A fluorescent lamp comprising:a transparent envelope;at least one base enclosing an interior chamber within the envelope, the base having an interior surface within the interior chamber and a sealing portion sealed to the envelope with a cement;a gas mixture within the interior chamber, the gas mixture comprising mercury vapor; anda quantity of material on the interior surface of the base, the quantity of material being spaced apart from the sealing portion and the cement thereof, the quantity of material comprising a chemical agent that substantially reduces or prevents formation of leachable mercury.2. The fluorescent lamp according to claim 1 , wherein the envelope is a tube.3. The fluorescent lamp according to claim 1 , wherein the chemical agent electrochemically reduces at least one form of leachable mercury to metallic mercury.4. This invention improves the stability and control of high-pressure glow discharges by means of a microhllow cathode discharge. The microhollow cathode discharge, which is sustained between two closely spaced electrodes with an opening formed in the electrodes, serves as a plasma cathode for the high-pressure glow. Small variations in the microhollow cathode discharge voltage generate large variations in the microhollow cathode discharge current and consequently in the glow discharge current. In this mode of operation the electrical characteristic of this invention resembles that of a vacuum triode. Using the microhollow cathode discharge as a plasma cathode, stable, dc discharges in argon up to atmospheric pressures can be generated. Additionally, parallel operation of these discharges allows for the generation of large volume plasmas at high gas pressure through superposition of individual glow discharges. Thus, this invention allows simultaneous generation of relatively high electron densities at relatively low temperatures with stable, direct current, homogenous glow discharge plasma at relatively high pressure.

Light is produced when the voltage difference between the first electrode 106 and the second electrode 104 creates an electric field sufficiently large to electrically break down the gas (nominally about 10 4 V-cm). This light escapes from the microcavity 102 through at least one end of the cavity 102.

In the gas discharge tube according to the present invention, there is carried out narrowing of the discharge path with cooperation of the first opening 20 and the second opening 12 in order to obtain higher luminance of light. Further, in order to maintain excellent starting-properties of a lamp even if the discharge path is narrowed, a predetermined voltage is applied to a second discharge path limit portion 11 externally. Thereby, a positive or active starting discharge is produced in such a manner as to pass through the first opening 20 . Further, the second opening 12 is comprised of not only a straight section 13 extending in a direction of an optical axis Y, but also a spread section 14 extending from an end portion of the straight section 13 toward the first opening 20 . The spread section 14 has a function of improving the starting properties of the lamp and forms an arc ball, and the straight section has a function of improving a plasma density. Thereby, discharge at a starting time is made easy to pass through the second discharge path limit portion 11 . As a result, a rapid start of discharge between a cathode 23 and an anode portion 8 is achieved in the second discharge path limit portion 11 , and that contributes to proper generation of an arc ball after lighting.

In addition, according to the present invention, the end of the inner conductor is installed inside the discharge tube so as to be spaced apart from the inner surface of the discharge tube, thereby making it unnecessary to install a termination.

In this manner the molecular architecture of a cell is excited to promote the cell growth process.
