Abstract of the Disclosure An improved servo control system for data track following of the read/write head in a magnetic recording system uses a pattern of segments of servo information slanted across the data tracks. The time of flight of the servo segment from occurrence of a reference pulse until the peak servo signal is read by the head is an indication of the position of the head in a direction perpendicular to the desired track. This time is compared with the known time of flight if the head were precisely over the centerline of the desired track and the time difference is used to generate a control signal to position the head over the track centerline. In an embodiment where each segment is slanted across only one track, the reference pulse is the beginning of the servo signal and the time measurement is the number of fixed frequency magnetic transitions read by the head in the servo segment. When the system is used in flexible disk drives, the servo segments are written in one of the data sectors on the flexible disk by the user's disk drive.

The present invention proposes a new servo track writing technique called Extended Copying with Head Offset ("ECHO"). The read and write elements of the read/write head are offset from each other. A servo writer writes a guide pattern on the magnetic media disc. ZAP correction factors are added to the guide pattern. The head disc assembly is then connected to an electrical control system for self-propagating servo writing. The actuator arm is displaced until the read head is aligned over the guide pattern. In one embodiment, the system is implemented by configuring a group of servo tracks in a radial direction for a hard drive media. The group is comprised of an integral number of servo tracks that is constant throughout the drive device. The number of data tracks in a group is also an integer but will vary for each surface according to the head used for R/W operations for each media surface. Group boundaries coincide with media surface R/W zone boundaries. The groups are accessed in hard drives having multiple surfaces in a serpentine manner. Data tracks per group are reduced from what is achievable to produce desired target capacities.

Using a phase continuous clock, data is written in both portions of a data field to either side of each micro servo section in one pass of the disk or tape relative to the head. The micro servo sections contain no timing reference address mark and require no data encoder/decoder flush or synchronization byte to resume reading in the portion of the data field following each micro servo section.

Apparatus and method for aligning a rotatable substrate to a support mechanism to write a feature to the substrate, and a substrate so configured. In some embodiments, the substrate has a circumferentially extending timing pattern with spaced apart first and second timing marks disposed on opposing sides of a center point of the timing pattern and an identification (ID) field that stores a unique identifier value associated with the substrate. Upon mounting of the substrate to a support mechanism that rotates the substrate about a central axis that is offset from the center point, a control circuit generates a compensation value to compensate for the offset using the first and second timing marks and outputs a process instruction to authorize processing of the substrate using the unique identifier value. In some cases, the unique identifier value is used as a lookup to a computerized database.

A space in which air is introduced is formed in the hub, and a plurality of disks and a plurality of spacers are assembled on the outer circumference thereof. The hub is provided so that a plurality of pressing members can be sunk. The plurality of pressing members protrude out of the outer circumferential surface of the hub by the pressure of air introduced into the hub, and are in close contact with the inner circumferential surfaces of the plurality of disks and the plurality of spacers. At the end of the hub is coupled a clamp that secures the plurality of disks and the plurality of spacers. According to such a structure, the eccentricity of many disks assembled in the hub outer periphery is prevented by the some press member provided in the hub of the disk holder.

The spiral servo signals are used to generate position error signals and write a plurality of servo patterns. A write current of the head is varied for at least one servo pattern. A PES/WC relationship between the position error signals and the write current is determined and a plurality of final servo patterns are written by utilizing the PES/WC relationship and varying the write current. Varying the write current changes the trailing edge of the servo bits and controls the position of the track center. The PES/WC relationship allows the system to compensate for excursions within a single revolution of the disk.

It is not necessary to provide a dedicated clock read/write head.

A second set of alternating tracks interleaved with the first set also has a leading PRBS and a following PRBS that is cyclically shifted from the leading PRBS, but the leading PRBS in each of the tracks in the second set is offset along-the-track from the leading PRBS in the tracks of the first set. The head positioning control system uses the leading PRBS to generate a servo timing mark (STM), the cyclic shift to generate track identification (TID), and the following PRBS from adjacent tracks to generate the head position error signal (PES).

In the case of tape-form media, tape transport and transducer-positioning is carried out in a serpentine pattern.

On spin up of the disk, the processor detects a spin-up wedge associated with one of the servo wedges and then detects the servo wedge. Once the servo wedge is detected, a head-position circuit can read the location data from the servo wedge to determine an initial position of the read-write head. By detecting a both a spin-up wedge and a servo wedge to determine an initial head position on disk spin up, such a servo circuit often allows one to increase the disk's storage capacity by reducing the lengths of the spin-up wedges.

A servo writing transducer is shown having transverse side surfaces (33, 34) of the pole pieces (7) adjoining the gap formed to optimize compression of the fringe field at one transverse side (33) to reduce the dead band intermediate servo tracks. The existence of a wider fringe field region at the opposite transverse side (34) is without consequence since the servo writing procedure is to first write the farthest track at the transducer side at which the compressed field occurs followed by each succeeding, adjoining servo track causing the information written in the wide fringe field to be overwritten by the next track.

Method and apparatus for formatting a data storage medium, such as a magnetic or optical disc. In accordance with various embodiments, a data storage medium is rotated while a write beam is used to write data to the rotating medium. The data are written in the form of a plurality of concentric data tracks. A deflection angle of the write beam is continuously adjusted in an axial direction along each track. In some embodiments, the axial deflection of the write beam imparts a desired angular offset between a beginning point of a first track and a beginning point of an immediately adjacent second track. This allows a first translation geometry, such as a linear translation path of a linear actuator, to emulate a different second translation geometry, such as a rotary translation path of a rotary actuator.
