For the labelling of products with simple paper labels to be coated with a glue, these are prepunched in a paper strip, with the exception of joining bridges which are left intact. The joining bridges are severed shortly before the label is delivered to the product. The label is then detached from the paper strip and pushed onto the product in the original conveying direction of the paper strip, whilst the remaining paper strip is discharged by being deflected at an acute angle into another direction. The necessary glue coating is applied to the label or to the product shortly before the label passes onto the product.

The web roll is comprised of a carrier web on which a series of labels are releasably held by a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive. The composite web rolls are made by slitting a wide composite web roll. The slitting is done without regard to the pattern of the adhesive coating. There is further disclosed a method by which the same or substantially identical hand-held labelers can be used to dispense labels of different widths, wherein the composite label webs exhibit the same drag. In this way the forces required to manually actuate the labeler or labelers are kept to a minimum and are substantially equal.

The first body, which is the upper layer has an outer surface that is a printing surface. The second body, which is the lower layer is made from a comfortable fibrous sheet material. The adhesive is disposed between the two bodies, thereby coupling the bodies together. A portion at one end of the second body, a tab portion, has a release coating on the inner surface. In this configuration, the tab can be removed and the adhesive underneath can be attached to the other end of the wristband. As the tab is part of the second body, as opposed to a separate release liner, the wristband may be disposed on a roll and passed through a label printer.

The linerless label may have two parallel crease or fold lines 34 to provide lines about which the linerless label can be folded. A reel of labels may be formed with the adhesive material of one label coinciding with the non-stick material of another label so that they do not stick together. A method for manufacturing such a linerless label is also disclosed.

The first body, which is the upper layer has an outer surface that is a printing surface. The second body, which is the lower layer is made from a comfortable fibrous sheet material. The adhesive is disposed between the two bodies, thereby coupling the bodies together. A portion at one end of the second body, a tab portion, has a release coating on the inner surface. In this configuration, the tab can be removed and the adhesive underneath can be attached to the other end of the wristband. As the tab is part of the second body, as opposed to a separate release liner, the wristband may be disposed on a roll and passed through a label printer.

Linerless labels are presented. A label includes a specific pattern or set of patterns of adhesive applied to one side of the label. The adhesive pattern(s) reduces contact between a cutter blade of a printer and the adhesive on the one side of the label. Moreover, the adhesive patterns reduce buildup of adhesive on the cutter blade and reduce buildup at specific locations on the cutter blade. That is, the adhesive patterns more evenly distribute adhesive buildup across the cutter blade. Consequently, the cutter blade can be used for a longer period of time before the cutter blade needs to be cleaned of the adhesive.

An adhesive-free laminate and a process for producing such a laminate are described herein. The process includes printing an ink on the surface of a first film, exposure of the printed film to UV radiation such that the ink is at least partially cured, attaching the first film to a second film such that the ink is between the first and second film, and exposing the combination of the first film, the ink and the second film to a second UV radiation. It has been found that this process can produce a unique laminate, without the presence of an adhesive.

The adhesive pattern(s) reduces contact between a cutter blade of a printer and the adhesive on the one side of the label. Moreover, the adhesive patterns reduce buildup of adhesive on the cutter blade and reduce buildup at specific locations on the cutter blade. Self-adhesive lengths of labels (2) on a roll (5) have the disadvantage that they cannot be provided with a tangible warning (3) on the labels (1) since the roll (5) would "overturn" due to the elevations (3) which would all be at the same level in the roll (5). According to the invention the length of labels (6) is provided with some further elevations (4) on both sides of the labels (1), whereby the web can be wound up in the usual manner, because the distance between the layers in the roll (5) will remain uniform in the entire height of the roll, whereby the required stability is obtained and thus the possibility of using label rolls (5) with tangible warnings (3) in the usual labelling machines. The subsequent affixing of the warning onto labels, either while the labels are being affixed or subsequently, is hereby avoided.

A novel method of making a laminated label construction is provided which involves (1) providing a temporary carrier (2) having a first relatively strong release surface (4) and a second relatively weak release surface (6) on opposite sides thereof, (2) forming a heat sealable lacquer (8) on said first release surface so as to form a label face film having a predetermined edge configuration, (3) forming indicia (10) on at least one selected portion of said label face film (in the case where printed labels are desired), and (4) forming a layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive (12) in overlying bonded relationship with the indicia (10) (when present) and the protective lacquer (8). The pressure-sensitive adhesive (12) has lateral dimensions less than those of the label face film. The lacquer face film (8) comprises at least one heat-activatable ingredient that becomes tacky when heated and thereby provides heat-sealing properties. The carrier (2) may be an elongate web that is wound on itself to form a roll-type package, with the pressure-sensitive adhesive (12) facing outwardly and engaged by the weak release surface (6) of the carrier. The differential release prevents any blocking or offsetting of the label as roll is wound and unwound. Each label is easily peeled off of the web and transferred to a workpiece or other receiving object such as a plastic bottle by application of heat and pressure, whereby the edge of the lacquer film (8) forms a heat seal with the surface of the receiving object.
