A vehicle processing device authenticates that an authorized user has requested an action by the vehicle, and generates an authentication acknowledgement message. At least two security devices being present within the cabin of, or close to, the vehicle during a predetermined period following an authentication trigger event that occurs while the user performs a predetermined sequence of authentication activities (i.e., button presses, operating the vehicle or a part of it, etc.) provides a basis for the authentication acknowledgement message. The invention includes apparatus that encourages the equipment operator to perform specified monitoring checks on specified systems at specified intervals, and requires that the check is done by the operator physically removing a check device such as a crankcase or transmission dipstick, radiator cap, air filter, and so on. Failure to perform the required monitoring task results in the equipment being disabled or locked out so that the operator is unable to use the equipment; for example, a starter motor may be locked out so that the engine cannot start until a specified monitoring check has been completed. 1. A method of maintaining equipment comprising the steps of:a) locating at a first location on said equipment a FOB reader, said FOB reader adapted to interface with an operational component of said equipment such that said operational component may be controlled by said FOB reader;b) attaching to a single system component of said equipment a FOB that includes identifying data that uniquely identifies the single system component, said system component and said FOB located during normal operation of said equipment at a second location that is physically separated from said first location by a distance that is sufficient that the FOB reader is unable to read said identifying data when the FOB is in the second location;c) moving the FOB and the attached system component into proximity to the FOB reader to cause the FOB reader to read said identifying data; andd) with said FOB reader, controlling said operational component.2. A Remote Consensus Control System (RCCS) allows authorized users to operate a device at a distance with consensus logic. One or more users can remotely apply a locking command. The device will remain locked until the very last user consents to unlocking. Any application requiring unanimous consent could use a RCCS to drive a mechanical lock, status indication, or a digital control or indication signal.
