An electrical switch and a circuit breaker are presented herein. The electrical switch includes a graded resistance block comprising a first end having a first electrical resistivity and a second end having an electrical resistivity greater than the first electrical resistivity. The electrical switch further includes a fixed contact electrically coupled to the first end of the graded resistance block, and a sliding contact configured to slide over the graded resistance block. In addition to the components of the electrical switch, the circuit breaker also includes a forcing mechanism to slide the sliding contact over the graded resistance block from the first end to the second end.

This invention discloses a type of noncontact linear potentiometer; the potentiometer comprises a slider, a rotating shaft, a guide rod, a tunneling magnetoresistive sensor, a permanent magnet, a printed circuit board, and two support structures. In this configuration the slider moves along the guide rod and the rotating shaft, causing the rotation of the rotating shaft; the permanent magnet is attached to an end of the rotating shaft, and it therefore rotates as the shaft rotates. A tunneling magnetoresistive sensor is located adjacent to the permanent magnet, soldered onto a printed circuit board, and it is used to measure the angle of rotation of the permanent magnet. The guide rod constrains the sliding direction of the slider, and the two support structures are located at the opposite ends of the guide rod and rotating shaft, and they are used to support the rotating shaft and guide rod. Located between the slider and rotating shaft is a ball bearing, a pin and a leaf spring assembly. This potentiometer has several advantages, including a compact structure, easy fabrication, long service life, in addition to providing smooth slider motion that provides a pleasing user experience.

The resistor includes a rotor 3 and a slider 4 inside a case 1. The variable resistor also includes a resistor substrate 2 having a collector electrode 25 at a central portion of a surface thereof and having a resistive element 24 in a circular arc shape on an outer side of the collector electrode 25 substantially concentric with the central portion. The resistor substrate 2 is mounted to a lower end portion of the case 1. The slider 4 is provided with a first arm 42 having a substantially U-like shape at one end side of a base portion 41 attached to the rotor 3, having a first contact point portion 42a at a front end of the first arm which is brought into sliding contact with the resistive element 24 in the circular arc shape. The slider 4 is also provided with a second arm 43 and a second contact point portion 43a at a front end of the second arm which is brought into contact with the collector electrode. The arms are bent in directions opposed to each other, wherein the slider 4 is formed such that the first contact point portion 42a is disposed on the inner side of base portion 41 from a folded-bent portion 43b of the second arm 43, and the second contact point portion 43a is disposed on the inner side of the base portion 41 from a folded-bent portion 42b of the first arm 42. A reduction in gearing between the operating: shaft 8 and the rotor 19 is obtained by the use of intermediate balls 23. Overlying the rear face of the base 6 is a resistance element 12 and a metal collector ring 14, held in place by terminals 13 and 15 respectively. Resilient contact fingers 16 and 17 form part of the contactor 18, mounted on the rotor or contact carrier 19, which is rotatable about the axis of the shaft. Rotation of the shaft is transmitted to the carrier 19 by a driving element 21 provided with an inner rotatable track 21a and a stationary outer track 22 which causes balls 23 to rotate between the tracks. The track 22 is formed by the inside surface of a frusto-conical rearwardly projecting extrusion of the rear wall which is secured to the base 6 so providing a housing for the resistor mechanism and a support against rearward movement of the carrier. The carrier 19 coacts with the tracks to hold the balls in place and also provides the means for applying the rearward axial thrust of a spring 26 on the balls. The carrier has a circular wall 27, Fig. 4, projecting from its rear surface 25, shaped on its inside to provide three pockets 28, separated from one another by lugs 29 in order to provide a smooth driving connection between the balls and the carrier. When the shaft rotates the balls go into orbital motion about it at a much slower rate than the shaft rotation and this motion is transmitted directly to the carrier to effect the fine adjustment of the resistor. The adjustment is confined to less than 360 degrees by means of stop abutments 30 on the contactor carrier 19, with a stationary stop 31 on the cover, Fig. 3.
