in communication with a second lock at a vehicle of the user or at an office of the user. In response to the user remote access device accepting input based on haptic feedback or motion the second lock is locked or unlocked. The remote access device has a controller for using haptic motion to lock or unlock locks.

The first universal key is trained to a particular motor vehicle using a first secret. The server stores a further secret for unlocking, locking, and/or starting the motor vehicle. The server is configured to transmit the further secret to a universal key using two interfaces and the mobile radio terminal.
