A bushing 12 secures the casing to the panel 16 and supports a spindle 19 carrying the contact-device. This consists of a band 25 of elastic metal secured at 27 to an arm 21 attached to the spindle 19 and bent at 26 as shown to form a contact shoe of considerable area. The arm 21 is bent as shown at 23 to form a support for the shoe 26 in its angular motion without interfering with its yielding to irregularities in the resistance 5. A spring 31 bears on the end of the spindle 19 to hold it in place and make electric connection with it.

A reduction in gearing between the operating: shaft 8 and the rotor 19 is obtained by the use of intermediate balls 23. Overlying the rear face of the base 6 is a resistance element 12 and a metal collector ring 14, held in place by terminals 13 and 15 respectively. Resilient contact fingers 16 and 17 form part of the contactor 18, mounted on the rotor or contact carrier 19, which is rotatable about the axis of the shaft. Rotation of the shaft is transmitted to the carrier 19 by a driving element 21 provided with an inner rotatable track 21a and a stationary outer track 22 which causes balls 23 to rotate between the tracks. The track 22 is formed by the inside surface of a frusto-conical rearwardly projecting extrusion of the rear wall which is secured to the base 6 so providing a housing for the resistor mechanism and a support against rearward movement of the carrier. The carrier 19 coacts with the tracks to hold the balls in place and also provides the means for applying the rearward axial thrust of a spring 26 on the balls. The carrier has a circular wall 27, Fig. 4, projecting from its rear surface 25, shaped on its inside to provide three pockets 28, separated from one another by lugs 29 in order to provide a smooth driving connection between the balls and the carrier. When the shaft rotates the balls go into orbital motion about it at a much slower rate than the shaft rotation and this motion is transmitted directly to the carrier to effect the fine adjustment of the resistor. The adjustment is confined to less than 360 degrees by means of stop abutments 30 on the contactor carrier 19, with a stationary stop 31 on the cover, Fig. 3. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the shaft can be secured against forward usual displacement by providing its end portion with a spoolshaped configuration. U.S.A. A resistor pattern is formed by printing on the resistor base in a positional relationship determined by positioning reference portions formed on the resistor base. Positioning reference portions are also formed on the holder, and positioning portions are formed in the case. A resilient-contact member for bringing the positioning reference portions of each of the resistor base and the holder into contact with the positioning portions of the case is also provided on the case. A lower bearing made of stainless steel and formed by pressing so as to have a cylindrical portion and a flange formed at one end of the cylindrical portion is integrally combined with the holder by insert molding, while an upper bearing is press-fitted to the holder, thereby forming a bearing unit for receiving the shaft portion of the sliding-element supporting member.

A variable resistor reduces an inclination of a rotor caused by spring reaction of a slider, and prevents the lowering of contact pressure and deterioration in sliding performance of the slider. The resistor includes a rotor 3 and a slider 4 inside a case 1. The variable resistor also includes a resistor substrate 2 having a collector electrode 25 at a central portion of a surface thereof and having a resistive element 24 in a circular arc shape on an outer side of the collector electrode 25 substantially concentric with the central portion. The resistor substrate 2 is mounted to a lower end portion of the case 1. The slider 4 is provided with a first arm 42 having a substantially U-like shape at one end side of a base portion 41 attached to the rotor 3, having a first contact point portion 42a at a front end of the first arm which is brought into sliding contact with the resistive element 24 in the circular arc shape. The slider 4 is also provided with a second arm 43 and a second contact point portion 43a at a front end of the second arm which is brought into contact with the collector electrode. The arms are bent in directions opposed to each other, wherein the slider 4 is formed such that the first contact point portion 42a is disposed on the inner side of base portion 41 from a folded-bent portion 43b of the second arm 43, and the second contact point portion 43a is disposed on the inner side of the base portion 41 from a folded-bent portion 42b of the first arm 42. The second contact point portion 43a is folded back to the side of the resistor substrate 2.

Two sensors (30, 30A) are arranged on the end of an armature (22) to come into contact with the resistive element, to detect voltage levels at the points of contact with the resistive element. These voltage levels determine the spherical coordinates of the contact points and the angle of rotation of the armature with respect to the resistive element. A sliding lever (40) is arranged on a rod (28) of the frame. The sliding handle senses a voltage level at the point of contact between a handle sensor (42) and a resistive element (44) to determine a position of the handle relative to the rod, corresponding to the site of the handle.

A variable resistor comprises a base on which the resistive material is supported, a non-rotary shaft is mounted in the base and serves both as a terminal and mounting for the resistor assembly, a brush carrier engages with the shaft and an open-ended cover is held in contact with the base by means of the brush carrier, the cover and carrier rotating as a single unit. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 show a variable resistor comprising a resistive track 6, composed of compressed powdered resistive material and a thermo-setting binder which is mounted in a recess 5 of a moulded insulated base 1 on which are mounted terminals 7 connected to the ends of track 6. Base 1 supports a shaft 8 which passes through aperture 2 so that faces 9 abut against recess 3 and a groove 10 engages with the vertical slot 14 in a spring metal brush carrier 11 which is bowed so that the carbon brush 17 which it carries presses against track 6. The carrier 11 engages by means of slot 14, a key 20 in an open-ended cover or knob 18, the top of the carrier being sprung into the shallow recess 22 in cover 18 whilst the bottom of the limbs 13 passes through the slot 21. Variation of the resistance is effected by rotation of cover 18 and carrier 11 which rotate as one unit on shaft 8.

Such a lever 80 is provided at each end of the die. The die is used for producing variable resistors (see Division H1).

A device intended for controlling the speed of a windscreen wiper motor by varying the resistance of the field winding circuit comprises a housing 1 having apertured webs 5, 6 in which an hexagonal shaft 2 may both slide and rotate. A contact member 3 rotatable with the shaft comprises, Fig. 6, a metal plate 14 coated on one face with insulating material 15, a number of resistors 16 (only one shown) being printed on the material, these resistors being terminated at one end by contact-engaging portions 31. An annular contact-engaging portion 30 is also printed on the material 15. An insulating sleeve 10 rotatable with the shaft 2 has a pair of grooves 35, 36 engageable by a spring-biased ball 37 for locating the shaft in two positions, the shaft rotation being positively limited by a stop on the sleeve 10 (Fig. 1, not shown) co-operating with a stop on the housing 1. Resilient contact arms 28, 29 respectively engage the annular contact 30 and the succession of contacts 31, the arms being connected to terminals 26, 27 mounted on an insulating plate 19. A further contact arm 22 electrically connected to the arm 28 has a free end 32 engaging the edge of the plate 14 except when a recess 34 in the plate is opposite thereto. In operation, in clockwise rotation of the shaft 2 from the " off " position in which the arm end 32 is opposite the recess 34 the arm 29 engages successive contacts 31 to progressively increase the resistance of the motor field circuit and thereby increase the motor speed. Sliding motion of the shaft 2 causes actuation of the pump plunger of a windscreen washer (not shown) secured to a boss 9 of the housing 1.

1329168 Potentiometers; rotary switches ERIE TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCTS Inc 19 April 1972 [6 July 1971] 31717/71 Headings H1N and HIS A rotary electric control comprises a heat resistant, e.g. ceramic, substrate 1 having a metallic spindle 3 adhered to and upstanding from a plane surface of the substrate and on which is rotatably mounted a wiper contact 6. Resistor track 2 and conductive pads 10, 11 comprise a mixture of precious or noble metals, e.g. palladium/silver or platinum/gold alloys, and glass vapour deposited on to the substrate. The spindle 3 and terminal leads 12 are bonded to the substrate by melting solder terminations formed on the conductive pads by dip soldering. Wiper contact 6, provided with an indentation 4 or a carbon brush, is rotated by a moulded plastics knob 14 having a raised portion on its rear surface which mates with the arcuate aperture 16 in the wiper, complete rotation being prevented by a stop 13. Anon-conductive spindle may be used in which case a conductive track is formed concentrically with the resistor track. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) discrete resistors are formed on the substrate and are sequentially switched into circuit.

An electrical control unit operable as a rheostat or a potentiometer comprising an electrical circuit portion of a resistive electrically conducting material formed on a support in a spiral configuration, a spindle mounted for rotation about the center of the spiral, an arm non-rotatably engaged on the spindle but slidable relatively to the spindle radially with respect to the axis thereof, an electrical contact carried on the arm to move radially therewith, to make contact with said circuit portion, and a spiral guide means aligned with the circuit portion spiral and co-operable with the arm to guide said arm radially, so that the electrical contact follows the circuit portion spiral to alter the effective electrical resistance thereof in use.

A throttle sensor for an engine comprises a first variable resistor interlocked with an opening and closing operation of a throttle valve of the engine and adapted to output an electrical signal corresponding to an opening degree of the throttle valve, and a composite circuit variable resistor electrically connected to the first variable resistor and adapted to correct a correlative value between the opening degree of the throttle valve and the electrical signal to be outputted from the first variable resistor corresponding to the opening degree. Thus, the correlative value of the electrical signal to be outputted from the variable resistor to the opening degree of the throttle valve may be easily and accurately adjusted to a target value.
