Described herein are techniques related to a haptic keyboard that features a satisfying tactile keypress experience. Using active tactile feedback (i.e., haptics) via its keys, one or more of the described example keyboards simulates the feel of a snap-over keypress of conventional keys, such as that of a rubber-dome keyboard. Systems and methods are provided for electroforming a dome for use in a dome switch. A mandrel having several dome shapes incorporated in a planar surface is provided. The mandrel can serve as a cathode in an electroforming process to construct a sheet of domes, for example by enabling the deposition of a sheet of nickel on the mandrel. The domes can be singulated from the sheet for use as part of dome switches. The electroforming process may ensure that the domes have a uniform thickness and no internal stresses that may affect the performance of the domes.

When the legacy application is executed, a supplemental software program, such as a plugin, is also executed and is utilized in order to identify currently relevant interactive features of the legacy application during execution. Functionality is dynamically assigned to the various user-manipulated controls based on the identified features. In one embodiment, detection of objects (particularly the user's hands) proximate to the input controls is also employed in determining the assignment of functionality and/or in displaying a visual representation to the user of the available interactive choices. In another embodiment, the user-manipulated input controls are dynamically and physically reconfigured under control of the processor based on the identified features.

A process is provided for characterizing a tactile response of a first mechanical actuator (e.g., button) based on a back off distance. The first mechanical actuator may include a plunger, a dome-shaped flexible membrane, and an electrical contact, all aligned with each other so that a contact signal is generated when the flexible membrane touches the contact. The plunger can be moved a first distance towards the contact until the contact signal is generated at a contact point. Then the plunger can be backed off a second distance from the contact point. This second distance may be called the “back off distance”. The particular feel of the first mechanical actuator can then be correlated to a particular back off distance. This process can be repeated a number of times to classify a number of different “feels” for the first mechanical actuator based on a number of different back off distances.

[Solution] A two-stage switch ( 10 ) is provided with a click dome plate ( 20 ) having a movable contact, a keypad ( 30 ) joined to the upper surface of the dome of the dome plate ( 20 ), and a fixed contact ( 41 ) formed on a substrate ( 40 ). The fixed contact ( 41 ) comprises a first stage fixed contact ( 42 ) and second stage fixed contact ( 43 ). When the keypad ( 30 ) is not being subjected to a pressing operation, the dome plate ( 20 ) is in a floating state without contacting any of the fixed contacts. With a first stage pressing operation on the keypad ( 30 ), the pad ( 30 ) is deformed and the dome plate ( 20 ) comes into contact with the first stage fixed contact ( 42 ). With a second stage pressing operation on the keypad ( 30 ), the dome plate ( 20 ) deforms with a clicking sensation and comes into contact with the second stage fixed contact ( 43 ).

The present invention address the problem of providing a push-button switch which is capable of clearly displaying an image output from a display and which allows a person performing a depressing operation to have a distinct operational feel. Among the elements constituting the push-button switch, a button is a transparent or substantially transparent button which is disposed over a display and which receives a depressing operation. Lenses are disposed between the button and the display, and cause an image output from the display to be projected with a focal point at a diffusing plate in a top surface of the button in a standby position before a depressing operation is performed. A holding member incorporates the lenses in such a way that the position and orientation of each of the lenses are fixed with respect to the display. Thus, the problem is solved.

Electromechanical polymer (EMP) actuators are used to create haptic effects on a user interface deface, such as a keyboard. The keys of the keyboard may be embossed in a top layer to provide better key definition and to house the EMP actuator. Specifically, an EMP actuator is housed inside an embossed graphic layer that covers a key of the keyboard. Such a keyboard has a significant user interface value. For example, the embossed key provides the tactile effect of the presence of a key with edges, while allowing for the localized control of haptic vibrations. For such applications, an EMP transducer provides high strains, vibrations or both under control of an electric field. Furthermore, the EMP transducer can generate strong vibrations. When the frequency of the vibrations falls within the acoustic range, the EMP transducer can generate audible sound, thereby functioning as an audio speaker.
